Wordpress is great for newbies...it's what I used to build my first site...where did you look for themes at?

That is what I have always heard too, so I would really like to start with wordpress! I have looked through the themes in the wordpress theme gallery, as well as googled different keywords for wordpress themes.

I second wordpress... It takes a bit of learning, but fairly simple to understand. There are thousands of plugins and themes to choose from... It like the Honda Civic/iPhone of website platforms

The best advice I can give you is to make a decision and get started. Pick a system, decide on a theme and do it. Make a deadline for deciding and stick to it.

Themes can always be changed later but nothing will ever happen (no sales, no traffic, no commission, etc.) until you have the site up. Get it up and then fix it as you go along. Most of us have changed themes, plugins and even entire systems (Wordpress versus Joomla for example) many times over our careers. Just get started.

I would definitely go with Wordpress.

It's so easy to update and there are so many possibilities for customizing. If you're having trouble getting the site to look like you want here's what you can do.

Get a good framework theme like Thesis and then go hire someone to create the site that you want.

Elance, Scriptlance, 99Designs are great places to hire great talent.

A theme that I liked was called aggregate....I used it for a local events website if you want to see an example u can visit the site...I haven't done much with it lately because I've been working on other things but just for an idea of what you could have yours look like. there is a lot you can do with Wordpress...that's why I like it so much

Hi... I recommend Wordpress like the other warriors. Other platforms like Drupal and Joomla are far more difficult to costumize.

I use paid theme Thesis for all my websites now. (PM me if you want to see an example)

Wordpress is the way to go for your first site. It's the easiest to work with and offers the best versatility. You just need to find a nice clean theme and install it. Analysis paralysis will hinder you the most. It doesn't have to be perfect the first time. Take action and start finishing out your pages. Google and this forum are your friend for finding information to complete some of the tasks involved.

You keep going through all the same exact problems I had and there is a very simple way around this "theme browsing ocd".

I spilled water on my keyboard however and am "click typing" right now but soon as I get a new keyboard ill pm you. You're missing some fundamental things about wordpress like how EDITABLE the themes are. The design I chose for one of my sites looks NOTHING LIKE THE ORIGINAL THEME (ill show you later a before and after of one of my sites).

You just need a coding lesson or 2 on skype/aim.

Will get in touch later and STOP STRESSING. Wordpress does farrrr more than you likely realize!

Wordpress is a no brainer for beginners. I would advise to play around with a prebuilt static css html site template and begin teaching yourself how to manipulate the coding. W3Schools is a good place to start learning.

If you're just having trouble finding an appropriate header, stop searching for a needle in a haystack and create your own. Just right click on the header image and save it so you know what dimensions you;re working with. Then put something to together or pay someone to do, then just name the new file the same and upload/replace the preexisting one.

Some good advice from the guys and definitely WordPress is the way to go if you are building a website, however...
You don't make it 100% clear what you are setting out to achieve?
You can waste a LOT of time if you don't have a clear objective in mind.
So, my first question would be - what are you setting out to achieve exactly?
Are you looking to make money, do you just want to blog for enjoyment...:confused:

Okay, that being the case my advice would be don't concentrate on a website as first priority. Think rather about how you are going to build a list.
You NEED a list of prospects and customers to make money online. Too many people (myself included initially) get hung up on the technical aspects and forget the marketing aspects of making money online.
I am not saying you will not want to build websites - you will, but you don't make money by building websites you make money by helping people who will in turn buy your products (or affiliate products).
You sound to be at the exact stage that you should really get a CLEAR picture (write it down) of what you intend to do to make money online.

I can sympathise with your problem, but think that the best advice that I can give you right now is to get something online.

You need to test your concept before investing a lot of money into it... I know this guy who spent his life savings getting a website built but it never really worked because his basic concept didn't work in the first place.
In my humble opinion, wordpress is the best option for beginners if you really can't find a free wordpress theme that will work for your niche you may want to try a premium theme I believe the price for premium themes starts around $10 and can go up to as much as $100.

if all else fails you can get a programmer to create you a custom wordpress theme. Off the top of my head I don't know how much this will cost but would imagine your could find someone on a free lancing site like rent-a-coder to do the job fairly cheaply.

Choose a theme from the WordPress free theme repository to get started.

You can change themes a little easier now with the new "Live Preview" feature.

If you want a lot of customize features look at the Suffusion theme. Not much to look at out of the box but it is very flexible with free support.

It mainly depends on where you're headed - in, say, five years. Is this going to a "sausage factory" or one-and-done? Don't get bogged down with the technical aspects - every bit of that is just too easy and affordable to outsource.

You do sacrifice a little flexibility going with WP over HTML/CSS templates, but WP is really a snap to learn and maintain, while HTML and CSS can drive you batty while you're trying to learn all the neat tricks AND get your website up before this time next year.

The main choices you should look for in a WP theme as a starting point are whether it's two-column or three (or four), graphics ready or not, and whether you can embed (Flash) video. After that, you can customize it to your heart's content with minimum learning curve/trial and error.

WordPress. All day long. It's just so user friendly, I bet you can do what you want with it. There are so many themes and plugins available....... I have sites running with WordPress and some that are not, the sites that are not I am currently reviewing about transferring them over.

Definitely Wordpress - however make sure you don't pick a too complex theme.

Flexibility 3 is a great free theme that you can customize easily, and upgrade later if you need to.

My advice is to get something up as quick as you can, and wordpress is good for this - then tweak it afterwards. Start here Getting Started with WordPress « WordPress Codex and get going.

Definitely go with WordPress. But my question to you is: what is the special feature that you are looking for that you can't seem to find in any theme? Based one your (albeit) brief description, I would think that most themes should be able to do the job for you (certainly for version 1.0)

Wordpress is the best option to me.
I find you are looking for a combination of Blog and webpages.
Some good themes are Flex, Thesis, etc.
But for WP customization you need to have some idea of coding.
If you are not ready to spend that time to learn, its better to hire some professional.
