Yes the vast majority of people who fail at Internet Marketing just don't stick with it long enough. Yes you definately have to have some knowledge in different techniques. But those are not hard to master. What is difficult is sticking with it and maintaining focus. I know that I went through a period where I started to get pretty good response from Article Marketing. But then I got tempted by a bunch of "shiny things" and tried every new thing under the sun. I lost a lot of momentum and almost threw in the towel. But then I went back to a primary focus and stayed there. I must say that I'm not exactly making a killing yet but I do see the potential. So your remarks are very relevant and appreciated.

Oh and another point. I was watching the show Shark Tank last night. One of the Sharks is Mark Cuban who is a billionaire and the owner of the Dallas Mavericks. He said don't be afraid to fail. He failed many times but got back up and tried something else. And look what happened?

Kind of reminds me of the story about being three feet from gold by Napoleon Hill. You just never know how close you really are to realizing your dreams.

    This is extremely true.

Most people just need that "ONE" thing...It
could be the next email...It could be their
next relationship. It could be that one
breakthrough that they need to tear open
    the gates of opportunity.

No question you have to keep chipping away...while you definitely should not jump from "shiny object to shiny object" you do have to make sure that you are focusing on a business model that can work and can be scaled...

Also, was the guy using the right tool for the job? Maybe investing a little money & getting a jack hammer or something along those lines would have helped him get there faster.

      Excellent point!

Keep moving forward but keep your eyes wide open all the time for anything that will help you along the way.

  • Hmmm in my experience, people rather fail because of the lack of direction, not because of the lack of drive. That picture implies that new IM'ers know the direction towards success (they just quit too soon), to which I disagree: most people don't even know which direction to start digging.

I would somewhat agree with you tha a lot don't know which direction to go, but I think the picture implies that there are many who do get close to success and then quit or stop and head off in another direction. They were actully going in the right direction, maybe they did know it, for sure, they were not convinced, and quit.

      This ^^^ exactly.

I don't always agree with our anonymous friend, but I've never agreed with him more than I do today.

I accept that all the other comments above do indeed apply a small minority, but I'm convinced that most people who fail do so not because they don't take enough action, or give up too early, but because they take endless misguided action: at exactly what stage they give up often makes absolutely no difference to their outcomes, because they've set off in the wrong direction.

I agree. For most people, taking action is NOT the problem. The problem is finding the appropriate direction towards which to take that action.

Lack of direction might be the reason why many people are failing, but I don't think it is the reason for the end of the road, nail in the coffin type failure of quitting.

I think that is down to the individual.

I think many people might well head off in the right direction but quit just before it starts to happen for them because they thought it was going to be easier and quicker (which is how I interpretted that image).

But someone heading off in completely the wrong direction but with an excellent attitude who takes massive action, is up for the fight, will just hang on in there and never quit no matter what, would (presuming they were reasonably intelligent and keep on researching and learning) eventually figure it out and get onto the right track and make things happen.

With all the distractions around any marketer trying to get ahead in IM I would say that the biggest reasons for failure are jumping around too much and not staying focussed.

You need to be motivated and have a compelling reason to be doing it to start with and then you need to model someone that has done it before (get a coach).

If you try it out alone, it is so easy to get sidetracked and not finish anything, or not give a method the time it needs to be successful.

Take baby steps to begin with and build on them and then rinse and repeat

        That's my opinion anyway

        cheers

honestly, having watched this stuff for many many years, i think it is mostly due to lack of action.

However, i don't think the lack of action is caused by laziness or a true unwillingness to work in most cases. Although there will always be some of those people.

Rather, I think most people never take much action because they don't have much confidence that their actions will lead them to the success they seek.

So i tend to largely agree with Anonymous and Alexa that the bigger underlying culprit is a true lack of direction and a fundamental lack of confidence that what they are being told to do will actually work.

What a wonderful story, I really liked the picture and I was trying to add in my Pinterest board and I don't know why Pinterest is not allowing to show the picture.

Yes why do people stop to a certain where if they do one more step they could reach the money making machine, but unfortunately so many scam and false promised have made the people to go back to their own Job again.

People should never give up on their business or any business, I am seen not only online business but some offline business also give up because they don't know how to do business, complains everywhere..

Image speaks thousands words.. thanks for sharing it..

I saw this picture on another thread somewhere on the forum but forget where... At the time it made me think of the true story where a man went out west during the gold rush, bought a plot of land and started digging.

After a while, the man struck gold. He went back to his east coast home and told his family about his luck. They promptly moved to the gold site and bought expensive equipment to begin mining. After a short time, they dug up all the gold the man had originally found - it wasn't that much. They kept digging and still found nothing.

Eventually they concluded that there was no gold left and that their efforts would never bear fruit, so they decided to quit. They sold their equipment to a local.

This local was smart and decided to ask a professional mining engineer if there was any gold left on the property (which the original owners never did). The engineer replied that there was in fact gold left - a huge amount of it.

He said that the previous owners had stopped digging only three feet from the new vein of gold ore. So, the local dug it up and became fantastically rich.

      The original owners got nothing.

The point is, you never know how close you are to success - you might only be three feet away. Don't quit and you will eventually strike gold. If you do quit, you might never know how close you came to success.

This is true; I started 7 years ago with internet marketing. Failed many times…gave up 2 twice but kept coming back to it because I knew there was a way. I am glad I did because I did hit the diamonds

All it takes is one way that it works. You can then follow that way over and over again and grow your business.

The one at the top looks younger and energetic..I wonder if he will keep breaking through til he get to the diamonds. The other man looks worn out and discouraged maybe because he'd been breaking through that hole long enough til he decided it's time to give up.

In life or in Internet Marketing, you got to try and try until you succeed. For example in IM, information is everywhere (you just got to ask and read) to get you in the right direction and have you equipped with the right tools.

Thanks for this post. I am a beginner and I will keep this in mind. Served as a lesson for me today.

This picture is very far from describing how success usually happens in reality.

Only a stupid person can be digging for several years without finding any evidence along the way that he's doing the right thing, like the guy in the upper tunnel - he didn't already find one single small diamond that could serve as an evidence that there is more to be found if he digs farther. He's just blindly digging like an idiot, hoping that one day he will find the BIG treasure. It does not work that way in the real life, except in very, very rare cases.

In the real life, people succeed because they first make one dollar, then 10 dollars, then 100 dollars, then 1000 dollars...and so on, by doing something right. Then they scale it up and make real business out of it.

You should be making some money out of your efforts within reasonable time frame. If you are not making a dime after you have done it all as the book says, burn that book, DO give up, and do something else.
