Helpmegetfired.com - Will this work?

The Summary:

I am starting a non-profit organization.

I'd like to create a media ploy that drives an ENORMOUS spike of short-term traffic to a website unrelated to the non-profit. I have a devious idea to do so (see Full Text below), that has the potential to go viral if executed properly. I also have a viable approach to capturing e-mail addresses on this site.

I'd like to somehow monetize this site to raise money for the non-profit org. This could theoretically be achieved by using that e-mail list and other calls-to-action on the site itself, such as donate buttons linked directly to the non-profit bank account.

Full Text:

I'm in the process of starting a non-profit foundation. You can read more about that effort at www.futureceleb.org. We have already launched a small-scale program but will need about $500,000 in order to fully staff the organization, lease and construct our own facility, establish a 3 year operational budget, and begin our full community outreach efforts.

I'd actually like to raise $1,000,000, initially.

One of the 'out of the box' ideas I've conceived to raise that start-up capital is to hijack mainstream media and cash in on my 15 minutes of fame. This would be achieved by launching a small squeeze site -- www.helpmegetfired.com -- the purpose of which would be to encourage people to e-mail me suggestions on how to get fired from my current 9-5 job (and build an e-mail list in the process). The suggestions that won't land me in jail for more than a night would then be incorporated in a grand stand departure from my current employer, with every moment of it filmed in HD by a crew of professionals.

For example, I may stroll into the office with a college marching band performing an original 'I Quit!' song while tossing toilet paper rolls over the cubicle, all while declaring myself king of the universe. Or perhaps I could orchestrate a quick office power outage, at which point I introduce a laser light show that ultimately spells out I quit on the ceiling. I can envision Nerf guns, silly string, me attending a staff meeting wearing ONLY adult diapers a neck tie and flip flops, etc etc etc. There's really no limit to the level of creativity and envelope-pushing this endeavor could inspire.

I am imagining this site could tap into the emotion and frustration shared by your common underpaid, overworked wage-earner. There are plenty of disgruntled employees out there that have found themselves in a position of having to work jobs they hate (or ones they love at a salary they hate) to provide for their families. They are pissed off at the "economy", elected officials, their managers at work and pretty much everyone else in a position of authority. I believe they would strongly support someone who is willing to perform a bold act of rebellion against the very system they believe keeps many working-class employers like themselves 'oppressed'.

I have some media contacts that could give this effort some exposure, with the hopes of it going viral and being picked up by various other media outlets. In my opinion, it just needs the right spin to really take off.

Every dollar earned from this effort would go directly to the non-profit. Any ideas on how to ethically maximize the revenue potential of this idea? I do not want to do anything underhanded or misleading.

The question springs to mind; who exactly is behind the 'Future Celebrity Foundation', and what exactly is your role/gain?

It doesn't sound a particularly worthwhile cause, certainly not when compared to many other non-profit deserving causes which benefit people in real need.

A million dollars is a big ask. I'm sure there are better ways of going about it, if its legit.

What is or isn't considered a 'worthwhile cause' can be quite subjective. I'd imagine that to a cancer patient, or the family of someone grappling with cancer, a community program like this would not rank well in the worthwhile category. A single mother who watches her teenage son go out every night and place himself in physical danger, or get in trouble with the law, might have a different opinion about a program that could constructively occupy her son's leisure time with art and mentorship. A program like this might open his mind to new ideas and perspectives. It could potentially change/save his life. Unfortunately, this program will not cure cancer.

That said, I'd prefer to focus the dialog on monetizing a media ploy that drives huge amounts of traffic to a website in a short period of time, rather than discuss the merits of the non-profit org. I don't believe that discussion is germane to the task I am proposing, though you are welcome to feel otherwise.

you can't MAKE things go viral. you can help them and put them in a position to, but viral marketing is only part science and part luck.

I do see some logistical problems with your plan. Mainly, how long you can sustain any serious media coverage without your employer beating you to the punch and giving you a pink slip. Once you are fired or quit, the viral aspect of your plan are pretty much dead. Could a "how to quit your job site" still go on and be viral... maybe.

as for getting money for a non-profit. If you transition from viral marketing to asking for money very quickly at all, i don't think your message will be well received. Most will see it as a ploy to get money for you...not your cause.

Most non-profits don't start out with funding and then do a job. They start out with a passionate person who is doing what they can with very limited resources and that effort earns them more financial support.

Maybe you can make it work, but i see several areas for concern.

I've considered this, and have arrived at the conclusion that this would have to be done quickly and anonymously until the task is completed. So any promotional videos would have to be done with a contrived character as the front man. Likewise, any media story would have to refer to an alias name. Domain registration and all that jazz would have to be placed under a different name too.

This idea is still just an early concept at this point, having recently bought the domain for pennies from someone else. I'm sure logistics concerning anonymity can be worked out.

We are doing this now (site needs to be updated). We currently have studio agreements in place with local facilities, and a running program that is supporting a few members. In the process of brainstorming creative ways to quickly bolster financial support, as opposed to be the slow but greatly appreciated trickle we are currently receiving, the helpmegetfired idea was born.

Thanks much for your input, and to everyone else who may have stopped by the thread just to take a peek.

When I saw the phrase "help me get fired", I assumed it would be about how to outsource yourself, or make so much IM income that you could quit your job etc. There are books about this, such as "4 hour work week" or something like that.

I think you might get more interest doing something that people can use to help themselves, rather than just a quick laugh.

One idea, implement my idea of a use for "help me get fired", above, and link that to a crowd-sourcing site so visitors can donate to the non-profit, in return for getting something VALUABLE for themselves, such as real ideas on how they can outsource themselves and quit their own jobs!
