Important: Re PM spamming here

This has been mentioned in a couple of threads, but it needs to be highlighted.

Do not click on links in spam.

The trigger for this one is a blast of PM spam being sent using several compromised accounts on the forum. It's not certain yet if the spammers got the passwords by force (dictionary attack) or through malware on the machines belonging to those members.

Practice safe hex, folks.

Point 1: Always use strong passwords.

Point 2: Use up-to-date security software on your systems, and never assume that's enough by itself.

Point 3: Never respond to offers in spam.

This particular one will make a nice example. First, the target domain was registered through a Chinese registrar. It's got Russian DNS (and probably Russian hosting). Almost certainly botnets involved in the process.

To sign up for the "free account," you need to give them an email address and phone number. Unless you're surfing using proxies, they'll have the IP address associated with your machine. And all the other info your browser relays in the normal course of surfing. Notably your browser type and OS.

Everything needed to make it easier for them to hack your system, crack or social engineer their way into other accounts, etc, etc.

Just stay the hell away from stuff that's advertised in spam, folks.

Oh yeah... Don't use the same password on multiple sites.

And, by the way, don't pay for things you find via spam. Great way to hand the spammer the keys to your account...

Same password with the sites means??: for our G-mail accounts or some-think else.
And if we use same Password than what will it effects???
      Please explain it.

It doesn't get much more straight forward but I'll try and break it down further.

Don't use the same passwords across lots of sites because if they get details of one of your passwords then they have the passwords to all of them.

Seriously, just have a different password everytime you have to have a password.

If you need further clarification I'm afraid that's as good as it gets.

If Paul may allow, let me share my knowledge on this.

Russel - It's a common knowledge, a norm, or a human nature to have the tendency to be forgetful, at times. Because of that, we 'may' be using the exactly same password for our business and email accounts (e.g. email, online banking, ATM card, etc).

Once this 'hacker' or 'cracker' gets into one of your accounts, he will also think that you may be using the same password for your other accounts. Just in case he can't log in to your other accounts using the password he has stolen, he will check the syntax or semantic of your password. I don't want to go deeper this topic as others may misinterpret me that I'm teaching others on how to do 'that' malicious stuff.

DISCLAIMER (for those who think I'm a hacker because I know this stuff):
I am not a privacy invader. I worked for one of MS' security department.

          MRW,

Thanks. The pattern issue is one people rarely discuss. We see it every day when moderating, but that's more in the way spammers label their accounts, post their junk, etc. Same principle, though.

The spam that inspired this thread seems to be a phishing effort. It's narrowly enough targeted to almost qualify as spearphishing. I'd be curious to know if it's limited to this forum, or if it's hitting members of other marketing forums as well.

Paul my wife and I were discussing this very thing a few minutes ago.

It's important to make sure your family members are aware of the dangers of spam e-Mails and what can happen to them. Even after all the warnings that are out on the web and even on TV and radio folks still fall for it.

I'm very appreciative of the security measures provided by this forum and the quick action when someone spams the members through the PM system.

I second that wholeheartedly. If other forums and social networks, notably F***book and Tw****r, policed themselves half as well they would be friendlier and safer places.

    Good info!

Just treat your WF account and links in it, like you would your new Lambo... never, ever let anyone have the Cardkey!

Never use family info in passes, birthdays/first names/family names/pet names, as most of this info is ALREADY known by everyone!

Passcode your logins with 256bit AES, 14+ length combos, made up of special and numerical characters.

If you have to spend 30 secs, entering a LONG passcode on a login/bank/forum and you find it hard to remember, that is a GOOD thing, it makes the sp4mmers/m4lware/h4ckers job so hard it is not worth the hastle...

NEVER click on ANY PM or Spam link anywhere, unless you already know it or have asked for it...

Yeah, I got one of those spammy PMs too . It is a shame that people want to take advatage of this forum in such a way. They would be better off to just read the tips and try to learn something. With the efforts they put into being spammers they could have gotten some real work done and made some real profits, but now they are banned instead :p. Again, its a shame.

Good reminder and there is a place above a spam pm at this forum where you can report it (it is a little icon). I typed in the username and the message itself when I did that because if you don't do that, the mods may not know who sent it (if you delete it out of your inbox).

I also got the spam pm but noticed the dude/dudette was already banned and as I have been reading your posts about spam pms, Paul, knew not to click anyway.

My question is about pms stating the person is going to be coming out with a new WSO and would I please give a review for them. I've suddenly been receiving several from different warriors that I don't even know. Is this okay here on the forum or not so much?

I didn't respond to them at all because it was obvious they were just trying to butter me up, lol! "I've been reading your posts here on the forum and you seem to have a good business mind, you are very wise, you are well liked, you are well respected, you have a lot of thanks that will help my WSO, blah, blah, blah..."

One even had the audacity to not even send a "review copy", but suggested I go to the WSO, purchase it and leave a review...seriously?

Anyway, I have no intentions of responding to them at all, but wondered if it was allowed. I've never had it happen before this past week and wasn't clear on the rule regarding them.

      Thanks!

I got one of those recently, but I responded with a polite "no thanks". I actually said I was in the middle of a project, which I am.

Although members should not be soliciting for reviews via pm, I'm still a bit of a "softie" because I understand completely the state of the economy and how many people are desperate for money, (I live in an economically-depressed area) so I did not report this particular warrior.

Maybe because the warrior was very humble in his request, or maybe it's because I just don't like to hurt people when they're already down.

I wish we could just get it into people's heads that there really is enough money to go around, and that they don't have to do dumb things to get money, that all they have to do is rely on their own efforts, and that anyone, I mean anyone, can make a living online, regardless of race, age, gender, education.

then we wouldn't have to always "police" everything.

        yeah, I know, I'm a dreamer...

I didn't respond at all, as I just didn't have the heart to say no or actually give a review. I might not have said what he expected me to.

I didn't report any of the ones I received as I didn't know if they were actually breaking a rule.

I'm hoping that if it is against the rules and is stated here, perhaps any others will be dissuaded from doing the same thing.

I've gotten a lot of these and don't really consider them spam. An attempt at getting a review from someone more well known than them. It's kind of like a networking thing, even if it doesn't always work. It doesn't annoy me and I've actually thought a couple of the products were worth a look.

A few I just told that I don't do reviews unless I've opted to buy the product on my own, which is mostly true, with a few exceptions.

I never report these as spam. The one I got today was an obvious mass pm spam attempt. The others don't seem to be to me and are harmless and just people trying to do business, get to know people and get ahead.

MissTerraK and others, there's no rule against sending PMs asking for reviews or whatever - but it can still be a risky proposition.

If the recipient perceives your PM as spam for whatever reason, they may report it. A member who annoys too many people in that way could be in trouble.

But if you approach people respectfully, as individuals, rather than sending the same PM to dozens of people - and avoid bothering people who are known to be cranky about PMs - then you should be okay. You might still get a negative response, but that's the chance you take.

Personally, I ignore unwanted solicitations and only report the really egregious PM spammers.

            Doug,
What are the rules about spamming PMs anyway? Ive noticed a trend of receiving clearly mass PMs from other members advertising their products.
If it's just a straight out ad, it's not allowed. Reasonable contact to suggest a joint venture is okay. Beyond that, the "rule of thumb" comes down to keeping your contacts to things that would be considered appropriate at, say, a business seminar.

Normal business networking is allowed, but if too many people complain about the contacts, we're going to act on the complaints most of the time.

Caution is a good idea, because a lot of people don't like being pitched on anything at all by people they don't know.

Also very important in addition to having a strong password: Do NOT use real information for any password reminder prompt, like:

"What was your first pet's name"
"What High School did you graduate from", etc.

Doing that is about as insane as making your actual password "password" or "12345". Lots of people people with Facebook accounts voluntarily give up the answers to those questions (yikes).

Solution: Use nonsensical answers and keep them safe somewhere. Example:

"What was your first pet's name?": SnarkyDrizzleFish$2

"What High School did you graduate from?": Jupiter#*reMedial

Remember, once someone can into your main email account, they can use "I lost my password" to re-set ALL of your passwords, including online banking, etc. Stay safe.

Ah yes, a PM matching these descriptions hit my PM box this morning, waking me up in fact. I was confused as to whether this activity was permitted across the forums. For clarity's sake, is promoting our products/services in this way permitted or are such actions restricted to the WSO forum? (Which is really where they should stay, in my opinion at least.)

Alan should just move the entire forum to a monthly paid site! $5 or $10 a month would cut down on a lot of spam posts and PM's and would only attract those seriously interested in IM in the first place.

I receive similiar messages from compromised accounts almost daily. I suppose what is obvious to me isn't to others. Always type in a URL you want to visit rather than clicking on a link. Always question something that looks fishy.

    Thank you Paul.

I got the spam in email, not PM. The email is product@warriorforum.com, limited@warriorforum.com and offering WSO affiliate products.
Because of the email domain, I thought at first it's really from Warriorforum's staff.

Yes, I have noticed a lot of offers coming in my regular email that says it is from the WF, and it is spam, so this must be tied to that in some way. Thanks and off course I just delete it, but as usual it is a pain.

Not likely. The former is just plain old affiliate spam. The site advertised in the PM spam is a lot more potentially dangerous.

I've noticed a big increase in this lately - I get the same "Get your website to the top of Google" spam every day.

Eurgh. Spam sucks - I can't wait for them to get banned!

    repost:

    GUYS! (& GALS!)

NEVER click on ANY PM link, without copying it and / or reverse short URL checking it FIRST!

Even if you are in a hurry / late for an appointment / making love / bored, just be clever and take some time to check it!!

There are LOTS of ways to protect malware/spamware/botspawned links on your PC/MAC, get some of those ways installed and make them PART of your IM life!

The more protection you have, the less chance you have of being h4cked/p4wned/0wned etc etc!

Thanks for watching out for the members of WF paul, it'll really help out some of the new members as they usually will click on the spam links. Also just to be safe if anyways has clicked them make sure to change your passwords.
