I have just finished my report which will be released shortly and am just finishing up on some of the final cosmetic changes.

I also read a report on how an eCover is an absolute must for an eBook to generate the maximum number of conversions.

Is an eCover needed for a report?

What are your views?

    No and yes.

    It depends on:

    1 - your market (is it a technical niche, a social/hobby niche)

2 - Your relationship with that market (are they organic search traffic, ppc, your list, other peoples list)

3 - How you're telling them about the product (are you preselling it, bundling it etc.)

4 - Price point (the higher the price, the more you usually have to 'sell' the benefit, and if you're selling to business owners or offering a technical product - they usually want to see a professional and detailed offer - even though many will skim read it)

It's all about your relationship with them and what your communication with them is like.

Opinion is just that and we each differ to some degree in what we think, so with that in mind I would just like to offer my view on your question.

If I was faced with the two reports and one had a cover and one did not, I would always choose the one with. I might even pay a tiny bit more for the one with a cover even though I know it is not real.

It's something to do with first impressions for me and thinking someone has made the effort.

    I hope that helps

My personal take is that an eCover is not needed, but is recommended to have. Having an eCover gives us a better impression that it's a real and physical product, thus increasing it's perceived value.

    My thoughts,

Thanks Dominic. I guess I should have phrased it better. lol

I know it is not NEEDED but for conversion sake, I have decided that it is recommended.

      Thanks

Thank you Andy, Ian and ProductCreator.

I see the importance in all your comments. Ian, I think I would do as you would if faced with 2 reports and only one had a cover.

That has spurred me to go in that direction and create a cover for mine. Besides, it brands itself better that way I think.

    Thanks again

Everybody does ecovers like they are a real book. You can
I think just make a graphic of some sort that looks like a book
cover - and integrate a PDF icon in it so people know what
they are getting. This is not something people are doing much
in the selling of ebooks but it does actually tell the customer
more accurately what he is getting.

    Test, obviously.

Tom Antion had a video he put out recently where he revealed
he had great results by NOT putting a picture of his $1000
speaking course on the sales letter. It makes it seem less
like a sales pitch. His argument does make sense because it
encourages people to read the letter for content rather than
scrolling for the picture, scrolling for the price, scrolling for
the bullets, and then staying or (usually) going away because
they've already come to a judgement about the "value" of
    the offer.

Something to think on and explore....

Having published several eBooks since 1999, I strongly recommend an eBook cover for the following reasons:

    1) A picture is worth a thousand words.

    2) It's more important if you don't have an established clientele base.

    3) The costs are nominal. For about $30, it could bring you back many times your investment.

    Best of luck to you--

Amazon just shows the cover graphic with a drop-shadow.
Users perceive it as a book. No 3-D needed.

    Something to think about.

As others have said it depends on the niche and where you intend to sell it. If it is making money online related and you will be selling it on sites such as this one or digitalpoint you really don't need one.

it makes a product seem tangible, and people can for once 'see' the value of it.

But a BAD ecover will Drive people away. My 2 cents:

Invest in an ecover that you KNOW will convert. Use a graphic designer who has a rep and is also cheap.

Covers are nice, but watch what you put up. The old saying, "you can't judge a book by it's cover", might not work here.

Make it simple but interesting. Some graphics maybe, or a photo.
