For me, what make a membership site could attract so many paying members, because it has valuable contents that people can't find through google/ elsewhere and the contents are given periodically.

Absolutely content is king! The only thing that will keep people paying each month is if they feel that they are receiving value for money.

Fresh content and always over deliver I would say

You need to give your visitors their money's worth and value those who stick with you every single month.

Be accessible and transparent.

I've been running a piano lessons membership site successfully for 10 years now. To be successful, it's smart to find a niche and dominate it - if possible. That's what I did for 'new age' piano. As far as my top 3 pieces of advice? Here they are...

1) Persistance is the key to success (you don't have this, you won't have a business)
2) Patience is almost as important (if you really believe in what you're doing, it'll show and you'll start building up and up!
3) The offer - this is somewhat overlooked, but the offer or how you frame your membership to prospects is extremely important. Afterall, this is what will motivate prospects to purchase so it has to be very good! Some use the $1 trial offer to great success.

Its simple. You should have quality content the People WANT. Remember this and you will do well. If your content is not in demand then it will fail.

Is this a community or content site?

Because they're very different.

For a community site, you're looking at status indicators and recruiting contests. Give a special badge to the people who join early. Give another one to the people who refer the most new members. And give yet another one to the people who make the most useful posts.

For a content site, it's all about having high-quality content that's frequently refreshed and replaced. The fine line on this is that there should always be enough content to be worth the membership, but never so much that it's overwhelming, and there should be just enough content coming down the pipe every month that nobody wants to miss it.

There's also a "hump" every four months on most membership sites, where you should be delivering something REALLY special; if everyone's getting the same content at the same time, delivering a big content update every three months is just about right to keep retention high, but on a drip-feed system you can do it every four months. Seasonal contests work well on a community site.
