Selling an ebook & monetizing a blog

Hi guys,

I've been reading these forums for a while, but I've only recently signed up with the intention to post.

I hope you don't mind the questions. This is my first time with any serious IM (which is something I'm sure you hear a lot), so be easy.

Quick overview: I've decided to make money through a particular niche. It's actually something I feel quite passionate about, so I think I've got an advantage their when in comes to generating content.
I've written a relevant, short ebook - about 20 pages - but it'll be useful to people.
Now I realise I need a list to advertise to. I don't have this yet. So, I've started writing a blog (I actually had some content I'd written before, just not used for anything). I own a domain, and it's pointing towards my blog right now. That's all fine.
On there, I'm running adsense, and using amazon affiliates to point towards relevant products.
On top of that, I have a free ebook that you can get by signing up to the mailing list, as you'd expect.

Now, if you don't mind, my questions are -

With regards to blog-based content, at what point should I start trying to drive people to the site - How much content should be on there? I think another way to word that question is, what is seen as more valuable? Pre-existing content, or being part of something as it grows? I imagine a mixture of the two, but I was hoping for some opinions.

Secondly, is there anything obvious I'm missing with this strategy? Or any suggestions you could add?

I've searched the forums, and I've read a few places that blogs are considered a bad move. Does that hold true in this case?

I'd be happy to share the site / blog I'm currently working on, but I'm not sure if that's considered bad form.

My apologies if this post has grown a little long, but I'm sure you know what it's like to have questions and to be excited about something!

Thanks in advance.
