One Product = Multiple Domains?

Hey guys.

Let's say you were about to launch a membership service that provided its members with betting tips for horse races.

Let's then say you did some keyword research and found that horseracingtips.com and horsebettingtips.com were both available. Both keywords bring in approximately the same, substantial number of visitors (according to various keyword tools).

Would it be better to then:

1) Put up your membership site on one domain and try to rank for multiple keywords (a friend recommended this, saying it would make it an authority site of sorts)

2) Put up your membership site on both domains, trying to rank each domain for its specific keyword (so effectively having two membership sites out there)

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If it were me I would try to build one big site. I might also have a few smaller sites, but I would especially focus on the one big site 95% of the time or more.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Depending on how big you want to go with it - I would probably get both domains, build your main site around one, but then use the other as a feeder site. Build some good content on it, all tightly based around "horse betting tips", even have a sales page on there if you want, but then the membership site is only on horseracingtips.com.

You don't want to split up your membership because if you've only got 50 members total, each site will then have only 25 each, making for a pretty small and slower starting community. Ideally you want to hit a critical mass.

But that shouldn't stop you from using the other site as another route into your main site. Could always add that one later on too.
