What's with IM and Hostgator?

Just curious as to why so many are pushing / using Hostgator. I took a look at their plans and they don't seem all the rave. I am just wondering why you use it.

What plan do you use, and how many sites you are hosting with them?

I currently have about 20 sites and am looking for a new host. I am trying justify the move.

    I can't speak for anyone else but I use them because they work and because they are very competitively priced.

    It's like the old saying goes, if it ain't bust...

    I have been using them for over 5+ years now and have never had an issue.

    I have a shared plan with around 20-30 sites running on it and also a dedicated server.

    I also like their 24 hour live chat. It has saved my backside a quite a few times. I am one of those people who like to be able to sort out an issue right away without having to wait. That's one of the big advantages for me in using Hostgator.

    What do you mean you don't see the rave? Unlimited Space, Domains and Bandwith for less than $10 a month pre discounts? That sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me!

    I use them because they are fast, cheap and have excellent customer service in my experience.

    Money goes to money. They are popular which makes them popular with those starting out and looking for a host as it seems that everyone's hosting there.

    The unlimited part is of course not true but most people aren't affected by that.

    Overselling hosts basically run a bet against their customers. The customer may think they might use 5000 GB but hostgator knows that those big plans usually don't materialize and the average customer ends up using 10 GB or so.

    That being said hostgator appears to handle the overselling pretty well.

      Beyond the price, the fact that they have rock solid service and very good support is a consideration for me.

      Are they "the best?" I don't know but they definitely are "top tier" in my book.

    I agree with everyone ..... pricing is good .....customer service is excellent . I've had issues before and they responded quite fast. I'm impressed considering the hundreds of thousands of customers they have and probably millions of websites they host.

    Best customer service I have ever experienced with hosting. Pricing is competitive, too.

    At one point I had a dedicated server with them (for a project I work on with a partner). We were pulling about 20,000-30,000 people a day to the site (at the time). Out of the blue, HG tech support called my cell phone just to make sure everything was running smoothly and if we needed any help with anything. Class act, if you ask me.

    For some reason or another, I thought it was the attractive affiliate package they were offering.

    I spoke with other web hosts and they were willing to match prices, thus I thought "what's so special?" Most hosts have similar pans but the pricing may be +/- a couple dollars.

    In the search for a new home I think I found a little gem

    I love their customer service, very helpful and willing to figure out any problem you have. I like how I don't have to be stuck with them for a year minimum if I want hosting (I just like thinking I have control for things, ha). And they waived my main domain transfer fee just because they felt like it.

    A+ as far as I'm concerned.

      Service, service, service! I have 20 or so sites hosted with them and have never had one problem and they have saved my back side using "live chat" on some pretty technical issues at 4am! for $10 a month? You can't beat HG with a stick...Chris...a customer for life!

    Like everyone else says, HG works. There is too much other stuff to worry about, hosting shouldn't be one of them. Trouble? Instant live chat. Another thing is the fantastic affiliate program. I can't sell something to my clients that I don't use myself, so it's great to recommend a host that I use and also happens to pay excellent commissions.

      It is the quality of the servers and allotment of the resources. I've been with over 50 hosting companies and I can honestly recommend Hostgators for shared hosting.

      For dedicated hosting, go with Liquidweb.

      I would not use Dreamhost or Bluehost for anything.

        The customer service is great, they got cPanel, the price is right... But my biggest reason is Zero Down Time! In 3 years time I have never been unable to access my websites or control panel (might have gone down while I wasn't lookin )

    They are a great host for accounts that use few resources. That makes HG sufficient for nearly everyone in this corner of the internet. If you are going to build the next YouTube, then of course you'd want to be elsewhere.

    i have server with them and NEVER had a downtime!with other hosting provider for same prices my sites were goning down every 2weeks for 1-2 hours,i cant affort that luxury,no marketer can

    I was thinking of going with a different provider under the "reseller" account. That way I can host all my domains for much cheaper than purchasing hosting packages singly. I have found that the "initial" offer and cheap price for single domains expires upon renewal. For example, to renew 3 domains with my current provider I have to foot the $600 bill. If I go with a reseller account I can get all my domains for under $200.

    Basically, I am reselling to myself

    If I am lucky, I might make a couple sales that will chip away at that amount. I thought this opportunity was too good to pass up, but Hostgator's reseller package seems sub-par. I'm not only thinking of my current existing domains, but those in the wings that I am working on for the future.

    Does this make any sense?

      I will just be reiterating what most have already said.

      Regardless how/what you interpret their "unlimited hosted" to mean,
      IF YOU EVER have a question, punch up a support ticket, and you will have a near immediate response where you can discuss the issues you are having, or might be worried about. One such case I was worried about having too much traffic on a particular site and was worried that the site might slow down or have some sort of disruption from the user end. I was contacted immediately via email and the CSR and I went over best practices, back up plans, and he even told me that if need be we can discuss a dedicated server/solution with regard to my concerns. After he evaluated my overall situation, he told all was good and to not worry about it.

      Hostgator is one of those options where, as long as you pay attention to what you are doing and keep them in the loop when you have issues, you will never have a serious problem. It is one of those times where you feel that your money was well spent.

      Let that be a lesson to all of us who are seeking to grow our businesses, provide a dynamite product with rock solid support and service, and you will have a fast growing business with rave reviews.

      I have used several different hosting companies over the past 9 years, or so.

      Got my reseller account with Hostgator about 2 years ago, and migrated all my domains to that account. Still paying the same $50/month.

      Couldn't be happier. Have only needed support once, and they solved my problem in minutes (literally).

    I've been paying way too much for my VPS and dedicated but a lot of folks I speak to tell me that HostGator is good for reseller accounts and small scale shared hosting. Not for big sites or high traffic sites.

      I use hostgator for many reasons......

      the support is second to none, anytime i need help or not sure about anything the support is great... the live chat very very good, always available 24/7....

      the pricing plan is good aswell from getting started to growing your business.... the bandwidth you can adjust your storage is unlimited....

      Hostgator really do look after their clients well they have been good with me so far ; )

      I agree with the other responses. I have been with them for over 2 years without a problem. Customer service was extremely helpful during my beginning stages from moving from a free hosting service.

      If I hadn't picked Hostgator, I would have went with Godaddy. Heard a lot of not so great things about Godaddy, but I find them just as helpful (bought my domains through them). I hate their sign up process however.

    I actually prefer site5. Site 5 has a cheaper reseller hosting plan, and they have a fantastic affiliate program. I've heard good things about d9 hosting as well. I've always had trouble with hostgators customer service.

    They are not that fast if you ask me, but still reliable and cheap.
    Also, out of the blue they disabled a script that was being accessed (hotlinked) from my other websites (cross server scripting) without even asking me. WTF? It now shows "Forbidden" in the iframe on my other websites where it should have shown a status message. And I can't even see where I can change it back in the cPanel. Probably deleting the old php file and reuploading will work, but it just amazes me that they will disable hotlinking without even asking me. Can I decide about the file premissions myself, please?

    That was what I was alluding to. I think IM's could save a bundle of $$ by going with a reseller account for their niche sites vs paying the low monthly costs for each individual site.

    It is definitely something for those of us who are not pros, but not newbies either to consider.

    By my estimation, a reseller account is about $400 a year with my new host (depending on the package chosen this is middle of the road). If each site is $100 a year to renew I'd save $1600 a year.

    Compare that to the hostgator basic plan at $4 a month: 4x20 = $80 a month x 12 months = $960 a year. That is still $560 in savings. That isn't pocket change.

    I don't think many realize the potential savings if they went with a reseller account.

      If you are just hosting your own sites and not reselling you only need an account that allows addon domains, costs not even as much as a reseller account.

      Don't buy a separate plan for each domain you are hosting. Get a plan that allows unlimited domains. I suspect you don't know this, but unlimited domains means unlimited individual sites. There are plans all over the internet for under $10 a month that will support a hundred domains with their own site on each one.

    I like Hostgator because I have never had any issue with them whatsoever. When I was starting our doing websites, the tech support helped me do a ton of things and I learned a lot by working with them.

    That alone is why I stay with them. They were there for me - still are - so why would I change?

There are many better and cheaper alternatives, but I guess that also depends on whether you've built your own site already or whether you need a prebuilt template. I personally design my own site and host on one.com for far less. They're reliable, 24/7 live help, simple control panel, good all round

      I've been using a HG reseller account for several years now. $25/month ($300/year) along with the reliability and support. Unless they go toes up, I'm going to be hard to switch to someone else.

    Their cPanel and FTP setup is what alot of IM'ers use to build products and services around, and it's easier to just sign up with Hostgator if you want to follow the marketer's software or program perfectly.

    Other than that, i feel the same way. I use a different web hosting provider and they give you incredible website creation tools, unlimited store, and free SSL.

    HG support will work with you if your site has been hacked or have malicious code. Other hosting companies just quarantine your site by moving it to another server without making you aware of any issues. Support is great and FTP is super-fast compared with other companies. But, is also bad to put all your eggs in one basket so I have a couple of hosting plans at Bluehost and HostNine.

      As others have said, superior (and patient) customer service is my number one reason. You never really realize how much you value superior customer service until you deal with a company that doesn't provide it. Okay, maybe it's 1 1/2. Very, very little downtime has to be #1.
