Upsell and Downsell Techniques..

On my clickbank product I have an upsell but they convert terribly!! Like really bad..

I was wondering if there is a method (or product) out there that teaches upsell and downsell techniques?

Is your upsell closely related to your frontend offer? and is your frontend offer free or paid?

Successful upselling depends on a few crucial factors such as how closely related are your original offer and your upsell? You can't join a hydroelectric energy program with a solar power course or selling wordpress plugins and HTML templates together.

    Factor #2
What is the price difference between them? If you're selling a $7 product, and a $100 upsell, the buyer might feel cheated. Similarly, if yours is a premium priced product, and your upsell is also expensive then you won't find many buyers either. Like a $200 upsell for a $300 product. Overall you should try to keep the prices as reasonable as possible. It is just an upsell, and hence it can't have a price any close to the original offer.

And the usual elements like the quality of the sales letter of the upsell also contributes. You should be highlighting the fact that it may not be necessary for use with the original offer, but it definitely enhances the overall experience.

      I disagree.

The crucial point between front-end offers and upsells in not how closely related they are, but rather how closely they complement each other.

For example: if I sell a Wordpress Theme as a front-end, it makes no sense to offer as an upsell yet another Wordpress Theme (even though they're very related offers). It'd make more sense to offer a plugin or an add-on that complements the original theme.

Conclusion: when it comes to upsells, think in terms of "completion", "add-on" or "enhancement".

AA - makes a really good point here.

Upsells work best when they complement or make a product more complete.

I find upsells that work really well are ones that help people make use of the information in an easier way.

        Who doesn't want something easier?

        Hope that helps!

It will all depend on your product how well you can upsell. Say for a Wordpress theme, since others have mentioned it. Here are some ways to upsell something like that, so you maybe will get an idea for yours.

With a Wordpress theme, you can make the theme exclusive to one site and sell it for $27. Then, one upsell will be a developer license, which if people are buying your theme, they iwll probably want. Sell that for $27 or less. For lower priced products, I have always found you need to keep the upsells at or below the first price. Leave the big upsells for later when you email.

Then just keep expanding on that idea of adding more value to the Wordpress theme. Add an installation option. Make them pay for the PSD files. What about great hosting for that theme? Or you can even sell ebook on how to SEO with Wordpress or some other Wordpress topic.

Upsells are endless, but you need to make sure they add value to the reason they are buying. Hope that gives you a spark or two!
