Just A Kind Piece Of Advice From One Warrior To Another...

I work in an outbound marketing position for a large construction company when I'm not fiddling around here.

"What the heck is outbound marketing?"

I basically talk to people, strengthen leads, close sales, etc. That's all that needs to be known for the rest of the story to be understood.

So I was taken to one of the company's leads and the gentlemen, a scruffy fella, ended up being this extremely smart individual. He had all sorts of degrees and was beyond well spoken.

We end up talking about the most random of topics.

He's 65 and his Father, still alive, is 95. He (the gentlemen I was talking to - the 65 year old one) is still is in great shape and looks like he's 45.

He told me that he lives a completely stress-free life. He enjoys every day, takes vacations when he can, and loves every moment of his life because he, nor anyone, doesn't know what the future will bring. (Granted his Father was very successful financially allowing him to live perhaps more stress-free than some others.)

Following our 30 minute-ish conversation, he encouraged me to remember to live stress-free... or as stress-free as possible. After all, this was what he attributes his wonderful health to. Being as intelligent as he came off as and with the many health-related degrees and certifications he's received, I nodded.

Now...

Over the last 2 hours I've been trying to get all sorts of things integrated with one another. AWeber, JVZoo, e-Junkie, PayPal, a WSO... this, that, and the other thing too. It's been stressful! I've been beyond focused on completing it and felt my blood pressure rise every time something was messed up (which was rather frequent).

Then I remembered what the man told me (after the 2 hours of stress ended and things finally seem to be working, that is)... to not stress out. It's unhealthy and unnecessary in most cases unless we let a situation or lifestyle take over our well being.

That's why I'm posting this long thread (I wasn't planning for it to be long initially, I swear!)

Sure you'll mess things up with your campaigns/ventures, work some long hours, have ups and downs, but... try to not stress out too much. Stress is indeed a factor of bad health. Many studies have shown that it can lead to premature death even.

If you're feeling stressed out or you realize something is just taking too much out of you, your PC won't vanish if you step away for a little. Just go take a breather, enjoy the nice weather, grab a cold drink, whatever will make you happy.

And that way, our community can be more healthy and our kids (well, I don't have any yet - I'm only 22!) can enjoy their Grandmothers and Grandfathers more (or, if you're not one for kids, at least your family, friends, and animals!)

That's all.

Great reminder. Too often we get so caught up in the money-making part of the "Internet lifestyle" that we forget to live.

I like this advice from a super cool dude.

Often when you are stressed out you will find that there are those around you that don't support what you are doing. They may be critical of you or belittle you or in some way make you feel badly about yourself.

The best advice is to have as little to do with them as possible.

You might also take a look at your life and find those things that you are doing that leave you upset. In particular, this will be those things that you are doing that you don't want others to know about (you know the things I am referring to.)

Be good to yourself and just knock off doing those things and your life will become more peaceful.

    Ross!
Awesome stuff man, stress can get very dangerous indeed if it goes out of control.
I tend to break my work into small chunks or tasks 30-45 minutes each. If I bump
into a problem that's driving my nuts I ask everyone that I know and don't.
the support you get from people helps out tremendously.

    Look at the big picture.
Take perspective of the stressful situation.
Ask yourself how important it will be in the long run.
Will it matter in a month? A year? Is it really worth getting upset over?
If the answer is no, focus your time and energy elsewhere.

    Adjust your standards.
Perfectionism is a major source of avoidable stress.
Stop setting yourself up for failure by demanding perfection.
Set reasonable standards for yourself and others, and learn to be okay with “good enough.”

    Focus on the positive.
When stress is getting you down, take a moment
to reflect on all the things you appreciate in your life, including your own positive
qualities and gifts. This simple strategy can help you keep things in perspective.

    -Kal.

You should try meditating for a while each day.

It's one thing to take a rest and chill out, but it's a whole different ball game being in a complete state of relaxation.

I don't think you can learn it in a day. For me it was a good few weeks of hard work before I broke through the ceiling. Once you're in a trance it's an amazing feeling.

To add to this, I believe eating a lot of vegetables everyday will have the most significant changes on your stress.

There are many supporters of this theory. http://archive.mensjournal.com/andiscores (among many others).

I also took a few nutrition classes in college, and learned a lot about micronutrients (in veggies) and their role in your body. They also help cleanse your liver/kidneys, strengthen your immune system, oxygenate blood, help balance blood sugar, stabilize adrenal glands aka hormone production (which also keeps you younger) the list is endless.

    EAT YOUR VEGGIES PEOPLE!

Remember to exercise, take some sports, enjoy your hobbies too!

As much as we want to achieve success in IM, i personally believe health is as, if not more important than wealth.

Thanks Ross for the great reminder!

    Cheers

Apologies to Ross for earlier shenanigans,Here to make amends...

At least in my world, there is very little stress free moments.
I have no doubt that the key to longevity is indeed stress reduction.
in order to accomplish that I would have to completely unplug, get divorced, disown my 20 and 22 yr old kids, sell my house, turn in all my vehicles( credit be damned), move to a low rent surf ghetto and consume mass quantities of certain substances. In other words , Ain't gonna happen.

Nice thoughts and an awesome story though, Ross.

P.s. Does Bloody Marys count as vegetable consumption?

Well, I'm not anymore. But I was at the time. Amazing what a mini wifi adapter and an itouch can accomplish! Joe was posting from the wonderful world of Disney while testing a strategy.

Oh, and Rob was referring to this as his shenanigans:

I left a job that was causing me an incredible amount of stress. I now make 50% less of what I was making before, and even though some have called me crazy, I don't regret it at all. I wouldn't suggest to anyone to automatically leave their high paying job for a lower paying job to reduce stress. Try to learn how to reduce the stress by applying techniques but if nothing is working and it is getting to the point that you cannot sleep at night, it may be a good idea to start looking for another job or possibly changing your position. I feel a thousand times better than I felt before and little by little I'll be making what I was making before with less stress doing things that I like.

Ross, as you said bro, this life definitely comes with stress! It's all about how you choose to respond to the unnecessary stress i.e. negative people, unhealthy habits, lack of planning, poor eating habits, etc. This was a great reminder ! : )

      Excellent Thread!!

Reminds me of the decision we made after reading the 4-Hour Work Week....

We have our house up for sale and are moving to Italy to live La Dolce Vita!

      Will I continue working?

... yeah, but MUCH less because I'll be more focused.... because there will be less distractions.

I'll work about 15 hours per week to start, then whittle it down to 5-10 hours per week.

      Stress?

Much less in Italy, due to the fact that they work so they can live...we seem to live so we can work...

      Just my 2 cents

Great advice. I'm one of those people who always lets work stress me out. It's hard to unplug sometimes though because I have a day job plus my freelance endeavors. I feel like I am always on the go or always thinking about work. I feel so stressed most of the time that I think it has become my normal. Thanks for reminding me that I need to escape it sometime.
