How many people do you need on your list to start making cash?

I know that it depends on how responsive the list is and how targeted they are.

But let's assume you have a list of people interested in the IM niche as you have been targeting this group with IM related info and products/offers

I know that your relationship with the people on the list is paramount and you shouldn't be spamming them with junk offers every 5 minutes

I know also that it depends on nationality with of course the richer countries more likely to buy but can we just focus on the cold hard numbers for a little while - so tolerate the generalisations my friends if you will

so let's assumed, a targeted list, mainly western based, and not spammed - sent stuff maybe once a week and also offered genuine news/tips/advice

what do the average figures say for this type of list? Would I be correct in saying about 1.5 per 100 on this type of list will buy/purchase?

Or am I way off - just curious here, so feedback appreciated

Typically 3,000 subscribers until you'll see recurring cash everyday. And then of course... it all depends on your niche, it's responsiveness, and how many of them that you can get on your list quickly.

      Nathan,

It all really comes down to the quality of your subscribers. If you have a list of general freebie seekers, you may have very low conversion rates. Conversely, if you have a list of qualified buyers and you are offering something they really need, your conversion rates will probably break all averages.

With that said, if you are just throwing any and all offers that come along at your list, most likely you can expect 1% or less conversions.

My recommendation is to try to really narrow down on a very specific niche that has buyers and then offer a product to them they just got to have. Take care of that list and they will take care of you even if it is a relatively small list.

One tactic I use frequently is segmenting my lists. For example, if I want to promote an Adsense related product, I will create a freebie, a squeeze page, and an autoresponder series for it. After that, I send a broadcast to my general list promoting the freebie. This way, I am qualifying everyone on my list interested in Adsense stuff. It may seem like a hassle for subscribers on your list to subscribe to another one of my lists, however, they have qualified themselves and are highly targeted. I make these lists single opt-in for ease. These people already know and trust me because they are already on my general list where I am constanly nurturing them. I don't have to send a whole series of follow-up emails for every product I promote to the entire list which could irritate them. Only the segmented lists of these highly targeted, qualified prospects get the email series. I have had conversion rates in the double digits from them.

      Hope that helps,
      Later,
      Walt

        Walt was right on this.

It's not about quantity but the quality of your list.

It depends on the relationship you have and the trust you've gain from your list.

Each person on your list is worth equivilant $1 per month.

That's just a rubbish number that has been thrown around by Internet Marketers for years now. It means absolutely nothing.

Do you actually have any solid stats to back that up or are you just repeating what you have heard from others?

I certainly earn a lot more than $1 per subscriber per month.

How much I earn... well that's my business.

But the more targeted and the more personal and genuine your relationship with your list, the better off you will be.

Being a vendor I get to see the results of a LOT of affiliates and how their mailings convert when selling my products. I also subscribe to most of their lists so I can see exactly how they treat their lists and there is a VERY strong correlation between the way they treat the lists and the way those lists react to their promotions.

The guys who promote products every day of the week (the majority) have very lame results when doing promotions. They might make 5, 10 sales if they are lucky. You then see the guys who will only promote a product once every couple of weeks but when they do they can sell hundreds of copies each time. So they actually make more money and don't wear out their list in the process.

I know which one I would much rather be. It sure makes it a lot easier to sleep at night when you know you are not treating your customers like a bottomless money pit.

I have been working with a marketer the last 3months or so and his list is just a couple of hundred but they are high end buyers, he has made about $100k from them in that short space of time. For typical marketers not in the high ticket line, a few thousand is needed to see a good return. If you can get into the tens of thousands and have a buyers list instead of a freebie seekers list then you should be making a healthy return from that.

I would say a few 1000's at least to start getting ongoing sells. And you need to constantly bribe and train your list.

This is rather a random question... because there are so many variables.

The industry standard for IM niche is $1 per subscriber per month.

You therefore need about 3,000 subscribers to make a full-time income.

How many emails per months do you send them for that and what is the ratio of free information to offers?

It all depends on how reponsive your list is and how well you taught them to click on your links. Some people make good money with highly targeted lists under 1000 subscribers.

For the IM niche, a list of 3000-5000 whom you send offers once a week and you constantly train and bribe them would be enough to make you decent money.

It seems you know all the rest needed to make money from it. So there you have the numbers.

I think a good number to start would be 5k. Its better to be safe then sorry and lose subscribers.
That said I generally start at 4k.
