Building a big blog in a week!

Hi all,

Earlier today I set myself a pretty wild goal: Building a blog with a solid follower base in a week!

I was a bit bored... when I noticed I have a loads of free time next week. So I will have time to be online 12-14 hours a day. This made me think a little. Then I came up with this quite interesting, maybe a bit stupid idea.

What I would like to achieve by the end of the week:
  • 200 (unique) visitors/day
  • Little amount of money from AdSense or affiliate marketing
  • Decent traffic from organic sources (SEs)
  • 300+ Twitter followers
  • A kind community on the blog

I know that these goals are very optimistic and challenging. I also know that there is nothing called overnight success on the net, but I found this challenge a quite fun thing to do.

I would like to know your thoughts and questions on my ideas! Thanks!

Regards,
Akos

P.S.: I will be posting a follow-up to this post in a week with the results of this project..

    Hey,
if you can pull that of you could make it into a case-study and sell it :-) Would be quiet an achievement. Even to build a community around a blog within a month would be something that I'd love to learn!
Best of luck to you Akos!

      Thanks!
Good idea! Making a free (or a paid) e-book or a case study if the thing works out would be quite an awesome thing.

Definitely case study...use it for free to build your list! But anyway, good luck with this...how are you planning to promote on Twitter? I know that you said you were starting from scratch on everything, Twitter included, but if you end up having a pretty good following, you could get those hits per day easy! I would focus hard on social media for the traffic, and use dashboards.

The traffic shouldn't be hard idk about the rest.

You could easily get that traffic by writing a good piece everyday about something that is hot in the news and tying it in to your niche then placing the your link on active related comment boards, FB pages, twitter hashtags etc..

Example (illustration purposes only): How will Obama care affect your Wet/Dry Vac (if you can pull that one off you know you're good lol)

I do this whenever I'm looking for a bump in traffic, but I do recommend that the article you write be good and a benefit to the reader if you want to get repeat visits.

Well, thanks for the good tips. One thing... I am thinking about the usual quantity vs. quality question: Should I write shorter but more posts a day or longer but fewer posts?

Quantity will help in one way quality in another.

With quantity you can cover more areas of interest I'll use Makeup for an example. If I write only one article about mascara I only attract persons with that interest. If I write about mascara, lipstick, eyeshadow etc I increase my odds of exposure. Plus more articles will help with your SERPs which was another of your goals. (I don't know why I chose makeup it was the only thing that came to mind)

With quality you will increase your exposure in a different way by increasing the chance that your article gets shared. I'll give you an example: I wrote this article Google's AdSense Ban doesn't Add up | How to Day Trade I don't know anything about AdSense but I do know about business and tied it into mine. The article was very informative and provided info no one else was offering. It ended up being shared by people who do know about AdSense and that related biz nitch. Plus quality will get you followers and potential customers.

    It is MORE than possible:

^ From a blog I started on Friday!

    My advice -

Write for your audience NOT the search engines.

Go where your niche hangout online.

Both of these sound simple but it amazes me how many people write purely in the hope of getting ranked on Google.

Go to where the people are in your niche - find authority sites and offer to supply some awesome content.

Build a community and give people a reason to come back and you will do this easier.

    Good Luck!

    Chris

That is quite a goal you have set for yourself! Good for you! I totally agree that if you succeed a case study would be very valuable.

I would also think a little bit more in the long term too. Since it seems as though you have a week with lots of free time I'm assuming that after that you will not have as much free time. I would spend part of your extra time week writing and scheduling out blog posts for the future. This will keep the content fresh. Regular blog posting will be necessary for a long term success.

Seems challenging and very special goal for anyone. I know that if you have confidence with your technical skills then its nothing impossible for you.

Best of luck for you. As well I am looking for the case study report...

I think it's a good challenge, so why not go for it. Might take you longer than 7 days to get 200 organic visitors from the search engines, but have you considered a bit of paid advertising in with this?

Why not have a squeeze page on your blog too, send some solo ads to it, so you build up a subscriber list. You can start turning your subs into regular readers. Getting these same guys to connect on Twitter will help things go viral on twitter too.

      Sweet tips! Thanks!
I like the concept of transferring connections from the blog to Twitter, so that the blog could get more hype.

I got to page 1 on Google with my weight loss blog after a week so it is do-able - I'm not up to 200 visitors a day though - that is a big ask! - most I've had was 62 visitors yesterday after 3 weeks, but then I was starting from absolute scratch with no IM knowledge at all. I didn't monetise until two weeks in either as I was absolutely focussed on content - I'm a content is king advocate! I've written a blog about the last three weeks as well!

Highly doubt your blog will rank for anything in less than a week, especially after the latest google penguin update.

You can definitely get the traffic using social marketing/media though. Social media is great these days. I'd look into that if you're looking for quick traffic.

it's possible but it will need one or possibly two or all of these things

      1) massive time commitment, long long working days

      2) investment for advertising/seo/traffic driving purposes

      3) contacts, knowing someone with a big audience who can vouch for you

Part 3 is very important and often overlooked

To be honest I don't think this is doable from scratch (with no prior planning) but then again you haven't mention specifically what strategy are you going to follow either.

I have seen blogs that literally explode in just a few days but these were authority bloggers with many prior weeks of building buzz and passing the voice around in sites that had a lot of traffic already.

Then doing something like a huge contest, a massive giveaway, things that make you stand out instantly.

Other than thinking completely outside the box, I don't see it happening but hey, I really want to wish you good luck and if you can visualize it, you may achieve it!

    Good luck man!

    Sergio

PS. The most common strategy to send quick massive targeted traffic amongst blogs is guest posting on authority sites.

This takes time though, as you have to create the content and send it over for revision, if it gets accepted, this may take weeks and sometimes even a lot more than that to be scheduled for publishing so this is useless for a week but useful in the long run.

I disagree you can do WAY bigger than this... even with a new blog.

Depending on your niche, if you write something funny, controversial, etc ... and you get it on the first page of Reddit. That's worth TONS of traffic.

I would do it all with video.

I'd create 5-10 video posts for my own blog, so people who come to my site have stuff to look at and content for them to watch.

After that, I'd go to other blogs in my niche and make video responses to their posts. Most people never take that much time or are unwilling to put their face with their opinions, so you'd have a huge leg up, and win points with the blog owner.... not to mention video content is really easy whip out. At least for me, I can make 3 videos in the time I write one grammatically correct written post.

    Blog Seed Explosion

    1. Open a YouTube channel and fully optimize all settings - including your channel name, channel description, about section, etc.

    2. Start creating simple videos with a flip or similar - or - create screencast videos on your computer using programs like screenflow (mac) or camtasia.

    3. Start sharing your videos across social media sites and blog comments (link back to your youtube channel)

    4. Use description box in your youtube videos to link back to your blog.

In most cases before I launch a blog in a niche, I look to see if I can make videos. Most cases, I can and it works.

People are more likely to watch a short informative video then they are to go read a big blog post. So, do that! Create short videos and build your audience. Then announce that you are launching a blog site. The traffic will then be waiting.
