Something Weird Is Going On?...

Hi Guys,

Recently on the forum I have noticed several people
(usually members with 0 posts) posting in my
WSO.

Thats not the weird part.

Whats weird, is alot of them have 3 broken images
that show right at the end of their message.

===========================================

===========================================

Is this something to report?

I could be paranoid..but I am assuming that
they are cookie stuffing?

Take Care,

Michael Silvester

I didn't see the broken images (maybe these posts have already been removed) but I DID see some of the folks who have 0 posts but were "thanked one time in one post". Is this because they were thanked in the Warrior Special Offers forum and their posts don't count?

          Michael,

They are cookie stuffing.. Whenever anyone visits your sales page/thread, their browser attempts to fetch the image from the cookie-stuffers site, and gets cookied instead. (Usually with their affiliate code for a hosting provider.)

Some of the 'smarter' guys use a redirect on their site, so that the image your browser fetches is a smiley face, or similar, from WF. It looks exactly the same as the normal smiley, etc, but takes an extra second or two to load, and picks up a cookie along the way. You can tell that it is not 'genuine' by placing your cursor over it, and noticing that there is no small tag that the usual WF smileys have. ie The 'cool' 'eek' 'mad' tag will be missing.

I have also noticed teams of, say, three guys/accounts working in cahoots, where one guy makes a comment using a genuine smiley image, and another guy quotes the comment, but switches out the image for his doctored one. Then another guy might quote that later in the thread, so that the whole thread is littered with them. They then move on to the next thread. Most of these accounts are new, all having joined at the same time, and often have '0' posts (since their comments in the WSO section don't count/register.)

Yes, it needs to be reported.

Wow, didn't know anything about this practice...can you explain why they do it? I don't know too much about cookies, only that they are used to store information associated with certain websites when you visit them...like saving passwords and stuff...so what info are they tampering with or how does this benefit them?

Thanks for the info and I would like to better understand this...

      Hi Ash,

They do it so that whenever anyone who has the cookie on their computer goes to get website hosting, the cookie-stuffer will receive the affiliate commission. The cookie just has a bunch of text/numbers on it that the site uses to identify who referred the sale. Unless you make the effort to find and delete them (I use and recommend ccleaner), the cookies can sometimes stay on your computer indefinitely.

I too use ccleaner and am greatly satisfied with the product for many more uses than just cleaning cookies.

It's very frustrating to think something as benign as reading a thread can cause such a felling of violation when we contribute to the generation of income for these unscrupulous people.

Just a note ... when you quote cookie stuffers, you also stuff their cookies for them, giving them a lot more posts with cookies in them.

Too true.. It amazes me how often people do this. Sometimes they even 'thank' the guy, when it is clear that he has just cut-and-pasted someone else's comment from higher up in the thread, lol.

There's not really any [practical] way to tell the difference.. I just delete them all, a couple of times a day. If you are buying a product through someone's link, and you want to make sure that they get the commission, you could just delete all of your cookies beforehand.

There was a ton of cookie stuffed posts last night. They're still around this morning. Funny thing is, they're all the same person. He changes his domain every so often, but still easy to spot.

How do you notice the ones that use smileys?

Yeah, I noticed that too.. That 'justgotpaid' guy has been back (although now banned again ) and three other separate accounts were all using one domain as their cookie-stuffing source. I assume they were all they same guy, and perhaps the one that you are talking about.

I happened to notice the smiley face ones because they took a little longer to load than the rest of the page. Sometimes they show up as a broken image, but when you refresh the page they are there again.

Also became obvious because the same couple of guys kept showing up on different threads and quoting each other's posts. They all had '0' posts and join date: June 2012, so they stood out like dog's balls, lol.

I have known of people whom I believe to garner a far greater sense of achievement from earning a dishonest dollar then to earn an honest two.

Difficult for any reasonable person to believe but I assure you it's true in some cases.

It goes back to the concept of a conman. Sometimes these people enjoy the game of trying to get away with this stuff.

Or they could just be looking to make a quick buck and don't know how to provide real value, so they're stuck with BH methods.

Instead of reporting these people to the WF they should
be reported to the company they are promoting so they
lose their affiliate accounts. That would be a lot more
          effective.

            This is a great idea!

I did this at another forum I am a member of two days ago. I also reported their Blogger account. It was almost immediately frozen and it appeared to have been online forum 6 months. I don't know how long they were doing this sort of thing though.

I do that. I know the affiliate manager at HG. they are one of the companies the cookie stuffers use a lot.

if anyone sees a cookie stuffer promoting HG, let me know with any info you can get. If you can get the image location or url that makes it easy to shut down the affiliate account.

Unfortunately that open up another nasty. A person could stuff cookies for their top affiliate competitor in the same niche, and get his account cancelled. So this approach isn't taken.

well i learned something...that smiley face thing was totally new to me. someone had to spend a good bit of time working that one out. Man if we could get some of those guys to take action on positive things the world would be so much better off.

i am almost surprised there is not a wso on how to do this.
