You Are Failing as an Amazon Affiliate Because...

There are lots of reasons one can fail as an Amazon (or CJ, Linkshare, ShareASale, etc) affiliate. However, some reasons are more obvious than others.

Listed below are some of the more major reasons I've seen for folks failing at affiliate marketing (especially Amazon).

You are targeting products that you can't possibly rank for...

So you want to earn monster commissions in the HDTV niche eh? Well, so does everyone else. If you rely on organic search for traffic, stop promoting "Best Sellers" and popular items. Everyone and their grandmom is doing this. Unless you can rank above the fold on page one in Google, your product reviews just aren't going to be seen. Instead, go after the less-competitive products in the same niche.

You are spending more time worrying about backlinks and less time creating content...

If you need to spend 5 hours per day building backlinks just to rank your product reviews, you are really making life difficult for yourself. There is so much low-hanging fruit to chase that I never understood why people chase generic, high-traffic / high-competition terms that require such effort to rank for. Target lower-competition stuff and spend more time writing content for your site and less time trying to rank. You will have far fewer grey hairs and results will be realized more quickly.

You are not targeting "buying" phrases...

Sure, the term "HDTVs" will get you a TON of traffic (if you can even rank for it). However, how many people who are searching for that term are going to actually buy anything anytime soon? I'll answer for you - not many. Stop targeting "traffic" and start targeting "buying" traffic. Think about what terms you would search for when researching something you were ready to purchase. Those are the terms you should be targeting.

Your content is not compelling...

If I am searching for information about a product I am ready to buy and I land on your site and I'm immediately greeted with a wall of text, I'm clicking my "back" button. For Pete's sake, break it up! Add some images! Add some paragraphs! A wall of 800 words just isn't appealing to me. By the same token, please don't tell me 4-slice toasters are great or that I can toast more slices of bread faster. Stop with the mundane details. Give me something useful.

Oh, and PLEASE don't just repeat what Amazon is saying. Chances are VERY GOOD that I've ALREADY been to the product page on Amazon. I already know what they are saying about it. At least give me YOUR opinion on what Amazon/others are saying about the product. Simply parroting what Amazon already said is not helpful to me.

You are promoting things that people simply do not buy online...

I realize that "anything" can be bought online. That said, some things just aren't as conducive to online shopping as other things. Some things are simply too expensive for many to trust buying online. Some stuff requires the buyer to try it on. Some stuff is just cheaper at a brick and mortar. Think about what you are trying to promote and ask yourself if people really buy it online.

You are promoting things that you know nothing about...

I just thought of this one. Please folks, know something about what you are promoting. If you know nothing about HDTVs, either learn about them first or simply do not promote them. It becomes painfully clear in your wording when you have no idea what you are talking about. Your visitors can tell.

I'm sure there are others and I'll add them as I think of them. That said, address the few mentioned above and you will give yourself a much better chance of success.

    This is a great post!
Do most of your amazon affiliate products have a review? Do you think that a review is essential for sales in affiliate marketing?

My sites are almost 100% exclusively product reviews. The strategy works for me.

I gave you a thanks, because you really made some good points. I believe a lot in "content is king".

I found that adding value to your blog posts or articles is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Writing content really gets the traffic, you need to provide the reader with an answer, and something that will solve their problem.

Thank you for sharing this information with us!

Thanks Wolf for your nice tips. I think if anyone select the best product on according to his abilities then it would be easy to sell a lot of product from affiliate marketing.Although everybody are trying to sell their product but not trying to sell the product benefits and thats reason to get fall behind in affiliate marketing.

You hit right on the spot. My problems are I can't get enough targeted traffic, or "buyer" traffic I should say, and I can't write quality reviews for these products. Whenever I try writing a review, my brain would just freeze.

Thanks for the sample site. I like the site and always enjoy seeing how others format content and sites. Much appreciated!

How many reviews do you complete on an average day?
Do you keep your sites small (5 to 25 posts) or build them out?

With that back-end review system, I can easily do upwards of 10 reviews per day. However, I usually do one or two reviews per day. As you can see from that demo site, creating reviews is really simple. My sites are generally 50-100 products big.

wolfmmiii you make very valid points. I have a cousin who fits under every category that you listed above. He's convinced that an internet business is not the way to go. Do you still target backlinks for your niche sites? Or do you only/mainly focus on content?

        Hi:

Well, do you have a website building service. I want to get into amazon marketing, but I cant afford to make lot of trial and errors and waste time. I also dont have the time to go through courses. I am just looking at a way of generating passive income. I know there are plenty of services here on WF, but many are not good or trustworthy. Since you are a seasoned amazon marketer, it would be better if you can build me. let me know if you do and I will place my first order right away.

          Hi macmani....

It's not something I'm doing right now. However, I am planning on offering either a) a service to build sites based on my strategies or b) just flat-out selling sites. For now, though, I am just offering my info products.

      Thanks Debbie...

I'm glad you found it helpful. I think people sometimes get caught up in arguing if you can/can't rank when just scraping Amazon content when, in reality, what they should be thinking about is how that content converts knowing the visitor has probably already been to Amazon.

By adding your own spin, you bring significant value to the visitor - value he was looking for.

Yep... I learned that one the hard way when I had a site ranked no 1 in google for women's bags.

I got a couple of thousand targeted visitors a month and never made a single sale!

Thanks for the very useful post. My Amazon experience has mainly been in promoting their number one product which of course has VERY high competition, even though I selected keywords with lower competition. I know this niche is saturated. Going forward I will keep you advice in mind and i expect that my results will be better.

My two favorites from the list. Thanks for posting this up. Especially the last one. I always hate landing on a "Amazon Review" site when I am doing product purchase research for a buying decision and can tell since I know what I am seeing that there is either a $3 article or a spun article telling me nothing that I didn't already know and the often reads like gibberish. I am clicking back in this case, not through to Amazon where I have already been.

Since I stay away from high-competition products, earning with Amazon comes very easily actually. You'd be surprised at how easy it can be if you just worry about content and less about backlinks. For me, an hour or two per day is all I need to maintain my Amazon sites, which are VERY profitable.

I was doing some product searching today and always search for other review websites (as if I was a buyer of the prouduct). The first thing I ask myself is when looking at competition review websites: "would i even read this website if I were buying this product?'

I put the same principle in practice when I design my review - ie is my content better than someone elses? Does it feel like the guy reviewed knows what he is saying? Sometimes ask yourself, did you provide an opinion for the buyer to make a decision on? A negative review still may generate a sale believe it or not. If my review looks and sounds like everyone elses or worse yet it looks like some of those really bad websites, then I can expect no sales.

Im a super Newb here, but it hasnt taken me long to sniff out the good from the bad. Really there are some garbage websites out there; not anything against EMDs, but IMO most of them look like spam really

I don't worry about word count per se. However, I use my own WordPress plugin (data-entry system) to create my reviews. The resulting reviews are typically 300-500 words long. They are typically overview-type reporting-style reviews.

Since I target products that other people are not, I can usually rank on page one within a day or so without any kind of manual backlinking activities.

You are failing with Amazon cause you go after too broad keywords. If you don't know what keywords then you should buy wolfmmiii's guide, I also bought it just because I was curious and that strategy definitely works, I haven't tried it cause I'm to busy but common sense tells you that it works.

That's a problem with Blogger, the spam detection isn't accurate. However, you can appeal if your blog has been wrongly detected as spam. I think you only have about 7 days to do it from the time which the blog was deleted.

Were you using only entirely original content on the blog?

Were you using any keywords multiple times? Just wondering what could have triggered the filter to look spammy in anyway.

I also made another mistake from your last point: "You are promoting things that you know nothing about..." I built 3 website with totally different niche that I don't really understand about and of couse, I can't make great content from things I don't know anything about. Content is really a king!

I love this: You are not targeting "buying" phrases

After training salesman for years in face to face sales it was amazing to me how many people didn't know the words people to indicate they are ready to buy.

In affiliate marketing I see this more than ever. There is no doubt people target search words and give people the information they need without targeting the buying words people use when they are already sold.

      This is a great post!

I think people fail on Amazon because they don't get ranked for the products they are promoting

A great way is to use Youtube to make quick power point videos talking about the product...and get that video ranked. Much easier than a website

Be sure to link to a blogger blog or your own website as Youtube doesnt like you to link directly to Amazon.

All you need to do is put an image of the product on a blogger blog and say something like "Click here for the best deals we've found on Product name"

And put a few benefits or features of the product below for a little text

      I hope this helps

I agree with everything you are saying and have made decent money myself from targeting low competition products on Amazon...

One thing I would say is that people are too quick to dismiss their own chances of ranking just because it is Amazon. Yes they are huge but so what...get your game face on and give it a try!

Create an Adwords campaign to put yourself ahead of Amazon to see if the juice is going to be worth thee squeeze and then hustle.

I outrank Amazon for lots of their own listings simply though better On-page SEO and unique content so never get put off by their presence in the SERPs...it's just another challenge!

Great post though...a lot of people will benefit from this (your post, not so much mine

As you can see, the original post was made almost a year ago, yet, the concepts remain valid.

I am failing because forum moderate banned me from spamming affiliate links.
