I'm having a lot of difficulty finding a niche that is suitable for me, something that I can monetize. How do you figure out your niche? I'm really struggling. It is seriously depressing me because I can't figure out how to move forward and generate income. I can't see a path. I get some of the ideas but I can't see a way to put them in practice from where I am right now in my life. I can't find a niche to follow. How do you find your niche when you don't have the resources to follow your passions?

Quite honestly I look around and I get the impression the way to make money online is to sell snake oil, and to advertise it as super special magic snake oil. How do crappy products like The Truth About Abs or Miracle Mind Method get hundreds of affiliates to generate sales for them? How is any affiliate able to generate any sales at all for stuff like this? Like seriously, where do these sales come from? Where are these customers? Because I've tried looking for them and somehow I don't seem to find them, it's like they are mythical creatures.

Just curious have you bought the so called "crap" products and so you know they aren't any good or are you just guessing?

I take a different approach in that I don't care if I'm "passionate" about a niche or not. Sure I have a dog, but I'm not "passionate" about the "dog training" niche. SLIGHTLY interested is all I really need.

The important thing though is WHY you don't need to passionate...Because if you can find the right keywords then you can get fairly easy ranking to test the niche out (whatever it may be), and simply build it up from there or move on.

So the real task at hand, in my opinion, is not necessarily to find some super passionate niche interest that is going to be your golden ticket, but rather any niche you're slightly interested in and then do proper keyword research to see what you're options are.

      Best,
      Derek

P.S. - I'd like to know this as well...

The easiest way to do is it watch TV or simply look around your room for ideas.. Here goes.

    I have a cat:
    Niche equals --->>> Cat Training

    I love surfing:
    Niche equals --->>> Surfing techniques

    My friend bought a parrot:
Niche equals --->>> Teaching parrots to speak

I heard asian people sometime get really flushed when they drink:
Niche equals --->>> Asian flush cure

I have injured my rotator cuff muscles:
Niche equals --->>> Rotator cuff exercises / remedies

It's so easy.. I could go on..

    I hope this helps..

Here is a formula for success:

      Forget about finding a niche.

Just pick a topic that is of interest to you and of interest to a lot of other people.

Then become a true expert in that area and provide your expertise to others.

Seek to provide the single most valuable source of information on that topic available anywhere, no matter how difficult it may be to accomplish that goal.

And if you do this you will be successful.

Take a look around. You will probably not see too many people with 2 page websites and spun content reaping many rewards. But you will see large numbers of people seeking information from acknowledged masters and rewarding them for sharing that information.

Now, there are certain areas -- get rich quick comes to mind -- where the field is rife with corruption and deception and where the heartless, grasping and greedy are the norm. And in these areas things are made to appear different.

But this is a small, sad corner of the real world, and all the world does not operate this way. What passes for success is these areas is just an illusion.

Achieving real success as a true expert may be a difficult path and the way may be long. But in the end, when you achieve what you set out to achieve, it will be valuable and quite satisfying.

      well, what *are* your passions?

If I asked you to list your 5 biggest passions, what would they be?

Yes, you can try and set up systems in niches you don't enjoy, but better by far to go with a niche you enjoy, because then it won't drag, and you'll enjoy it (which is sort of the point)

      So, 5 passions..?

Go to Amazon or Clickbank and take a look at the top selling info-products in a niche, see if there's alot of competition there, and if no competition exists... milk the niche with all that you've got.

Seriously, go to some of the top affiliate sites and do some research to help narrow down a niche. Either that or sit down and think of a few hobbies or interests you wouldn't mind reading and writing about and start from there. Better yet, do both. Work on one niche to earn $$ from and one as a love project. Just a thought.

You're probably over-thinking it I had the same problem when I started. Something that may help is to use a mind map. You can do it on paper or download it for free from Freemind.

If you use your mind map and come up with some possibilities your next step is to spend some time at the Google keyword tool and find some topics/keywords that get a lot of monthly searches. Also go to Clickbank and Amazon and search through the best sellers. Look through the table of contents for more ideas.

You don't have to necessarily follow your passion, and also, competition is a good thing. If you enter a market where there is no competition, there is probably a good reason (there's either no interest, or people aren't spending money on it).

Pick a niche you are interested in, and can become an expert at fairly quickly, if you aren't one already.

Don't spend more than one day doing this. If it takes you more than a day, you are over-thinking it, and will be tempted to change your mind over and over.

        Hope this helps!

Your issue isn't finding a niche. Finding a niche that is profitable is the easy part. You can go to Amazon, Article Directories, Magazine.com to get ideas for starters.

Guess what my #1 favorite way of finding new markets is?

I simply ask people what their passions and interests are. My niche-dar is almost always on. This weekend I'm going to two weddings and I'm going to mingle and ask people, "What's your story?" I ask them what their hobbies / interests are and I'll be taking mental notes.

Finding niches or marketers is simple. People over-complicate it when the answers are all around them. Where most people falter is in the how......

    "How do I monetize?"

Think about it. Most people know that certain markets have a lot of competition. Why? Because people and corporations are making money in them. Whether it's weight loss, how to cure sweaty palms, dating advice, wedding planning, how to coach little league, how to stop a divorce, etc.

It's time to think about markets in a different way. Think about what problems or issues people are having and then use Google to find solutions to those problems. You'll find a TON of competitors who have done 99% of the research for you.

So the crappy products you just talked about.....how do you know they're crap? Did you try them? Did you implement them? It doesn't sound like it to me. If you look at The Truth About Abs, you'll see that the author did their research. They also have real testimonials with pictures, so clearly they invested the TIME to get those. You're making some very wrong assumptions in your OP.

You're also asking some very basic questions which leads me to believe that you have a long way to go in your marketing education. The first thing you should do is get total clarity on what you WANT. Then you need to write down some goals. I strongly recommend finding a coach or mentor who already has a proven system in place.

And don't let this get you "depressed", there are a lot tougher road bumps ahead when it comes to starting your own business. If you let something like this get you down, in you're in a world of hurt. I think you should take a few days (or a couple weeks) off, take a breather, and really start to think about what you want to do in the next year or two.

It has been a while since I read The Truth About Abs, maybe it got updated/upgraded. What I read is a bunch of filler around the simple truth: To get abs you need to be healthy and lean. There is no point building muscle if you are eating like an off-season bodybuilder or dieting if you are sedentary and anorexic.

Everything else is bs dressing up the book to make it seem like it has more meat than it really does. Drinking tea won't give you abs. Drinking soy milk won't hide them. Unfortunately the simple truth is kind of buried and easy to miss because the book spends a ton of pages on trivial side issues. Lack of clarity is the easiest way to lose the willpower to go through a difficult long term goal like getting visible abs. Could be that I don't remember the book clearly enough but that is not really what I am most concerned about. My first reaction to the book was simply "this is kinda crappy considering how popular it is... that's awesome, I should make my own abs eBook". My follow-up reaction was, "It's all in the sales letter/marketing and even if I make a better product, I don't think I can compete with them as far as the hard-sell is concerned so what's the point". It's that, the idea that the actual product doesn't matter that much as long as the sales letter is good that really bothered me.

Hmmm seems to me that you have given yourself an answer here...you can't get abs by dieting yet being sedentery, you know this but there are people who don't, or need to be reminded to get up and get going. These are the people that it was written for.

Create a product that you know about and someone else wants to know about.

Sounds like you can find a niche you just don't think you can market it well.

You need to stop over thinking it. I have that same mental block when people ask me what I love or what I'm passionate about because my interests, like most, are sporadic.

Just take something you find your self thinking about a lot, or wanting to do, and run with it, see where it goes.

It's a little less about finding your niche, and more about finding out what YOU want and running with it.

How to gain control over my body (this includes healing health issues and cosmetic remodeling like losing weight, whitening teeth, etc, etc, etc) and how to gain control over my mind (lucid dreaming and how to deal with psychological issues like depression).

Taking it to the most extreme, how to gain control over one's life, spirituality. The nature of reality and our relation with it (is there a personal God or is the universe just a big machine?), our limits (is there any point to life if we are all going to die anyway? are we cogs in the machine or free agents?), our options (is the law of attraction bull**** or for real? do people who get results without actual effort doing something behind the scenes or just randomly lucky?), etc.

What do you enjoy reading and writing about? What area of expertise would you like to be working with?
That's a tough way of phrasing it because a lot of things that used to interest me fell by the wayside in the recent years and I haven't really found good replacements. The answer that might match the question most accurately would be the mystical interpretation of popular media (movies, TV shows, music), I find it fascinating how even the most innocent looking shows are filled with mystical symbolism and structure.

Eben Pagan says to think of niches as needs. Can you find a group of people with a need you can meet? Is this group of people reachable and large enough to be profitable? If so, you've got something. The best niche is something that is at the intersection of your passion, profit and skill.

Like, I think kitesurfing is really cool but I don't have the resources to do it and actually get a good sense of how much I may or may not be passionate about it. To become an expert in it would require investing a lot of time and money which I don't have. I could go into the kitesurfing niche once I have some success with something else, but not right now.

The same applies to a bunch of other stuff. I'm in a very difficult financial situation and when I stop to think about the things I can do, I don't really see anything that I am all that interested/passionate about. I need to grow my income in order to grow my sphere of interests and be able to offer more value to people. When I hear advice like "become an expert in something you love" it feels like a catch 22, my mind sort of freezes.

Kitesurfing? You don't need to have the resources to do it. You just need to properly research keywords and put up a quality website, and quality content can be created without you having any involvement or expertise in the niche.

    1. What are you good at?
    2. Can you create a useful product or offer a service?
    3. Can you market yourself?
    4. Do you understand SEO to rank websites on Google?
    5. Do you have a product or service (your own or others') that you really believe in?

If you think making money online is any different from the physical world, think again. All successful online ventures are run by people who can offer value to their customers. It can be through blogs, websites or products. You have to find your own product or service.

Things that one can take up for making money:
    * Niche sites (need to be an SEO expert)
    * Flipping Domains (find the domains that others want to buy immediately)
    * Blogging (requires networking skill)
    * Flipping websites (buy websites and sell them after adding value)
    * Turnkey websites (build websites for others)
    * Web design services (marketing and/or web development skill)
    * Sell on eBay (need your own products)
    * Freelance writing

What do you talk to your friends and family about?

If you lost your job and needed to retrain, what would you study?

When you watch TV, what do you watch?

    What books do you read?

If you could do anything you liked, what would it be?

A website does not have to start out being an authority site.
    That is a Google myth.
You can also document your journey to learning how to ... whatever.

Exploring your passion is one way to find a niche. But having a specific area of knowledge can also provide clues to what kind of product or site might be a good fit for you.

I recommend grabbing a pen and piece of paper, and writing down twenty things which you think you have some knowledge about. Feel free to write down the first thing that comes to your mind.

Don't search for the holy grail of niches. You'll paralyze yourself and do nothing.

I agree with most of the other posters that your first niche should be something you have some knowledge or at least some interest in -- then make sure there enough other people who are also interested and willing to spend some money.

    You're a Rock Star! That's your niche!

Joking aside, in addition to the great advice you've already been given, it sounds like you know enough, have experienced enough, and probably have the tools to succeed somewhere (the fact that you know about the Warrior Forum speaks to that), but it sounds like you either don't really know who you are or you don't believe it enough.

Stop trying to find your niche- I think that's distracting right now. You want to figure out what you bring to the table? What you really have to offer? It's a matter of the heart- and that isn't as easy to figure out as picking a topic you think you might like.

I'm not buying anything from anybody that I don't believe is authentically passionate about what he's doing and what he knows. Neither is anybody else. So for the time being, stop trying to pick a topic.

You've been given great advice on where to start digging into what's in your heart. I would add to that by suggesting a form of free-writing designed to shut the mind up and help get what's in the heart out on paper- where you can see it and do something with it. I wrote about it in detail here:

Up Your Game- Write from the Heart when Developing Your Ideas.

I didn't write it for figuring out your niche, but it's principles apply (and there's nothing for sale, so I'm ok posting the link here). If you'll do it in relation to all of the other advice you've got here, it really will help you.

Be careful not to give in to laziness at this point- if you're serious about figuring things out, you'll take an extra day or two to start digging in.

(added bonus advice- your niche is a fluid concept, you don't have to have it locked in before you even get your feet wet- it will develop as you get in the game and start bringing your "flare" and personality to what it is you decide to pursue.)

    Now start writing!
