Product 1st, Sales copy 2nd ... or vice versa?

Hi Warriors,

For those who own their own products (IM or otherwise), do most of you create the product first before working on your sales copy? What about those who do it the other way round first?

And why ... ?

Love to hear what you guys say about this.

P.S. My personal take would be sales copy first followed by product creation. Rationale? By first creating the sales copy, you better understand the needs of your target prospect and can better design the product.

Market research (finding the problem) --> product creation (creating the solution) --> sales copy ("Hey! Over here! I have the solution!").

But to be honest I've never tried it any other way.

How are you going to write sales copy without knowing exactly what will be in your product?

      Ideas change, things are implemented...

Always finish the product 100% before starting promotion, otherwise you're putting unnessecary pressure on yourself to finish, and you'll end up rushing it and not doing as good of a job as you'd hoped... Which then dampens future plans.

You make it right, and obviously your audience appreciate it. The market research is the first step because you need to know whether your intended product will be sellable or not. If the research shows that there is a demand for it then you can start to develop your product. Otherwise you will waste your time only.

It doesn't really Matter. As long as you've researched the needs of the market, you should have no problem creating a product, then writing a benefit rich sales letter about your creation. Plus I find the sales letter writing gets me psyched up to launch the product!

I usually do at least a rough draft of a sales letter first. That lets me really focus on the target market and the benefits that will speak to them.

Only after that do I start on the first draft of the product and then the sales letter and product are worked on at the same time.

At the end, I'm fairly certain that I've kept focused on what will speak to my audience.

So - to answer your question - the two usually go hand in hand for me.
