Help: Driving traffic to a not-for-profit forum

I'm a member of a forum that doesn't get a lot of traffic and I'd like to remedy that if possible (if anything because it's a neat little community). I need some advice though.

The forum has nothing to do with IM or making money and I don't stand to gain anything by helping them other than seeing the community grow.

It's being hosted by one of these free forum hosting sites called Invisionfree, so I'm not sure what I can do to help promote it. I mean, it has an obscure sub domain name and isn't even listed in Google.

What are the best ways to drive targeted traffic? I've never tried optimizing a site like that before. Are there any really solid methods of achieving this that are free? I need to use the money I have on more important things but I'd be happy to spend a small amount ($50) if it helped.

I don't want to mention the name or link it but it's not a charity or anything distasteful.

Without some inkling of what the forum is about you likely wont get many constructive answers. Driving traffic is all very well but unless it's targeted traffic they won't stay long, resulting in far fewer member conversions.

With the utmost respect (honestly, no offense intended here), you shouldn't need to see a site in order to provide a few suggestions on ways to help promote it. I could understand if I was asking for advice on how to modify the actual site to make it more SEO friendly, but that isn't the case here. I'd just like to hear a few suggestions on what people would do to promote a forum hosted on a free sub domain.

well what your saying is unclear, your title says a not for profit forum, but you then say it is not a charity.

OK not a charity still means you would need to create some traffic so have you tried social media, adding your forum link to your signature ( as suggested / we can not visit it if you do not advertise it ) there are also free forum post swap groups out there that you could do post swaps with, so try a search on that and see how you go.
