Fired from day job. Time to kick up IM work a lot

by pamon
58 replies
Wow, what a day. Got canned by my employer for what they considered issues with my online time during the day. Note, had a "lot" of downtime and surfed DP and WF posts and replied. They weren't happy and canned me. Their loss in the long run.

Time to kick up the IM and article writing a bunch. Time to specialize to clients who want high quality work as well. I'm more than happy to sell articles and SEO content for decent prices as well. Haven't turned down a client yet who wants content.

Tough day personally, but the grass is greener on the other side. Not looking for sympathy, just saying when one door closes, time to bust open another door.

    Sorry to hear about that.

Are you at a point with your IM where you can support yourself financially from it? If not, there's no shame in seeking out another job in the meantime.

From the tone of your post, it sounds as if your online income can't sustain you. Like you said, kick it up or get a day job to help out.

I would look for another job and not browse the WF or DP during your work hours. The time to quit a day job for IM is when you're making at least what you would make in your job plus have an emergency stash of cash in the savings account. Financially, you can fall apart very quickly without any income.

Completely agree. Keep up steady work until you are making the same as you would and have at least 6 months of income saved.

Agreed. In this economy, if you have a job then work hard at the job and keep it. Do not work on your business on your employer's time. Do your IM at night and on the weekend.

      Amen to that!

Find another job, keep up with the IM. You can do both (separately). Looking for that quick fix dill drain you more than you can imagine. Don't go down that road. Establish a steady income, work on IM and promote your skills. The day will come when you are released from the chains (but some will always be there).

I agree... from my experience you need an income coming in to pay for work to be done etc... it needs to pay the bills and your business... its very very easy to run out of cash quickly .... get a job regular income to pay your bills, and get the Im business to replace your income then quit

Sorry to hear about that. But it is time for new opportunity: the opportunity to be your own boss.

IM will take many hours of work at first, but when you get the hang of it and the income starts pouring in, you will not look back at ANY job (at least for me).

Just a quick reference/something to contemplate - regarding your "got canned for what they considered issues with my online time during the day."

So I'm wondering - as your entrepreneurial IM career advances and you perhaps later take on employees - will you look the other way when they use time YOU are paying them for to troll forums etc.?

Just curious if the roles were reversed, how would you feel?

Regardless, I do wish you well on your journey. Hopefully you'll work harder for yourself than for someone else.

If you dont make enough money online to pay your bills i suggest you get a new job (even temp. or part time) to avoid disapointment.

Try to get a new day job as well indeed. For a couple of reasons. First, there's nothing that feels better than telling your boss "well, I'm afraid I will have to let YOU go, see ya" when you make more online than during your day job.

Second, your "internet marketing" will be better when you're not so hungry for money that you'll try just about anything to make money. It's a state of mind thing and I always suggest my clients start making money on the side first.

    Hi,

first of all, sorry to hear that you lost your job. second, frankly, it is your fault to do work-UNrelated things in your working time. You will have to change this, otherwise, same thing will happen again. last, orange county has lots of marketing agencies, they think they know SEO, but it is not true, which is your opportunities.

    good luck

It's a bummer that you lost your job. But I don't really get why you would choose to surf WF and DP all day during your downtime. If you did surf you could at least read case studies / new info, or go to more of an authority site and learn more about whatever it is you do at your job.

IMO there is nothing wrong with surfing the web as long as you do it to better yourself and in turn, use what you have learned for the company and make changes (as long as you get your original work done!!!)

Although, if they did fire you and you were actually using the forums to learn and help out the company. Then that is just crazy-town.

I agree with what has already been said. When I got laid off, I had money saved just in case something like that happened and I still struggled. You definitely need another job before pursuing IM.

Depends on how much money you have saved up. I quit my main job recently (I have two part-time jobs) because I disagreed with how the people who took over the company were running the business, but luckily I have a year's worth of savings plus the small income of the other part-time job so can afford to take the risk. I'm going to give it a go for a year and if it doesn't work get another job, but I know its really hard to give it your all only during the evening when you are knackered from a full day's work. Can you survive on a part-time job and use the other day or so to put into the IM venture?

  • Profile picture of the author megansays
I see the wisdom in finding another job, but facing desperation can be a serious motivator, too. If you can get unemployment (sometimes not if you're fired) and don't have big bills, now might be the right time to go for it.

When hubby got laid off, I had to do something, so now I write. Definitely has its ups and downs, but it is a lot easier to get to work knowing there is no job to rely on.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[6506607].message }}
  • If you have some savings to get going for half a year or so without having to get a new day job, maybe this is in the long run a positive move for you. Now it's all up to you whether you can monetize your full attention to IM. Good luck.

Seems like most of these posts are not that encouraging, but I agree with most of them. If IM can't bring you enough money, go for an offline job and work on your IM skills. When you realize that you can earn your living by doing it, quit your job. m2c.

Maybe they fired you because your a lousy employee. I would know because I hired you to write 10 500 word articles for me. You wrote 6, of the six only 1 was 400 words the other 5 were in the 300 's. You offered a refund for the 4 unfinished articles which I accepted and then never sent it. I tried contacting you several times and you just ignored me. I even offered to work something out if you were having problems , you certainly were not using company time to contact me, its been about 3 wks

Well, first thing, since you were fired, you may be eligible for an unemployment allowance, so that can be one side income for you, and I would suggest make a plan. If you are good at content writing, you can make packages like 20 articles for $$ amount and put up a WSO for warriors (just make sure you make it highly valuable for them) ... and take an x amount of orders (which you know you can cater to and deliver even if you have to work days and nights). This can give you some money upfront, and other warriors can benefit from your discounted bundle packages.

Chances are you'll get repeat orders and at least get the momentum going.

    (just my 2 cents)

Given how many potential employers look at someone's online history as a factor in the hiring decision, the OP may want to ask a mod to delete this whole thread.

Either that, or hope like heck he can actually support himself via IM.

Dismissing being fired for surfing the web on company time as "their loss" is hardly encouraging for the next potential employer.

Yes I agree. The OP's post doesn't only show a possible problem employee (with work ethic) but even possibly a negative look as far as IM and a JV partner down the road (regarding work ethic again).

I do hope he is looking for a new job/career though and not worrying about article marketing or similar. Please don't be trying to jump on quick in IM hoping to have some crazy turn around of $0/day to $/200/day profit in a months time or something...

I'm sorry to hear that. Unless you decide to do IM full-time with no questions asked or have enough money saved up to financially support yourself, I would find another job for the time being even if it's part-time so at least can you or have some income coming in. Another option is working part-time somewhere and doing IM part-time as well so that you have two different incomes coming in as well.

Thanks all for the replies and encouragement, and some real criticism. Just wanted to clear a few things up for my own good.... Nothing on my job was ever affected by surfing or etc on WF or DP sites. Its over and done with and onto better things. If looking for a way to get rid of me, they did, their loss, and my gain...

I never got into article or SEO for full time income but more of a side thing but if it blossoms into something full time then I'm all for it. Realize IM work takes a LOT of effort and a lot of traffic to sites to get there.

Thanks all again and appreciate the feedback, critiques, and comments. Some of it was shooting myself in the foot and some of it was them not appreciating my work. Hopefully someone will appreciate the work and go from there. Never give up on yourself. Thanks

But having a day job (even part-time) can help your IM efforts ten-fold if your aren't financially stable from IM already, having a little investment money goes a far way. Good luck either way friend!

  • Hi Pamon,

Sad to hear you lost your job. I advise you to always keep this in mind when venturing into anything that can affect your finances:

The sustainability of your healthy growing overall personal financial portfolio...

The components of an overall personal financial portfolio, in order of importance since each component affects the next components and vice versa, are as follows:

    • SUSTAINABLE INCOME - You just lost your regular, seemingly sustainable (until you broke the office rules implemented by your employer) income source. Time to use up your savings (see below) to establish a new income source. Don't have savings? Use your credit account or get a loan from your bank or from a friend or a relative. The objective is to establish an income source that can allow you to continue building the sustainability and size of your overall personal financial portfolio. Specific recommendations:

Study the results of the content writing services you offer clients who have websites, online businesses or companies with online marketing campaigns. Is your income sustainable and more than enough for you to build up your savings, assets, investments, network and credit resources (other components that I'll discuss below)? Can the day job you'll find satisfy these requirements? i.e. A day job should provide you with regular income, assets in the form of insurance, benefits and retirement options, as well as network and credit resources...

    • GROWING SAVINGS - When you get to a point where your sustainable income grows in a way that also grows your savings, then keep on growing those savings until it can make you live off it for a minimum of 3 to 5 years, considering your growing day to day living expenses and lifestyle. Three to five years should be more than enough time (and money in the form of savings) for you to recover and establish another sustainable, growing income source that can again grow your savings. And, with growing sustainable income and savings come growing network and credit resources...

    • GROWING ASSETS - When you get to a point where your sustainable income grows in a way that keeps on growing your savings, and you already have savings that can have you surviving in the same living and lifestyle standards you want, then it's time to grow your assets. Remember, the time to spend or invest money outside of your daily living expenses should be after you have more than enough savings, based on the living and lifestyle standards you want. And, with growing assets come growing network and credit resources...

    • GROWING SUSTAINABLE INVESTMENTS - When you reach a point where you have growing sustainable income, savings and assets, then it's time to invest the "overflow" of your savings after you acquired more than enough assets that should at least be quadruple the value of your savings when liquidated. Invest it in businesses, online businesses or brick and mortar businesses with online marketing departments or in stock shares or in oil or in gold. When investing in anything, keep in mind that you should treat each of your investments as something that should have an overall financial portfolio of its own, that's separate from your own overall personal financial portfolio. This way, when an investment fails, then you can use the savings, assets, sub investments and network and credit resources accumulated by your investment to correct issues or establish other investments. This way, you don't touch your own overall personal financial portfolio. And, with growing investments come growing network and credit resources under your own overall personal financial portfolio...

    • GROWING NETWORK and CREDIT RESOURCES - Since this started off when you first had growing sustainable income and grew alongside your savings, assets and investments, imagine you get to a point in your life when disaster strikes and you lose a sustainable portion of your income, savings, assets and investments because you need to spend and liquidate these to survive and re-establish your overall personal financial portfolio, in which you only get to a point where you cannot afford to spend or liquidate your remaining income, savings, assets and investments, then you have network and credit resources you can use to do this, and by this time, your network and credit reosurces should be more than enough for you to survive and re-establish your overall personal financial portfolio...

A sustainable growing overall personal financial portfolio will keep you miles and miles and miles and miles and miles away from being homeless, sleeping in a cardboard box and eating canned beans for breakfast, lunch and dinner...
