Have you made any actual friends in the IM space?

I don't just mean acquaintances or people you're friendly with when you need something from them, I mean people you consider to be genuine friends? I ask for a number of reasons, partly because I want to see how some of the more successful members operate, and partly because i'm genuinely interested.

I've been working online since 1999 and I'd say that some of my closest friends are people who I originally met online.

You can start a decent relationship with someone you partner with/meet on a msg board etc. But the best friendships end up forming when you get up and go to live events, Affiliate Summit and different expo's in your niche (for example the Online Traders Expo if your in the online trading niche).

I have no friends. Nobody likes me. I just pretend to be awesome.

But really, there have been a small group that I would consider actual friends. People I would want to hang out with and grab a beer if they actually lived within a manageable distance.

    Many...

Some of my closest friends are people I met online originally, some going back a decade or more.

The best bet is to get your butt off the computer and get together with people at live events or local meet ups where you can share a drink, meal and a laugh.

I have plenty of friends online but I have not met a genuine friends. After all, it's hard to be friends when there's business involved.

My genuine friends are in the real world

I like this take on the subject. No matter the realm, IM or any other forum or social platform where 'friends' are made and claimed, the reality is that a lot of these 'friends' would annoy the hell outta ya if you were stuck in a closed room, in person, with them for any length of time.

And there are a certain amount of people who strike you as a-holes, from their words, but you would really like and enjoy being around in the real world.

It is not intentional or by deceit, but SO MUCH of your personality, the true you, is masked by your keyboard and computer screen. It is unavoidable.

I HATE the way all of this net stuff has diluted the true meaning of the word friend. It is one of the key reasons I have never and will never use Facebook on a personal level - it devalues the real meaning of what a friend is as it promotes the deluded concept of what a friendship is and what that word really means.

What you have on da net, mostly, are pen pals, not friends. That's not to say you cannot meet a future friend online, but most people you interact with online you will never meet in person, a basic requirement for a friendship.

One man alone can be pretty dumb sometimes, but for real bona fide stupidity, there ain't nothing can beat teamwork.

  • Hmmm for some reason, I have only met a very small group of people IRL from my IM business. Probably because I dont go to conferences, etc.

I have a couple of friends in Australia that I met through IM and yes I would definitely consider them good friends although we have never actually met in person because of them living on the other side of the world & all

Not only have I made a lot of friends in the IM niche, huge opportunities have opened up to me from those friends. Because... we like to do business with those we know, like and trust.

Jim Rohn said you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. That means if all your 5 closest friends ever do is complain about how bad life is, you will probably also be that kind of person too. But if all your friends are wealthy, successful go getters, guess what you'll be?

Have made a few really good friends in the IM field through joint ventures or from meeting them at an event. A lot of it has to do with how you approach them and what you have in common....pretty much like anyone you eventually become friends with in life.

Nope maybe that's why i dont believe much i read and question everything. A wise man who actually made a bundle in this business said, "never meet your heroes".

Sounds to me like you may have your cause and effect mixed up.

If you are talking about the kind of friend that you would drive 100 miles for if their car broke down, and they would do the same for you, then, yes, I have made actual friends online.

    All the best,
    Michael
