It was easy to learn and once I got started it got even easier. I also have a hard time with design, so the themes available made things way easier.

If I had definitive hard evidence I wouldn't have wrote "Google seems to love WP"

I wrote it "seems" to love WordPress because that has been my personal experience. My websites all ranked much better soon after converting them to WP. But, maybe I was just lucky, Matey.

Sure. In HTML if you have security problems with the structure of your web site the burden of discovering them falls on you. With wordpress, they send an update and fix it. I guess that's about as simple as I can put it.

You're not really into moving the conversation forward here, are you? Writing responses like "Even worse" doesn't really teach me anything or explain what you mean.

I've answered your constant question about where I get the security holes in my post above. If my answer is wrong or even if it's just plain stupid I think I'd rather have you explain it instead of asking the same question over again several times.

Wordpress is a security nightmare. The holes they keep on plugging...

Caused by wordpress itself.

People who do not know how to secure a simple html page should NOT rely on wordpress for security but should hire a competent webmaster to assist them in securing their websites.

But if you are an admitted security dunce, which you stated you are,... you are worse off than if you were dealing with ordinary html page.

So for people in your position, who must use wordpress, I would suggest a dose of reality...

Wordpress has not provided you any benefit of being more secure. The opposite is true. Hire a professional to help keep you secure.

Even companies who we consult who are making millions a year and that employ development teams and so called "wordpress experts..." occasionally come to us scratching their head and cannot figure out why their website suddenly stopped working the way it was... only to have us point out that the wordpress website they had been depending on has been hacked.

Wordpress and all it's band aids released for previous security holes is no remedy for all your security woes

So, no, increased security is not a benefit of using wordpress vs html.

Security is something you must manage your self... whether using wordpress or html. Having wordpress or any script running on a website just makes the job of keeping your website secure bigger.

X100. Wordpress straight out of the box is HORRIFICALLY unsecure. The more plugins you add, the worse it gets. There's absolutely no need to add a plugin to add Google Analytics code or other simple tasks. There are literally hundreds of thousands of Wordpress sites out there that have no security methods applied. Install a fancy plugin that someone created but no longer supports/develops? There's where about 80% of the security flaws come in.

As much as I have been a huge supporter of WordPress, and a former WordPress contributor, I have to agree with Josh. You can leave a static HTML and CSS site untouched for weeks on end, and it wouldn't be a problem. You can't do that with a WordPress site. You need to keep it updated, checked, and secured.

No open source software is totally secure out of the box but WordPress has got to be the worst of the lot.

But you can't beat it for features, speed of deploying a fully-functional website, and relative ease of use.

Well try out X-site Pro then, about as easy to use as this editor. I have many websites using X-Site Pro that rank in googles top 3 for competitive local markets in Charlotte NC, just start with the blank template, make your left panel 210 pixels, your main panel 500 pixels, your right panel 250 pixels then there u have a nice 960 wide site comparable to wordpress 960 grid.

The other Gentlemen's point was where did u get those security gaps again?? Wordpress. I don't have plug-in holes with an HTML site.

WordPress is really good for Internet Marketing, because as warriors mentioned before you can change themes, install plug-ins and ta-ta-ta and etc.

For me using WordPress is most uncomfortable thing in my business. I am web developer and it always comes down to "it's working fine, I just need change this and this". I install 4-5 plug-ins to get required result and get 99% job done with no efforts, but still not happy.

tdj WP is a great tool until you want to do basic stuff.

Most of warriors will say that you can hire someone on oDesk and they will do job for you. This is true. Just sometimes price is too high

Seriously. For my simple idea I got the most cheap offer of $700.

Finally, if you will know HTML this will help you to operate WP with more confidence.

HTML is a programming language (Hypertext markup language).

I stopped coding whole sites in Dreamweaver/Frontpage/even vi a couple years ago. It started with Movable Type. You had to "build" the site everytime you made a new page or change something. Wordpress is dynamic, which helps you build a site quickly. So I'd say that's the main reason. I'm a very technical person. I script in shell script on my UNIX system (FreeBSD and Linux mainly), however just because I *CAN* do something the hard manual way, doesn't mean I choose to (especially when it comes to blogging).

  Can I just point out as a person that uses a HTML web page editor that some of these assumptions in the posts are wrong!
  
  1: The first that pops up a few times is that you need to be a programmer to create HTML pages. Well that is why there are editors that can create HTML pages for you without you needing to write a single line of code. I use XSitePro of course (see the tag line ) , others are available.
  
  2: Google is supposed to love WordPress. If this is the case why do I not see more blogs in the search engine results? And believe me I do a lot of searches a day.
  
  3: WordPress is supposed to be easy to set up. How can this be when you have to create, maintain, and backup a database as well as creating your content. HTML web page editors are all about creating content without all the security overheads (you do back up your work to your local disk don't you? )
  
  If you are working as a group collaborating articles, then a database driven solution (WordPress, Durpal, Joomla, any Wiki, etc) has a place. If you are working on your own creating web sites then database driven solutions a big, slow, and prone to being hacked.

I have sort of a love/ hate relationship with WP. First, I disagree that WP is necessarily "easier" than building an HTML site -- making even the smallest of changes in PHP can be a nightmare. However, as others have already mentioned, I think Google favors WP (for some ridiculous and silly reason), so I continue to build with it.

The number one reason......it's super easy to install and get up and running. I do also use Xsitepro to create html sites and that is very easy to use also. But with Wordpress you have so many themes and plugins, its pretty much all you need to build a top notch website in minutes.

I know HTML and CSS inside out, But I use Wordpress any change I get,

It's the easiest software to install,

There are 1000's of free plugins and some class paid ones.

You can update it from anywhere you want in the world using the internet. Even you smart phone, Unlike HTML where you need a editor and FTP.

There are ton's of themes that install at 1 click.

You can move things around on your site using widgets in seconds.

hands down it wins 100% over a normal HTML site.

There are many reasons to choose WP than an HTML site, not everyone knows how to use HTML, WP is very easy to be learned and it has so many free plugins which make it much easier to build a dynamic website.
Also with WP you can create a blog, a site with memberships, a forum and is totally free. It's just a simple way to have a website without the knowledge of much programming.

I have a few older HTML sites that are still alive. Only one I regularly update.
(Frontpage)

For the last 3 years, I exclusively use WordPress.

I love the fact that you can update your content immediately.

The wide variety of plug ins available (both free and paid) add much to the flexibility and ease of use.

Also the fact that it can be set up so quickly and easily. Easily!

- Lots of beautiful themes that's easy to customize
- Lots of useful plugins, no need to install some tricky scripts.
- Why writing from scratch if WP handles everything including updated content?
- SEO friendly and user friendly
- Very much editable (the CSS)

I prefer not to use Wordpress as I have written my own CMS platform that I use for my sites. I see absolutely no point in re-learning another thing if I can write effectevely what wordpress does but in a much smaller package. Then I have complete control over everything. I don't understand why people who are good at PHP and mysql would want to use Wordpress? However if you are not that way inclined then I am sure it would be easier to learn Wordpress than HTML, CSS, PHP and Mysql.

Let me give you a few reasons. I know HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, jquery, etc., exceptionally well. However, I prefer to use WordPress for small projects. There's no point in designing a new theme with Photoshop, coding it, and creating all the functions I need just for a $500 profit. With WordPress, I can easily create this with the click of a few buttons.

However, I do understand what you mean from another standpoint. Coding your own material is much more flexible and I do use it often, however, my time is not worthwhile to code everything.

Just to create a simple website including designing the complete theme, coding it, creating all the functions I want it to perform and other basics, takes at least a day, if not more. With WordPress, everything is simplified and I can do everything I need to do with just a few clicks.

I'm a die-hard HTML guy, but I'll play along...IMO, the best features of WP are:

Self-Linking...Just make a post and links are added to that page. Calendars act as site maps, etc.

Creates an RSS pheed automatically.

Auto ping.

I have one reason for using Wordpress as opposed to HTML...

1. EVERYONE else is using it. (Yes, if everyone else jumped off a bridge, I probably would too...)

Too many people hear the word HTML and immediately go into a state of unnecessary panic. They don't realize how goddamn simple it actually is and they never will because they just dismiss it without a thought.

Everyone reading and posting in this thread understands that there is no such thing as WP vs html right? WP is a platform that generates html, its the same as when someone uses dreamweaver or frontpage. Except you use a CMS that dynamically builds the HTML rather than manually creating the HTML. I just cringe when people say they prefer WP over html, WP is just one of many tools that builds html so you cant compare these 2 things.

Now if want to say you prefer WP over static html sites, then that is understandable.

I don't see the difference. Since making a website can be done using either Wordpress or writing/editing your own HTML code, then the two methods of making a site are valid comparisons.

I think by now we are all aware that every page on the web is made up (at least partially) of some sort of HTML code...think you were just reading it the wrong way.

Hi,

With Wordpress you have to take care of it's security on top of the Web Server security. There are just too many newer leaks after fixing up some older holes.

So there would X hundreds of attacks against WP layer and Y hundreds more against the server layer.

X + Y = thousands of attacks.

With HTML, you just take care of the Y factor, and usually that worry is well covered by your hosting provider. Result = peace of mind.

On the other hand, anyone with great content but zero HTML knowledge can go to the market almost instantly with WP. Time to market = speed means a lot to product owners and marketers.

The other great thing about WP is Content Management. Anyone can manage their content easily with WP.

But then again, there are scores of User-Friendly HTML page-making software that can cover both : Speed and Content Management. Mostly are simpler than WP Admin itself.

So the HTML page-making software cancels off WP advantages already.

What about bigger scale deployment, such as a Portal consisting of thousands of pages? Can HTML or WP handle them?

The answer is nope. It has to be enterprise-class applications serving all types of content and rich-media from an enterprise-class library. Again the server can be hacked, a Y factor but almost zero X factor to worry about.

So bottomline, the choice to use WP or HTML is very situational.

I use WP sites for lazy projects that I can get away with BUT I would put a stringent security policy in place.

Be aware that most hackings and hijackings occurred were due to lax security policies - whether you're on Drupal, Joomla, WP, HTML or enterprise applications.

With all the respect to security issues and constant updating of your wp installations to latest version, there are couple of really good reasons to use wordpress:

- easy to learn the back end administration
- easy to change the design (just change the theme)
- hundreds of useful functions available through plugins
- you can mass produce and manage sites (build networks) easier
- can be used as blog, sales page, squeeze page, membership site, adsense site, review site, article directory, you name it
- publish any kind of content and even automate content publishing
- there are many useful marketing oriented scripts available that are easy to integrate with wordpress (amember, delavo, etc)
- it cannot beat html sites when it comes to seo, but it offers some easy to implement seo benefits to those who are lacking in-depth knowledge
- it's free
- it's well documented
- it's fun

And there are solutions like WP Twin, Backup Buddy etc. that make it easy to reproduce the site if it gets hacked.

I'd say that there are so many free and paid plugins available. If you have a need for a specific plugin it is probably already out there and all you need to do is look and you will find it.
That and Wordpress is very easy to learn even for those who are non technical.

I am a developer at roots, and recently got into internet marketing, advertising, etc (about 1.2 years ago).

I run 6 websites, one of which has around 25k unique users a day (it's a hot babes images type of website) for which i am now trying to find methods to monetize. 5 of the websites are static, html, the last one is a dynamic PHP website. Before i had wordpress websites, but had no success with them.

My experience:
- google indexes non wordpress sites a lot quicker (3 times it happened overning, i publish the site now, next day in the morning it is already indexed)
- google starts to ignore wordpress sites if they are not updated frequently (2-3 times a week at least)
- adsense is less effective on wordpress
- the seo plugins for wordpress are a complete joke at your expense
- most wordpress plugins slow down the site, effectively resulting in a slower site (and when you have several plugins - i am sorry for you)

Again, this is my experience. I would NEVER use wordpress for anything i do. None of my websites were affected by Panda or Penguin, where people i know running wordpress got kicked in the ass.

It sounds like you are developing the sites for sale to someone else. Would this change if you were building them for yourself and the profit depended partly on the performance of the site?

Enjoyed that. There was a topic here awhile ago, someone looked at the top 10 sites for a few different keywords, and very few of them were wp. He asked about the supposed advantages of it, and he was dubious.

Also the load time for some of the blogs I run across is very slow.

Why would you do html if you get all the benefits of wordpress. Plugins for everything and the membership stuff, email and and and... it is the easiest, best and most obvious choice.

Wordpress has plugins for just about everything which allows for customization. There are a ton of themes both free and paid. The learning curve to use it is relatively simple. Most hosting companies have one step install. It has pretty much become the standard in internet marketing. I could go on but that is enough.

Wordpress is easy to use and doesn't require technical knowledge. Anyone can learn to use Wordpress with little effort. Additionally, there are hundreds of free and premium themes that can be easily customized.

I was just curious because it seems that everyone is using wordpress even with the security issues. I am also contemplating purchasing Xsitepro and wanted some feedback from wordpress users to make an informed decision.

On a side note, if you want to convert sites from html to wordpress its not that simple from what I understand. Also if one would want to sell or buy a wordpress site, transferring files and reconfiguring everything may not be that easy.

Wordpress (or any other CMS): Harder at the beginning but easier later on.
HTML: Easier to get started but harder later on (maintaining / updating).

For something small ("brochure site") that hardly ever changes WP might be overkill.

I like wordpress because it is very versatile and user friendly. It's as easy as dragging, dropping and clicking to build a site. I tried my hand at html and while it was a good learning experience, wp web design is much less stressful.

Lot's of great reasons above...I personally love WP because it's easy to learn and use and easy to add just about any functionality you can think of with plugins. I don't stress over security issues because I have all my sites set to do automatic daily backups, so on the off chance that someone mean finds and messes with my site, I just restore it and I'm good. Overall, WP has been a great tool that's made my life a lot easier.
