Copying merchants autoresponder messages?

The product I want to promote does not offer their affiliates auto-responder messages.
Is it a good idea to subscribe and then use the same auto-responder (maybe edit them slightly) messages for my own list, or is this consider bad, should I ask the merchant first?

Sincerely
Karl

Sounds like you already know the answer.

Ask the merchant. And if it's no, it means no. (Just taking it is "copyright infringement" -- and each every email you send out is a separate count and since its for monetary gain, well, that's even worse legally.)

What Wendy said. Ask. Autoresponder messages can be rather short and effective so making your own wouldn't be the most difficult task. Or outsource it.

To subscribe to what? If the product has a vendor's opt-in on its sales page, then surely you wouldn't want to be promoting it at all?!

The merchant has many landing pages to choose from as an affiliate, so I can choose to redirect to a landing page without any optin (from my optin)

If they say no about copying the messages surely I could use them as an inspiration
    and rewrite them.

    Sincerely

Surely - using their ideas but not their words? They might not mind you using their words, anyway - no harm in asking?
