Help needed!! - changing themes on Wordpress for an existing blog!!

I'm a newbie here and want to revamp my blog by changing the Wordpress theme, but worried this will lose everything I have done so far. Do I need to back up, start a new theme and then reinstate all the files in the new theme or does Wordpress automatically put everything in the new theme when you change theme? Sorry, I know this is probably not rocket science to most of you but don't want to erase everything I have already done. Thanks in advance.

You can just change the theme and all your content will be OK. Some things you may have to tweak a bit, like the way images are displayed, but for the most part everything will be OK. If you don't have a backup of your site yet, it wouldn't be a bad idea to take one anyway. While I have changed themes hundreds of times on my sites and never had a problem, I've always had backups already anyway so it wasn't an issue to me.

Backup first, backup always. I suggest Backupbuddy or WPTwin (paid solutions), but you could get a list of good backup plugins here too - WordPress › backup « Tags « WordPress Plugins

To change the theme, you can login to your Dashboard, and select Appearance > Themes, and Activate the theme you want to use. If you want to revert back to the old theme, just go to the same place, and Activate the old theme. It's as simple as that. If your theme comes with additional plugins you might have to ensure that those are activated and configured under the Plugins menu. Refer to your theme's support documents if you have them.

Changing the theme will not affect your posts and pages, but could certainly affect your blog configuration. Wordpress keeps your posts and pages intact, but you might need to make changes to the theme's configuration to get back the settings on your blog. Most themes provide a sidebar menu in your dashboard where you can change your configuration (headers, sidebar settings, etc.).
