How to Host PDF Info Prod.(to avoid indexing)?

I have a PDF info product that I am giving away for free to get people to join my mailing list. I just signed up for Aweber. Right now my opt in form just says: enter your email to receive this free product. Should I send them a download link in an email? Or put it on the next page after they opt in? In either case, how do I "host" it so that it doesn't get indexed by the search engines?

If I just send them the PDF in an email, idk have to worry about it getting "indexed", right? I can just attach it from my computer. Is this safe?

Yes, you can send the PDF in an email and that couldn't get indexed. But I suggest you don't do that. There is a reason why pretty much everyone is sending out download links rather than sending files directly.

Here's one solution for doing it with a download link.
create a folder in your ftp account.

    Example, if your website is:
    bathunter.com
    then create the folder
    bathunter.com/secretdownload/

then open a text editor, and save an empty file as "index.htm"

then you create a new file in the text editor and put this inside:
    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /secretdownload/
and you save that as robots.txt

then upload this into your main website folder.

then upload this into your secretdownload folder:
    index.htm and your PDF.

If you do this, your PDF file won't get indexed by google, yahoo or bing.

There are many other ways, but this one works and is free :-)

Yes just want to confirm that this is what I do and it works fine.

You can also log into google webmaster tools an they have a page where they help you out with this.

I think I'm going with this method actually, but can't tell exactly what to do:

Idk where to go. I log in to my cPanel, go to addon domains, click on my document root. And then I'm in the "File Manager". Where do I go from there?

      Thanks

Why would I not want to just attach the file from my computer? I'm not sure if this is possible in aWeber actually(w/ automated emails). Just curious....

      So many reasons ...

      1. People buying things online expect and want immediate delivery, so you need an automated process and it's far easier to send out a link

      2. It'll be a nuisance for you to do, and what's going to happen when you're not online?

      3. You might even have bandwidth/volume/email-sending problems, eventually?

      4. It's just not what people expect and it comes across as unprofessional

      5. People don't like emails with attachments - what you send out often won't even make it into people's inboxes, which will only cause you further administrative problems and possible even some complaints and/or refunds

      6. You'll be missing an opportunity to give further information, links, upsells, OTO's and so on, on a download page in addition to by email

      That's just for starters ...

Using an htaccess would prevent the file being indexed.

Emailing it to them is a good idea as it would encourage open rates and participation for an active list. However, it may be more difficult to automate e-mailing a file.

If you are on a host with Cpanel you can password protect the folder containing your downloads. that should keep the indexing bots out.

I'm not quite sure what you worried about. Google can't index a pdf. Just upload it to the root directory of your website. In the email you send, add a link to mysite.com/mydocument.pdf

Anyone clicking on the link will instantly download the pdf with nothing for google to find or index since it isn't a page on your site.

Put it in a zip file, then upload to your website. Search engines can't read inside the zip files. Have your users get a program like Winzip to unzip the file.

      Hello Randall,

I believe your answer is what we've been looking for.

We previously uploaded our samples on our website as they are (in .doc and .pdf formats) and the content gets crawled by SEs. So, we just converted each page to an image, removed the .doc/.pdf files, and uploaded the images in a zipped folder. I believe we should have just zipped the original files instead of converting them to images.

      Thanks!

I did it on one of my crappy sites just for a test. Now I see what to do. Only a few issues:

The page is black and white, and says:

    Index of/secretdownload

    Parent Directory(link to homepage)
PDF(link to PDF(but NOT an actual "download"))
    Index

Apache/jdksjf/9485945(this is a line of weird looking technical web ****)

Anyways, that's not exactly what I want to send people to.

How can I make my page look more professional?
Is there a way to use my WP theme for that page?

Why is the index file necessary(it's just a blank document)?
I used index.html because my computer didn't provide the .htm option. Does that make a difference?

      Hello bathunter,

I believe there's no need to download Winzip or Winrar or any application program that can zip files/folders. If you're using Windows Operating System, simply right-click the folder select 'Send To' and 'Compress (zipped) folder.'

I am not sure with Mac.

IMHO, you can embed the link as a hyperlink. Come up with a phrase that may make more sense to the recipient(s).

For example, 'Click here to download.' Embed the link to that sentence.

pdfs can be created with digital rights that allow or prohibit all kinds of things like printing, editing, saving. The problem is it makes a pain for your users. They have to supply a password every time they read the file.

I usually tell clients not to stress themselves out with securing a PDF unless its really sensitive and only for a handful of people.

      Hello bathunter,

If I understand you correctly, you want to know how to hide a page in WordPress.

We're not an affiliate of this WordPress plugin but we used this before. It's called WP Hide Pages.

      I hope it helps, bathunter.

How can I make it so that the PDF downloads to the subscriber's computer as a file? (This is how it is done by professionals I have noticed)

      sorry for the late reply.

In that case you can create a "download page" to which you send your subscribers:

      bathunter.com/secretdownload/download83.html

And in download83.html you create a link to the PDF file and and you write:
"Right mouseclick and click on Save As" or something like that - and then it will download to their computer instead of opening in their browser.

      Hope this helps.

Good question, I've had PDFs that downloaded to my computer without opening.

But you could always zip it (the PDF that it : ) and that should make them have to download it.
