I'll help you if you help me - Design services

Hi guys,

This got put in test forum for some reason. Maybe becuase my old sig had an aff link in it? I have removed since but if I'm breaking any other rules, please let me know!

I'm new to WF but have been lurking for a while reading some great stuff!

I have to commend this community, everyone is helpful and kind - keep it up!

I have a few questions. I have lots and lots of ideas up in that head of mine and not sure where to start! I'm a lead graphic designer by profession and would like to use these skills to offer graphic design and web design services here on WF.

In your eyes, what makes a good designer, and how can I give you the best service possible? What services would you like to see offered? I know you will probably think, well, that's easy - quality unique designs, fast turnaround and competitive prices. Well there is a lot of stiff competition out there and I want to be the BEST!

I am in the process of setting up a portfolio as I know people like to see examples of previous work. To this end, I'd like to offer the first 5 people to respond with helpful answers to the above a free custom designed logo. This will help with the above and add to my portfolio!

One of my pet hates is clipart, it drives me mad to see so many so called designers selling non-custom work! All of my work will be custom to the client's requirements.

I'll help you if you help me!

I look forward to offering my services here very soon!

Thanks in advance,

Louis

    Hey Louis

    Well aboard brother !

Great stuff for putting yourself out there in front of everyone here

For me as you have stated the number 1 thing is quality of work, its ok saying you can turn a job round in 12 hours but if its poor then who cares !

Its always nice to get unique graphic work that no-one will find elsewhere

I think a designer needs to offer packages to suit all budgets, for example - ebook cover / ebook cover with cd cover + card graphics / full minisite etc...

you see what I mean, just make yourself available to people with all amounts of money to spend..

    BUT

Do not sell yourself short bro ! If you are top quality then you need to assert your authority and your prices should reflect although as you have recognised you need to get some work done first to prove yourself

    Hope that helps

    Louis,
A good designer stands out from the rest in my opinion. They each have their own style and of course you already know that.
I would suggest doing a search here on the forum in the WSO section and the Classifieds section for terms like "graphics, design, logo, header, etc." and see what others have done here. There are some here who are excellent in their skills.

This will give you an idea of what to shoot for and how much is being charged for their services. If you use the sections mentioned, then I can see you making a fair amount of money here alone.

Yes Louis, a portfolio is essential here to see the quality of work and get a feel for your style.
I personally like someone who can take just a name, idea or general description of what I need and just run with it. I like em to do their own thing and see what happens. Others like designers to follow instructions exactly.
I hope that helps you out a little,
    Glenn

I think in this forum you can have success with mini-sites templates, landing pages templates and book covers.
Also professional WordPress themes can do well.

You probably should have some basic packages, available to every pocket, like Dean explained above, then some customizing options, for example basic mini site with custom header and logo, niche customized mini site and so on.

Hope this can give you some ideas.

Louis, quality is more important than price to me. I have had some work done that wasn't worth a damn but some that were, even from the same person. I would rather pay a little more and get quality work. I waited about two weeks on one and it was something I could have done myself...very poor quality. On the other hand, the same person did a job for me and had it done within 24 hours and it was great!

So, be consistent (sp) and do a good job each time and the business will come your way!

      Welcome to the forum!

I like to see originality in a designer I hire. Originality in the way his/her designs are created. The ability to take what's in my head and put it on paper is an important skill too, so communication is a must. I've had designers I've said "ok I would like this and this and that" and they come back with something completely different. It is frustrating to no end.

Think like a business person and a potential customer all in one. What would make a customer purchase this product, or what feelings would the design envoke. If you can do that, you will be very successful my friend.

Thanks so much guys. You have been a great help!

Please PM me if you would like to take me up on my offer of a free logo (or other small design job for that matter). Like I said, I do this for my day job and have a passion for design so hope to bring a quality service to WF.

Thanks again. any further comments not mentioned above are welcome. I'll probably have other questions about other ventures too soon, got a lot of ideas whizzing around at the moment!
