Ever Afraid to Unsubscribe Because it Looks Rude?

Every once in a while I will get double-subscribed to a mailing list since I use unique email addresses for every signup. So I'm getting two copies of every newsletter.

But if I unsubscribe one address I wonder if the sender will see I unsubscribed, and think I'm no longer interested in their product, service, or what they have to say. Wouldn't want to lose a friend or customer from an unsubscribe.

Am I just a pansy? Or is this an issue for others too?

I have had it happen to me. If it is the same email, I write to the list owner and tell them to fix it. Or I just unsubscribe ans say the hell with it.

If he's anything like me, he won't take any notice of who unsubscribed - let alone take personal offense to it.

If he does take offense to it, he needs to learn the difference between personal and business relationships.

You could remain double subscribed and see how he split tests.

Or just email him and tell him you're double subscribed but would like to remain on his list.

If it's a situation where feelings can be hurt, can't you just add an explanation with the unsubscribe? I was under the impression that most services gave that option.

I don't think they will lose any sleep over you (or any other person) unsubscribing

Like Mick said, I doubt they will even notice!

    Yep, You're a pansy!

I unsubscribe from lists all the time (usually the ones that message me more than twice a week).

This, from a lawyer?? Sorry, Brian, couldn't resist!

To answer your question, no, I don't worry about it. But I usually don't personally know the person who owns the list. If I did, then I might feel differently about unsubscribing. It would depend on the situation.

You're probably not being a full on pansy, maybe just a little pansyesque?

    Ha!
No, don't worry about it, just unsubscribe and pat yourself on the back that you had the consideration to even ask about worrying about it!

    Cheers,

I don't mind clicking the unsubscribe links in emails much, but leaving a skype room is a bit daunting to me. You know everyone gets to see the message that you left the room and don't really have interest in talking to them any more.

    You're a pansy Mr. Kindsvater.

In all seriousness, that reason for not unsubscribing has never entered my mind.

It would be great if a list owner had such a relationship with their customers that they felt a bit offended or concerned when one of the customers unsubscribed. If they really cared they'd chase you up, maybe with a feedback form while unsubscribing, finding out what or if there was a problem.

I always unsubscribe if someone is not providing value, whether they feel disappointed or not. I do see unsubscribers on my list but never go through all of them to see exactly who unsubed.

Same thing happened to me today, but I finally unsubscribed from someone's list as they were sending me the same link everyday(salespage) and not giving me any reason why I should stay. Telling me I'm a WUSSY haha...

Maybe I'm different, but someone unsubscibing from my list is no big deal. There are folks on this forum who have unsubscribed from mine, and I still consider them as friends.

Anyone who gets his knickers in a knot about an unsubscribe from his list (or her list - Do women wear knickers?) needs to start working on developing a harder skin. An unsubscribe is not personal.

I know that people might end up on multiple lists of mine, and I don't think anything ill of anyone unsubbing one of my lists, because chances are good that they are on another list of mine.

    Hi all,
Let's face it, some of these marketers have thousands on their lists. To follow up on every unsubscriber would simply not be worth their time. Much more effective to work on getting more subscribers. It's a shame though. I'd love to think that if I unsubscribe from someone's list, that they would miss me! Guess that could be possible with beginner marketers, or people with small lists. The smaller a list, the more valuable each subscriber is. But, as the general aim is to grow a list, it would eventually become too difficult to follow up on each unsubscriber.
    Leila.

Do those marketers have time to check who unsubscribed?

    AND worry about?

I even don't find time to unsubscribe the emails I get.

Think I have to get a VA, "my personal unsubscriber".

    G.

P.S. really wouldn't think too much about it.

I think I understand what you mean. However, personally I was at a point lately where I was simply getting too many messages per day and I unsubscribed from many lists as a result.

This being I don't expect every marketer to see exactly who has unsubscribed.

I have my lists separated really well and I always check the unsubs for my two lists that are the closest to me. If you were someone on one of those lists I would definitely appreciate something written explaining why.

For regular ol' subscribers of paid products or free reports I wouldn't care but for anyone on my exclusive lists I would be upset for sure.

that you even care about the feelings of the list-owner speaks volumes, Brian.

I don't like to appear rude either, but if your inbox is anything like mine, you get a ton of email and you have to draw the line somewhere.

Well I must be unique because I'm usually smiling with rage by the time I hit the unsubscribe button. Thoughts like "if you actually had any clue how to write, and make sense in your newsletters, focus on PEOPLE, and NOT come off like such a snake... maybe I'd feel bad". Problem is I NEVER feel bad. I feel relieved everytime I hit that button.

The fact that some people actually feel bad, makes me consider that much more that I need to start my own newsletter. =]

Too little time for emotions in marketing, if you're not getting what you want, you sure as hell better unsubscribe and do it fast imo.

Doesn't bother me. A good list owner knows an unsubscribe can be for many reasons - changing focus or becoming more advanced can be reasons as well as "too many emails to read".

If someone is offended because I unsubscribe...probably not someone I want to listen to, anyway.:p

If I want to leave a list where I'm double subscribed - I always have to unsubscribe twice.

Want to know the best part...

On Aweber it says in one of their FAQs that if you send out an email and you have someone on multiple lists, it will only send them one email. Guess what? It sends them multiple ones... Which sucks... cause I used to have people unsub and say they were on a couple of my lists. But they unsub form the one that I wished they wouldn't have lol.

I am now on GR... so not sure how it will go on there. Hopefully if someone is on multiple lists there, it will only send them one copy.

But if you put a note in there Brian that says you were on multiple lists of theirs... I am sure they will understand. The notes come through in the unsub notification.

I actually have an unsub folder setup in my email client so that I can review what the unsub reasons were.
