Good Grief- I have 62 Tabs Open in My Browser... Does Anyone Offer a 12 Step Ebook for This??

Yep... 62 tabs. and yes, I had to open a new tab to make this post.

I'm always seeing threads that look like they contain nuggets of wisdom, but I want to save them for later because I'm on the Quest of the Day(tm) and I'm trying to gather information on subjects I'm interested in, but each new field seems to lead to 3 new pieces of software I need to learn, and 8 sites I have to sign up for.
There doesn't seem to be a centralized FAQ section AFAIKT. It would be nice to have some sort of base of knowledge to work from - even to explain acronyms and SEO terms- like WTH is an ERD??
I seem to have trouble sifting through all the info here and sorting the signal from the background noise.

Quite possibly! But I would have to join him.

I have lots of tabs open too, and I get ribbed for it sometimes.

I'll tell you what you could do, though. And it'll take away a few of those tabs for awhile, so when you open the browser it won't melt trying to open all of them...

I like instapaper, which you can go to here: Instapaper: Save interesting web pages for reading later

It saves your web pages for you to view later, in case you really don't want to bookmark them, but would like to keep the page handy without keeping all those tabs open. Instapaper keeps a running tally of the web pages you want to keep until you want to delete them.

On the other hand, I suppose I could throw together that 12 step ebook and stick it up as a WSO...

LOL - your thread title gave me a good laugh!

Your behavior is not all that unusual, especially if you are new to this. So, first, step away from your computer for a few minutes and take several deep breaths!

Seriously, though, here are some suggestions:

Keep a file or list of all the sites, software, etc. that interest you and that you think might be useful at some point - once it's added to the list CLOSE the browser window for that site! But don't pursue anything on that list for now. This is just so you know that you have them written down somewhere so you can put them aside for now.

Choose something that you want to learn that really interests you (e.g. affiliate marketing, offline marketing, list building, product creation, etc.). Focus on that and only that. Sometimes it can be very helpful finding a good step-by-step guide on the topic and following a system that others have already been using successfully. Granted, if you're not careful you'll end up chasing every shiny object while looking for the guide, so use caution here...!

It's incredibly easy to get caught up in information overload and shiny object syndrome - and both can keep you stuck so you never make any progress.

Remember, you don't need to know everything before you start taking action. You'll make mistakes - that's okay. That's how you learn. But trying to have it all figured out beforehand - well, that's an endeavor in futility!

Oh, and cut down on the caffeine!

I stopped in the teens. I admire your persistence.

Use bookmarks. Put your bookmarks in groups.

Use more than one browser. F'rinstance I keep all my news sites in one browser. All my sitebuilding tools in another browser. You can run more than one browser at a time. Alternately, run one browser when you want the sites in that browser; kill the browser when you're finished with those sites. etc.

Or develop a better memory (human memory, that is).

use FireFox Tab Groups Manager. it allows you to put your tabs into groups. It also allows you to "suspend" those groups, meaning it remembers everything about them but it isn't trying to store them in memory - I bet with 62 tabs open, you are taking a performance hit.

ERD - entity relationship diagram. You might have seen this in the context of mapping out a database, with tables and fields.

unless you mean EMD - exact match domain.

    Let's see...

Step 1. We admitted we were powerless over our computer's browser, and our lives had become unmanagable.

Step 2. Came to believe a power greater than Google could restore us to sanity.

    Step 3...

Oh wait a minute, I accidently closed that tab. Now I've gotta' go look them up again.

Good heavens, you had 57 tabs at once on your laptop! I think my screen would melt.

You need to go cold turkey. Just hit the "x", close out the whole thing, and don't do it again.

I just let the occasional browser crash clean me up by force when it gets out of hand.

I would guess that if you have 60 new tabs with interesting information opened daily, it may not be as easy to apply all of this information within a week period (due to the fact that you are continuously finding a lot of new information). Unless you act on this information, it may not be helpful.

There is a google chrome extension I have used in the past. The extension saves somewhat the pages so that they can be viewed offline. In general, I don't think that I went back to check the majority of the pages I have saved. But, it could permit to close down some of the pages opened (thinking that you could get back to them after).

If you're talking about WF threads, you can print them out.

Surely your browser would crash with 62 tabs. Good luck getting through them all.

Whenever I've had a heap of tabs open and I accidentally closed my browser, I didn't bother reloading them when I opened it and to be honest, I didn't miss them. Makes me wonder why I kept them open in the first place.

I snorted a little coffee out of my nose when I read your title...

I used to tease a co-worker about how many tabs she would have open on a regular basis and now I find myself doing the same. I like to keep "tabs" (Get it, get it? Oh geez...) on the things that I'm doing, working on, etc...but I find myself more efficient when I buckle down and focus on one project at a time.

.A while ago a friend phoned me. He's a retired mechanic and he had watched a video on YouTube about an engine overheating and exploding. He told me that everytime he turned on his computer it made the sound of the engine exploding even though it was weeks since he watched the video.

I went round and he showed me. He was using Firefox - which was set to open up all his tabs each time he started it. He had literally 100s of tabs open - one of which was the video of the engine exploding.

I closed all the tabs and set Firefox to start using only its home page. He had no idea about tabs and no idea that they were all opening each time!

PS- I have just 6 tabs open at the moment.

Hi Blame It On The Caffeine,

If I'm not mistaken I have never had more than 10-12 tabs open at once. I like to be focused on that I'm working on..

Assuming you feel yourself lost I'd say please DO NOT COMPLICATE THINGS because you will not move forward. I do use to say that to my students who complain on information dumping.

I recommend them do not see the Whole they stumbled upon. Rather they need to follow the threads of progress. How? They need to follow each one by one until that threads meet and become interweaved with one another thread, then with another and so on.

And if the fabric of the system still will not clear enough to them, then I'm wrong and they are not.

All in all: ONE THING at a time please.

      All the best,

      Sandor

      PS: your nick is funny.
