Creating a Mirco-business to Travel the world. Any Ideas?

I am a few weeks away from quitting my job and traveling the world. Looking for an idea for a micro business that can deliver between $3k to 5k a month after expenses.

Any suggestions??

Freelance work might be a good choice, do you have any skills to offer such as coding or article writing? The problem is getting started, you need to build a portfolio and reputation before you get a steady stream of clients.

If you're only a few weeks away, why not share with us how you got there? I'm very interested to know that myself.

      Hey Jar,

I got here because i realize there may be no other time in my life to take this risk. & i believe by traveling you meet other great people and expand your mind.

i feel that there has been no other time in the history of the world like there is now to travel and start a business at the same time. Your lap top can easily become corporate headquarters. Even 3-5 years ago the internet in foreign countries was not as good as it is today.

I have roughly $5k saved up which can go a long way after i get to south eastern asia

      visa - $60
      airfaire $500
      room- $300/mo
wifi- $20 month (or boot backtrack 5 and hack wifi
      food + entertainment 1,000 month

Aren't we all. Not to sound harsh, but if you think someone is going to come along with an answer and you will then be able to 'plug & play' (and then focus on traveling rather than spending 12 hours/day building a sustaining business), you are not being realistic.

That's an awesome plan dude. I had a business a few years ago that was worth $50K-$75K. I put it on the market to sell it with the plan of doing what you're doing. I planned to fly to the French Atlantic coast, buy a camera, laptop, tent, and scooter, and just explore Europe and Asia until I hit the Pacific. I wanted to take 3-5 years on that trip and just blog the whole thing as I went. Unfortunately, the US economy crashed and took my business, so I never got to go through with the plan.

With the places that you're planning on going, you should be able to earn enough to live on just by writing articles for people. If you stay in even a medium-sized city, you could probably find enough offline IM work there to keep your money flow at a respectable lesson without having to work too hard.

The biggest advice I can give is to remember that this is a business. You will have to invest capital into it - either time or money. Sounds like you are starting out right now so you have more time than money. Don't spend more than you are taking in.

There are tons of business models here - sign up for the War Room and get some free WSOs. Take your pick of a model and stick with it.

Thanks for the advice Mike Martel.

as for Anonymous Affiliate.... what do you consider a reality check? sure getting a job and buying a nice car are cool and easy... but those options suck.

In fact, I was calling for a reality check on your query posted at your initial post (quoted below).

You want a plug-and-play thingy that magically nets you a few grand a month out of thin air while you travel the world... That's not going to happen, and any of us who already make that much will tell you that much. Thus, the call for a reality check.

        • No offense, OP, but it just seems odd that you left this very important task until last.

One of my businesses currently brings in close to $3k a month on auto-pilot -- but it took 2 1/2 years to get to that.

You're severely limiting your options by not having built an income stream already. That's a shame.

    Thanks for the kind criticism,

however it can be done... I can carry my expenses for 5-6 months before i need to realize a cash flow. I am looking for inspiration & words on how+ why it is possible.

I was thinking creating a travel blog with ebooks to upsell?

Unfortunately, you're not looking for inspiration. You're looking for a magic formula. What you're looking for is not reasonable, but it seems that you dont want to hear the advice from IM'ers with more experience than you, thus I guess you will have to try, fail and see with your own eyes.

      Either way, enjoy your trip.

  • OP, here's a piece of advice from someone who did the whole round-the-world backpacking year-off thingy back in his 20s... work your butt off, save up some money (I spent $20k), and take off without worrying about money, or running an IM business from internet cafes, and whatnot.

It will make your traveling experience much more pleasant and stress free.

PS: you'll have the time of your life, trust me

$22,000 to be exact (air tickets included), and it lasted me a bit over a year full year. I backpacked through Middle East (2 months), Asia (5 months), Australia/OZ/South Pacific (2 months), Central America (2 months) and South America (3 months).

Best decision of my life. Not only I had a great time, I visited amazing places, met great people and learned a lot about the world, but also I learned a lot about myself and what things I wanted/needed to change in my life. In a way, it gave me a deeper insight about many things that had not been clear for me before. You know, sometimes when you take a bit of time off and gain some perspective, some things become clearer in your mind...

    Hey goneebo,

Your eagerness is respected. I'm actually doing a similar project that I'm calling LearnSponge. I'm focusing on lifestyle/growth content because I think people identify with the emotional aspects of traveling and learning from experiences. Lucky for me, I have experience in the field and do this type of work freelance for a living. I can simply implement a few hours a day of my work schedule to get stuff done.

I will say this: it's hard work to get a site functioning properly. That includes creating good content, driving people to the site, and figuring out how to make money doing it. I'm still working on my site as I will be leaving my hometown in the middle of August. I DO NOT expect 3k-5k of monthly income any time soon. I would absolutely love it but it's just not realistic at this point in our game. Shoot for a more realistic number and you'll make small strides to that success.

I wish you the best of luck! Contact me on Skype and we can bounce ideas off one another. I'm really excited to put my time into this project. I love photography and writing so I think my blog will feel just as much like a hobby as a business. For now anyway

    Kyle
