Solo Ads and Ad Swaps Versus Buying or Renting Email Lists

Just a quick question - if you have used mailing lists to build your own list - and I am talking about the double opt-in variety here - when do you use ad swaps and solo ads like those listed here as opposed to renting or buying a mailing list from one of the larger companies? I know size of effort is one factor, but it seems that real value can be had with one of these list companies, assuming you find a good one.

If you have used mailing lists it would be great to hear your assessment.

ad swaps and solos have worked 100 times better in my experience.

I once bought a list of 5000 emails that had all signed up for 3rd party offers that made it legit.

However the difference was that with ad swaps and solos, the receiver is usually being contacted on your behalf by the person who owns the list...and are therefore fine with it.

I was getting very low conversions on my bought list as no one remembered that they had signed up for 3rd party offers from the broker i purchased it from. So my spam complaints also went through the roof.

So my advice would be...don't buy or rent lists as its a waste of time...and only use solo ads if you need to.

    Hope that helps.
    Sam.

You're talking about cold leads here...

Always think in terms of conversion, instead
of traffic. You can't go wrong with
    conversions.

Solo ads are acceptable. Try swaps too.

Samuel, some lists mail from their own servers, so if that happens the spam issue would not be as great right? And I agree on the numbers, of course if you are paying a lot less per click it might even out.

Generally, I think a lot of the big players in this business use email lists that they buy. If that is the case what is the point where using that strategy pays off? Or am I wrong as to what I hear about the use of email lists by some of the larger players?

yeah there'll only be a spam issue if you obtain the list and contact them cold.

There are also different standards of lists when you go for solo mailings. Some are highly saturated, so do your research first.

Don't know if i agree about most big shot marketers buying lists. Usually they're where they are cos of a list that they've nurtured from the ground up and over a long period of time.

The good thing about this business is that "People don't succeed cause they aim too high and miss, no, they aim too low... and hit. Most people don't aim at all." (Les Brown)

Not us... Not marketers. We live far above mediocrity. Always keep this in mind at all times..

They both work if and only if you can find reputable and trusted providers of solo ads or email lists. Actually the email list exchange works the best on related offers.

When using solo ads, you must be very careful as the providers go to microworkers or alike sites and buy the optins. So they pay like 25 cents for an optin and you pay them 1- 2-3 dollars. A large profit and thus many scammers.

A member of this forum released a WSO recently where he says he found a list of trusted solo ads suppliers. Check it out: Inner Circle Solo Ads.

He also says he tested them and they are legit. I dunno, i did not buy that list, so i can't tell.

There's a few good points on this thread but this is not one of them. Why would ad swaps be fabulous for any business. It seems to me that ad swaps are designed to build a list...NOT a responsive one though. I wouldn't swap my buyers list with anyone, especially people who believe it is a fabulous approach to creating a solid sustainable business.
