What will you do if you outsource an over $2000 software that is not working

Hello Warriors,
Hope you all are doing great. I will be glad to hear your views on this. I outsourced a job to an Indian guy I got on fiverr. Because of the complexity of the job, it ended up costing me over $2000. I was carried away by his initial sincerity so I did not sign any contracts.

It got to a stage where my client wanted a certain function, he billed me extra, I paid him and gave him the details. He by passed all other details and did only one aspect. When my client wanted to use the software, all the functions were not complete. When I confronted him, he said I must pay for every other function.

When I asked him why he didn't tell me earlier about the extra payments, of course, i got really angry, he replied with all sorts of vile words. Now, my client is not satisfied after $2400 payments, and he is extremely rude. How will you handle a case like this? I have all the skype chats and email communications we did. Any ideas of what next to do will be greatly appreciated.

You made payment through paypal? if yes then open a dispute against all the payments you sent to him and call to Paypal support team and tell them all the matter. I am 100% sure you'll receive your money back.

This is a great way and I think the only way to have your money back. Good luck on getting them back.

    Hey Fenshon

I have been in a similar bind myself. Its annoying but you may just have to cut your losses and find another developer. I recommend always hiring for a small job say sub $100 then take it up from there. This gives you a chance to test the relationship and see if they are right for you.

  • You really have to lay the specs out and have pay per milestone. I would just hire someone to finish it off. Take a loss. These things happen and now you have learned something. Also russian and ukraine programmers are the best.

  • I have been burnt by outsourcers way too many times. Now a days, one of my policies when I outsource a software creation task is to ALWAYS at the end of the project when the software has been delivered, tested and confirmed to work. No payments in advance, no milestones, etc. If the developer doesnt agree with these terms, I search for another one. Like I said, I have been burnt too many times.

You can open a dispute via PayPal and ask them to review the case.

It would be wise to ask your customer to write a formal letter to you and attach it when you open a dispute in PayPal.

You might win or you might lose, there is no guarantee here. However, at the end of the day, you still learn something although it is really an unpleasant experience.

@fenshon any updates care to share the results?

I do a fair bit of outsourcing and am glad to say that I never had any problems like you have. However I always find my outsourcees through either odesk.com or elance.com.

Using those sites you have some checks in place like references and job history. On odesk.com you can even get them to work through the system which monitors there screens so you know the hours billed were actually worked on your project.

    Hope it works out

What wonderful replies you guys gave. I really love them. I am grateful. I think I will open a paypal dispute, if it goes well, then fine. If it doesn't go well I might have to outsource the job to someone else to finish. He said he will correct the errors, but for 3 days now, he has done nothing. He intentionally wants my client to fall out with me. Your replies have given me options to avert that. Once again, thanks a lot.
