can i make money from this?

I have tons of photos in the "funny/awesome" niche. I got them all from emails that were forwarded to me. A couple of years' worth. If I start a blog and post a lot of pictures in a relatively short amount of time, will I start seeing organic traffic right away? Is it possible to get a lot of traffic from pictures? And how would I be able to make money from this traffic?

My answer ranges from yes to no. Seriously though you can give it a try, I mean look at PeopleofWalmart.com, that thing took off pretty good. Mix in the power of facebook and Pinterest, then you might have something there.

Yes, you can start the blog and get traffic from Pinterest. Just post your blog's pictures on Pinterest and put your blog's link at the description.

Yeah you can make the pictures go viral via social media traffic and have them lead back to your site, but there is a lot of competition.

You can monetize it with adsense and IQ test CPA offers and stomach fat loss ads, because people that look at those sites are into that stuff.

do you have the right to use the images for commercial purposes? Thats the first thing you need to figure out. Do you have licenses with those photos? what about model releases if there any people in the pictures?

Just having pictures on your cpu that you got off the internet certainly does not mean you can use for commercial purposes.

Good point from David... You should do a little research on copyrights before you start building a site you intend on monetizing in the future.

I don't really think you would run into any severe legal problems if you were to move forward with this but it would be a good idea to protect yourself in some way... There are lots of people out there who look for copyright violations.

I wonder if meme photos and other Internet "funnies" actually have copyrights in the first place. It's worth a look at least.

all photos are copyrighted from the moment they are created. since 1982 i think it was the law changed so that you don't have to register a copyright. when any original work is created, it gets a copyright by default. except in some pretty rare cases.

what you really need to find out is if you have a license to use that content for commercial purposes. I can guarantee that the images are copyrighted, they come that way by default...lol

Or you could go the route of YouTube/Pinterest and have users upload content "that they made". Certainly a gray area but technically legal as long as you're not doing the uploading.

very dark grey... i haven't followed pintrest much, but youtube has had several lawsuits of copyright stuff.

the difference between youtube and the OP is that youtube is backed by some very deep pockets...in most cases much deeper than their accusers.

if you have copyrighted material on your site, its not a matter of if but when you will get a letter from a lawyer.

he needs to figure out the licenses he has to those images.

I agree, I certainly wouldn't start a site like that but it is a possibility. The trick is to get big enough to make money without getting too big to get sued. Not a risk I would be willing to take!

I'm sure as long as you put the proper disclaimers in place, you shouldn't get too much trouble.
Don't bet on it! At best you'll get a DMCA take down notice or lose your domain, worst case you'll get sued for all you have for willful infringement.

I know for a fact that you can, but it would be quite a bit of work. I think primarily the pictures would be a draw of some sort, solely there to get you traffic. People are always interested in seeing very funny images. I'm sure as long as you put the proper disclaimers in place, you shouldn't get too much trouble.

It's a highly competitive market, but if you're willing to take it on- power be to you my friend.

adding disclaimers doesn't allow you to steal things including intellectual property.

If you are making money from other people's photographs (which is what you are thinking of doing) they can legitimately invoice you for their usage.

I have invoiced websites before for unauthorised use of my.photographs and the fact that they paid me rather than fought or ignored it suggests that they knew I was in the right.

I believe you will not have a problem if you go with blogspot, the worst scenario is the banning. If I were you, I would give it a try, I would monetize the blog through a PPC program and if it goes well, I would try to sell e-books with funny images or jokes.
    Good Luck.

Just like many of us, my sites got hit this past couple of weeks. Not all of them, but sitting on 30+ sites that got hurt badly, I mean pushed way back.

I was afraid to build additional links, guessing that is the state of mind these days. I was afraid to build a single link to these sites.

    My plan:

Funny Pictures, Quotes, Pics, Photos, Images. Videos of Really Very Cute animals.

I visit this site every once in a while and they don't produce any of the content that they host...at all.
Unless I'm mistaken, this is the same business model that Stean is trying to get into. Tell me how they've been able to do so?

I'm honestly asking by the way lol

Wow. Unfortunately this sounds like a lawsuit just waiting to happen

It has been my experience that people who "forward" funny stuff in emails don't pay one millionth of a second thinking about copyright and such, they just click "forward" on impulse as they are basking in their awe or laughter and want to pass it on.

To do something like this you would need to backtrack through every single email, contact the sender, and find out what the rights to the image are. This doesn't sound like a "business." It sounds like "busyness."

Good luck. Keep coming up with ideas, and you'll hit on some that'll work.

the reality is that a good percentage if not the majority of sites with pictures on them don't have the licenses to use the images.

there are a few things that go into how likely it is that you will be on the receiving end of a lawsuit.

    1. if i take a funny picture of my dog and upload it. then others copy it and me and my dog become famous off of it. What is real likely hood i am going to file lawsuits against all those people who used my image without asking me. it really goes much deeper from legal standpoints, but on the surface you have to realize that many people who take images just don't really care how they are used.

    2. now what if you take that picture and add some commentary or maybe put something controversial like a swastika in the picture with me... making a derivative work that makes fun of me. Now the likely hood of you receiving a lawsuit from me has gone up substantially.

    3. if you take images that a stock photo site has in their inventory, the likely hood of getting a letter from a lawyer is actually pretty good.

as for others who use images like some of the examples mentioned in the thread. Does anyone know how many pending lawsuits those sites have against them? i doubt it.

Just because someone else is doing something doesn't make it legal. Those sites may be using Russian hosting for all i know.... i didn't take the time to check.

The reality is that if you make a habit of using images you don't have the right to use, then its not a matter of if you will attract unwanted legal attention, but WHEN.

you would begin seeing a little traffic from Google images. But you should also try to write unique content

      I agree 100%.

If what you are looking for to start with is traffic... any traffic you get from those images would be so un-targetted that it is hard to imagine how you would monetize it effectively.

The amount of useful, valuable traffic you would get from the effort of writing just one page of well-thought-out content would be so much better than whatever you get from already-circulated and probably-ripped-off images that it's like comparing apples to oranges. And that's without the legal issues!
