Here's a niche site idea that can be taken in so many directions.
Why not create a social networking site for a certain type of dog owners - it could be a breed, size, - anything. It could be free or paid depending on the direction you want to take and you could make money from CPA offers, banner advertising, adsense, clickbank products,etc.
You can give your members the opportunity to show pictures/videos of their dogs and share stories and friendships with others that have a great love for their dogs too.
You'd probably want to stick with a particular kind of breed but even at this sub-niche level there's an amazing amount of searches.
For example both french bulldog and american bulldog have over 90,000 searches per month and the adwords costs is a respectable 33 cents and 38 cents respectively.
These are the types of sites that can bring you a regular monthly steady income, the longer you maintain them, the more money they typically will make for you. You just need to make sure that you keep your members returning to your website regularly and posting often.
Offer occasional fun contests for your members to join in on; maybe the funniest picture or video posted for the month, the saddest dog, cutest puppy, and the list is endless. Let the members of the site vote and decide who should win too!
Post your own articles (outsourced or not) about specific breed care, grooming tips and problems that members are experiencing. The members will enjoy the interaction with others that also love their dogs.
If you do this right, word about your site could become viral within your target niche.
