I am considering ning for a project .. but am still thinking about it.

My concern is that because ning branding apears on sign up forms and in different places which makes it easy and tempting for potential members to start their own network.

The long and short of it is that these platforms benefit the owners and are designed that way ...

I am realistic and do not resent this but want to be sure there is enough in it for me

  only thing is that im note a coder so buying or using these scripts and customizing them would either mean more money i need to spend or a damn big headache if i do it myself.
  
  I am also leaning towards NING because they have a simple point and click system for me, but i want my site customized, i want the ability ot have my own ads and of course no NING logo. I have sent them some questions today so hopefully i get a reply soon.
  
  For the meantime is there anyone here that can specifically give a good review of any script or other online service they have used for creating a social network?

Hi,

Are you looking only for already hosted solutions? Because there are a few cool scripts out there you can buy to start your own social networking site...full with profiles, video sharing, etc.

If you had your own script then you would be in full control in regards to monetizing it in any way you want. But it would be pretty server intensive as the community grew.

How would you go about marketing the site and gaining members? If income is simply from banners/adsense (hosted solutions) you'll surely need a LOT of members to make any decent money from what I can see...maybe I'm mistaken?

if your interested in making a social network platform of your own take a look at joomla and community builder, there are other plugins too that will build your network - these are open source and dont cost a penny... although donations are always welcomed

i have developed several sites for clients with a good number of members and theyre still growing daily

Ok dont think ill be using NING i just found this on their FAQ page:

How do I buy premium services for my social network?

no way im pay money per month just so the ning logo doesnt appear. And 4.95 per month just to use your own domain thats ridiculous! They really should consider doing a 50/50 approach with ad revenue instead.

Take a look at Dolphin. Very sharp script. It has a free version or upgrade for only $39 per year for one domain or $99 for unlimited domains.

Your Most Welcome.

If you use the joombyte hosting...they will install the script for you free. That will save you some time and money. It can be customized from there.

The reason I'm picking on joombyte is because, on one account, they will allow you to host the script up to 5 times.

Meaning...you can create a carnival of networks or sell/rent/lease the other social networks spots to help cover your costs.

Also...the guys at terabyte and jommbtye are very proactive with the Dolphine script. They also can move your database, and are more than confident to do so, over to the new script. Even though they will charge a fee for the migration of your site...it would be much smaller than if you had outsourced it to someone that may not know the script as well as these guys.

Plus...if it breaks something...they know first hand how to fix it.

This way your costs are kept at a minimum and you get the most competitent people working for you.

All your left with at this point is customizing your site.

Overall, your best bet for a social network is either the following:

1. DIY -create your plan & outsource the work overseas.
2. White Label - Check the whitelabel chart via Techcrunch
3. Software Solution - PHPFox, Ning.

All services will have its ups & downs. But I will say this, any mid-size social networking system that you develop will take a minimum of 3 months of planning, and then 5 - 9 months of development. You can quickly get started with Ning & services similar to Ning. It's not directly branded, but remember, you can always upgrade.

Nice suggestion, and I'm having a look at ning at the moment and seems like a good choice for a business and project management. I guess my only concern at this stage is that the ning marketing watermarks are on all of the materials for signing up so this could divert your prospectives into creating their own social sites! A great marketing ploy, so will investigate further! Thanks for your post!

For developing and instigating it seems NING could be good choice because of the simple interface, but it would be nicer to customise a little further though by removing some of the logos and default layout. Can anyone reccomend or provide a review of Php fox? Looks like it has similar features, but a greater level of customization.

i have used phpfox on a number of sites. for the price, i feel it is tough to beat. there are many nice add ons you can get for it, such as the use of myspace layout codes, vbulletin integration, and the ability to send gifts to users to name a few.

unfortunately, most developers charge for these "add ons" and they are not free like the vbulletin community offers. other than that, i have been pleased with phpfox.

When you start with a social networking platform you have few options. If you know what exactly you want to do and its not going to change in the future, hosted solutions like ning or kickapps are fine. You are confined to what they have in their servers. For some its okay. For most you will require some more control over the data and the network. In those cases you might want to host it on your own server/host. Here also make sure if you get the full source code or you are at the mercy of the developer. The best solution for somebody who needs the flexibility to do whatever direction future throws at you is a source available software platform hosted in your server/hosting account. there are bunch of them like PHPfox,iScripts Socialware, Dolphin etc..Other thing to watch out is the addon modules. For some you get the main software for $100, but then you pay $1000 buying addon modules to make it usable. good luck

I used Ning now and you CANNOT get away from the Ning branding so to speak. You can pay to have their ads removed BUT the logging in etc. is still Ning. Also, from what i understand there is no way to have paid memberships on it etc. It's very easy to use but there are lots of areas where you do not have control to run a full business. Ning has been around for a long time now. A clasmate from my high school (c/o '92) set up a network for all of the alums, and its been great.

Anybody wanting to create a network thru Ning its real easy... one of my buddies learned that my high school had a Ning network, so he created one for his high school. And if he can do it... I'm sure you guys can

Ning will be helping you out more than you will be helping them. Their page ranking is 8, so your link will gradually get more page rank faster than a site without a high page rank parent.

  I think one big problem with choosing BuddyPress is that when peoples login fail they are driected to a login page.. that says "powered by wordpress"..

There are open source solutions for creating a social network but of course you would need hosting for this. If you want total control over everything that is the route to go and be set up quickly.

Dolphin from Boonex is great but it requires the following pre-requisites for your server:

Linux/Unix (Red Hat, Debian, FreeBSD, Mandrake, etc.) or Windows OS, Apache Web Server ver. 1.3

If you're going to use media streaming features in some Flash apps, you should have VPS or Dedicated server in order to install and run RMS (Ray Media Server). You should be able to access root or administrator account on that server. JRE (Java Runtime Environment) ver. 1.6 or higher should be installed on the server as well.

The ports 1935, 1936 and 5080 should be open on the server (where Dolphin is to be installed) and on the local computers of your site's members

PHP 4.4.0/5.1.0 and higher

register_globals must be Off
safe_mode must be Off
exec() (executable files) must be allowed
allow_url_fopen should be On
allow_url_include should be Off

mbstring, domxml (only for PHP 4.x) and xslt extensions should be installed

MySQL 4.1.2 and higher

The magic_quotes_gpc extension is also required starting from Dolphin 6.1.5 version

If some security module is installed on the server (such as mod_security for Apache), it should be able to be disabled or set up for specific folders.

Direct connection to boonex.com should be able to be established (i.e. connection without requiring proxy authorization).

You should be able to run executable files (necessary for ffmpeg.exe)

The server should be able to read any document located in public_html directory via http protocol.

GD library compiled with FreeType fonts (for photo processing) or ImageMagick as an alternative

Sendmail or Postfix programs for sending emails

Ability to create Cron Jobs

20MB of disk space and 1MB of MySQL DB space for installation

8MB of disk space and 50KB of MySQL DB space for an average user

Your server should allow 15 KB/sec for media streaming capabilities for each user.

If all the above requirements are met on your server then you are ready for installation.
