What percent of your list should convert into sales?

Hello fellow warriors,

I am wondering what percent of your list should convert into sales? I am currently building a list and am trying to establish what a good sales conversion rate is for a list? As of now I am struggling to get sales out of my list, which is rather frustrating. As I spent a lot of time building that list. I now have a good idea how to generate traffic and get people to opt-in to my list, but the challenge for me now is actually converting that list into money.

Let's say I have 1,000 subscribers on my list. What percent should convert into sales each month? If I'm promoting an affiliate product where my commission is $20 and 10% purchase it, then that is $2,000 worth of sales.

I would be grateful if you could share what a monthly sales conversion should be out of a list. That way I can calculate how much I should invest in creating the list.

Thanks for your input,

Mark

I think your 10% scenario is not realistic. Here is the reality. Only 10 to 15 percent of your list will ever open your emails at any one time. The vast majority of your list only want your free offer. They will never buy a product. You probably only have 20 or 30 sales in your list, tops.

  • so what is the point of having a list?

Depending on your RELATIONSHIP with your list you might find an open rate as high as 80-90% - then depending on your content in that e-mail (or copy) - you might get a Click Through Rate CTR of 50% or higher. Finally if you are selling a product with your mailing - you may be lucky to get a buy % of anywhere from 0%-10%

In answer to your question "what a monthly sales conversion should be out of a list" you should be aiming for a minimum of $1 per person per month. For example 1000 people on your list - aim for $1000/month from that list - ie/ $27 product so 37 sales-ish.....

Again this is my aim and i reach it consistently - 1000 on your list is a great start and 1000/month may not seem like much... BUT keep growing your list and when you have 10,000 or more on your list the numbers will start to look better.

In answer to your question "so what is the point of having a list" -

You want to build a relationship with your list. Most people will not simply "buy your stuff" because you ask them to.

However if you collect e-mails and offer a free newletter or other great content - perhaps in the form of a mini-course - they will begin to trust you and a higher percentage will be likely to buy your stuff.

So how do we build a relationship with our list? You mentioned newsletters and stuff... we give more free stuff?

Are there any examples we can look into?

He, he... let's face it: 80-90% open rate and 50+% CTR are results FAR beyond the usual. It's almost a dream come true to 95% of all marketers.

More realistic: you have a list of 1,000 people. I won't count here the deliberately rate,
    which can be 2-5%.

    15% open your email = 150 people

    30% CTR = 45 people click

Your readers goes to a sales letter that have a 2% conversion rate (usual).

    2% x 45 = maybe 1 order

I'm speaking only from personal experience with the niches that I'm in - If your in the IM niche you will probably get far lower % unless your free content is superb.

And again depends on the product your trying to sell - how well you presell it - the offer - the copy and so on....

So how do we build a relationship with our list? You mentioned newsletters and stuff... we give more free stuff?

Again not sure what niche your in - but you should provide some incentive to initially join your list - a valuable report or similar which is VALUABLE - translated - not some crap you've copied and pasted together - but actually spent some time - or outsourced - to be valuable to your prospect.

Then once a week or more frequently - e-mail your list with some valuable new content that will actually enrich their lives.

A great example of giving great content away is Eben Pagen's (David DeAngelo's - Double Your Dating newsletter)

Eben actually has a great video (google it) called "moving the freeline" or something like that - he believes that you should GIVE your best stuff away - and the prospects will then throw money at you to buy your stuff.

He's literally got years worth of content in his autoresponder - read 100's of e-mails that do nothing but give great content and presell his products.

You should be thinking first and foremost - how can I give exceptional content to my readers first - the money will follow...

Once your readers realize how good your free stuff is - they will wonder "jeez if this is how good the free stuff is - imagine how good is the stuff we have to buy is!!!"

  • Thanks for the input. Interesting discussions. Would love to keep it going.

I am trying to build a relationship with my list by giving them useful content and free reports. At the moment I am getting an open rate of about 50% and a clickthrough rate of about 33%, sales rate is almost at zero which is the concering part.

I like the point of putting a value of $1 per subscriber on your list.

  • thanks for the great post. Very useful.

would you expect to get re-occuring sales from your list each month? I believe that is the general idea. I am thinking what is a great way to encouage your list to buy somethign from you every month, so you can have a consistent revenue stream on autopilot?

Again speaking from my personal experience - this has worked for me - yes you should expect sales each month from the same list assuming you keep a good relationship with them (don't force too many offers on them / continue to give quality content)

If your interested in this route of IM - I would recommend taking a look at:

      Michael Rasmussen's: MiniSite Profits Exposed

      http://www.minisiteprofitsexposed.com/thankyou.php

The course is several free videos - he does try to upsell you stuff which you don't have to buy and still get a really great product.

Anyway - he's pretty much the reason for my success - just follow the formula and you'll keep making sales.

Exactly. Depending on the size of your list and the ability to constantly offer them relevant solutions to their problems, and to improve your relationship with your list. Relevancy is very important even for your give-aways.

I didn't want to come across as negative, just realistic.

Lists are very valuable, but everything is not about numbers. As has been said, the relationship is everything. People have to be compelled to open your emails otherwise...

One way of doing this is to offer something free that reoccurs. Offer a free report that is continued over 10 more parts. Only give part of the solution and make them open subsequent emails to get more. It is important making them want for more so give them value in the first report but not the whole thing.

Also, you may have to show restraint and not sell them something right away. People know why you want them on your list so you have to gain their trust. You can let them know you will be selling something, but first show them that you will offer something of value for free so they are still listening when you make your offer.

This varies hugely depending on a lot of factors, best month I had from my 18,000 list was $31,800, the worse month about $2000, so even with the same list it varies massively on the offer, the email subject line and the email copy.

    Best
