Using a Blog to Build List?

I have a personal development blog, but the list I want to build is in the IM niche. Would I be able to have an opt-in on the blog for say: "Want to start making money online? Join are newsletter to learn how. _________" (just an example off the top of my head)

Would this work? IM falls under personal development, but would this be worth doing since personal development is such a broad term.

Opinions please, thanks.

This could work, although it may not be as successful as it would be by using it on an IM niche blog.

Although it may allow you to gain optins from people who wouldn't normally read a blog within the IM niche.

You might be best giving away a freebie, maybe a report of some kind.

I don't see how IM falls under Personal Development. IM falls under Entrepreneurship, Online Business, etc, but Personal Development?!?! I don't see it.

You need to narrow down your mailing lists to make them effective.

I had the same dilemma when I started my blog and IM in general. I ended up sticking with just IM. I DO think you can incorporate the two but you're going to have to get real specific within that niche and whom you target.

Consider incorporating PD within Internet marketing and how your audience can use PD to help them succeed I think many successful IM'ers study PD in order to be successful and maintain a positive mindset, but I'm not sure if they're spending money on PD products per se. That will require a little research..

      Good luck!

You might get optins, but they obviously will not be targeted leads...

So would I be better of starting an IM blog if I am wanting to get targeted leads?

I figure if I do I could still use the other blog to get leads and possibly keep a close connection between the 2 blogs since people that are interested in themselves could easily be interested in IM.

If your main goal is to build a list with targeted list, why do you choose a blog over a standard squeeze page?

I was planning on using both.

If you wish to build a list in IM then have a blog all about IM, position yourself within that niche as an authority.

Personal development is a completely different niche, choose 1 niche and stick with it. If you do decide to have a blog in personal development and try to build a list for the IM niche your customer wont be as targeted. And the customers might not even care about making money online.

Only reason I wanted to know about the effectiveness of a personal development blog is because I already have one (wasn't my intent to use it for anything besides helping others). You are probably right though, it would be much more effective to just use an IM blog.

you should give it a go, you wil soon know whether it will work for you and if not just set up a lead capture page for I.M with a new site.

The idea of building wealth isn't that remote to personal development, whether it'll work or not, you'll learn that only after testing.. However, something as straight forward as "How to Make Money Online" might not cut it.

You'll need something that integrates both personal development and IM together, something like "Unusual Ways to Enhance Your Writing Skills and Make $8,367 Per Week, Starting Today!" (just an example)

That wasn't going to be my sales pitch, was just throwing something out there. But I agree, keeping close to the niche ideals would be best.

    Hi

Do you build a list with your personal development blog?

It would be better to do your own "list swap" by pointing members of your PD list to the IM opt-in. Then those who are interested would be more targeted.

Personal Development is a broad niche and you haven't told us your angle. The quote you used seemed to indicate more a personal development in business niche than personal development in general.

For many people, the goal of personal development is not "start my own business and make more money".

You want those who have more materialistic PD goals on your IM list.

The blog is definitely more focused on inner development, that is why I was unsure how well visitors would opt-in to the mailing list.

    It could work...

I you see JonathanBudd.com, it's a blog where he talks about personal development, spiritualism and stuff like that, but he offers a freebie on IM.

    So just test!

You still can drive FAST targeted traffic to your list with a Squeeze Page through Facebook Ads or Solo Ads.

And if none of these 2 ways work for your (which I doubt it), you can start a blog on IM and have the opt-in there

I wouldn't waste my time doing that. You need targeted traffic for that. Build an IM blog and put in the necessary list gathering software or plugin and start driving traffic.

Sorry for the shameless plug, but you might want to check out my WSO in my signature. It has some very good reviews, so I am sure you will like it. And it is cheap.

Building another blog from scratch that generates traffic isn't exactly the quickest or easiest way to success (especially in IM), so if you already have a blog in what I would call a semi-related field, then why not test it & see what happens?

By the way...the two are definitely related...contrary to what others may say. The types of people that generally seek personal development tend to be the types that also have an entrepreneurial spirit...I know that is a stereotype, and isn't always true, but if you have a built in traffic source that is semi-targeted I would give it a go!

I think it will be hard to get it going unless your blog has huge traffic... These two niches are quite different and if the traffic is less, there is very little chance that you will get good conversions. Why don't you try using the warriorforum or solo ads to build your list if you really want to get into IM? All you need is a good squeeze page and a free offer to start with

  • From my experience is always better to promote a list on the blog who talks about same niche. Otherwise you will register a lowest conversion ever.

you may get some opt ins, unless you test it you can`t ever be 100% sure

one thing i will say though is your opt in conversions won`t be very good from just using a sidebar opt in box and pop ups

you may get some subscribers but you will be losing out on a lot of opt ins

i always link my main squeeze page from my blog, because my main squeeze page converts way way higher than anything on my blog

i also use a subscribe form instead of an opt in form on my blog now because it`s important to build a following who are really engaged in your content and blog

then once you build a good following you can then leverage that to build your list
