Perceived Value vs. Ease Of Use for a Software Product

Hey Forum,

A little while ago I wrote myself a little desktop app to help facilitate online dating. (My C.S. professors would not be proud if they knew what I am doing with my degree)

I've been using it myself, and it seems to work quite well. I looked around and don't see anything like it, so I've been thinking of turning it into a product.

It's the kind of tool that is very effective if a few people are using it, but would lose some effectiveness if too many people were using it at once. So, instead of selling copies, I want to sell time-limited licenses, and make only a certain amount available at a time so it stays effective.

Here's the thing - it's a desktop app, so it runs only on Windows, and requires a download and install. Some people I've talked to seem wary of installing new applications.

On the other hand, I realized that I could re-write the whole thing as browser (Google Chrome) plugin. It would be much smaller, less cumbersome, and work just as well... but...

.. I am getting the sinking feeling that people wouldn't be as willing to *pay* to licence a browser plugin, even if it was in every technical and function way superior to the desktop app.

"It's just a browser plugin, why would I pay $15/mnth for it??"

vs.

"Oh, I get to use this really effective application that I had to download and install for only $15/mnth"

What do you guys think about this?

Also, is this the place to ask if anyone is interested in being an affiliate?

Thanks!

Actually, are people willing to buy time-limited licences at all?

I know they are willing for 'services', but is it possible to position a desktop app as a service?
