Syndication: Original content format

OK, quick question. If I want to syndicate some content, what format should I have it in on my site?

Are PDF's ok? Will Google crawl these, or does it need to be posted to the site itself?

Cheers

I'm confused. If you want to syndicate content, why would you want to make it available as a PDF? Or are you looking to get people to share a PDF report?

This is not really 'syndication'. What you want to do is offer your PDF with "giveaway rights" - the license to distribute the pdf file unchanged without having to pay royalties.

If you really are looking to get content republished, such as articles in ezines, you want to make using that content as simple and easy as possible. I use plain text for the most part, and I'm beginning to offer versions with light html formatting for pasting into websites and html emails.

I agree with John. Text or lightly formatted html is best if you are going to display it on your site and encourage others to share it. A PDF can be shared as well such as a free report that can be given away as long as it is not altered. It just really depends on how you plan to syndicate.

Aye, I know what you mean, and my post was jumbled and made in a hurry without a clear scope.

I've decided that the content in the pdf's will not be syndicated at all - I think that's easier. I will have other means for that. I just didn't want to put some really good articles up that were not going to be syndicated. But I'm happy with them simply as samples.
