I have a small list built from people who download my free plugins or just sign up for tips. I mainly ask for the email, so that I can let them know about updates or fixes as my main plugin is not in the wordpress.org repo (so you won't be told to upgrade on your dashboard).

Anyone who signs up can unsubscribe at any time. I also hardly send much email at all and when I do its around other free advice that I have found really helpful. I have a very low unsubcribe rate, so I expect I don't make to much noise and what I do provide seems helpful as others have told me so.

Having said that I still notice (albeit rarely) that someone goes to the trouble of generating a throwaway email account and making up a fake name, just so they don't give me an email when they download the plugin. They are happy to use my code which I spent a few nights of my own time writing for their own commercial sites, but don't want someone getting their email.

I just don't get it? If it's about privacy then just have an email addy without your name in?

Is it just a case of you don't want someone to benefit from you wanting something from them (even though I don't benefit much at all)?

@lukedidit: One thing's for sure. The end of the world will come and not everyone on Earth would still learn and understand the word 'recognition.'

      Hi Luke

i was thinking of starting a post like this...so well done!

I agree by the way...but what irks me more than anything, is when someone takes your stuff and then immediately unsubscribes. They haven't even got the value of your freebie yet because they've used the 'unsub link' in the confirmation email...

I keep telling myself... this is THE way of purging your list of non-buyers anyway! wth?

So, to the 'un-subers' out there...:p

      Llwyddiant!

Don't lose sleep over it...we can't control who someone is, or whether or not they are going to give us a fake email address. It is frustrating, but since it is largely out of your control just don't give it a second thought.

I should know I worked in customer service for so many years and the amount of loonies was amazing!

I have about a dozen email accounts. I hardly use them but most of the time I keep it to 3-4 accounts. One's personal, one's work/personal and 2 were semi-personal but as time grew on, it became spam-mail (I didn't know any better, I was young! )

I'm sure this has happened to a number of people over the years and it's a pretty normal strategy among people to have a 2nd "spam filter" email account because of it. Now that I think about it, I don't know many people who don't have a 2nd email.

And before some people say, "it's not spam because you subscribed, duh", the person who is "subscribing" for freebies already knows he'll be getting e-mails from you (generally speaking) and doesn't want to deal with unsubscribing from dozens of people.

BIG Mike was 100% spot on. People assume they will get "spam" in their own eyes even though they subscribed to it, but to the extent of emails they get is unknown so they don't want to deal with it.

I am not bashing or encouraging either side, but I wanted to bring about a different perspective on things.

That's why it is better to have buyers in you list, they are usually more loyal to the info you send them, and also you've usually got their "main" emails.

Have you considered that you're not making this sufficiently clear to your visitor? Obviously you know it, but...

I will use my main email address in responding to some free offer *only* if the assurance that I won't be spammed or mail-bombed seems sufficiently sincere and comes from a trusted source.

I also don't know what you mean by "I also hardly send much email at all." In this forum where some marketers mail their lists *daily* it's hard to tell.

Look at what you're doing first. Odds are you need to cultivate trust.

A little condescending there..I posted not for advice, but to invoke discussion.

It's a couple out of hundreds of sign ups, so no I am not going to bother outlining the frequency in which I will email subscribers or try to lull them into the bosom of my trust.
