Following others on twitter

Anyone has experience with following a lot of twitter users? I mean twitter has pretty strict rules, so what is the best pace to build list of users i follow? I tried to follow about 500 people at a time, but got warned by twitter.

    I have added people from some groups on twitter. Well twitter account was brand new. I didn't use software i added them manually. I guess i have added them pretty quickly - dunno maybe in 15-30 min

      I don't know if there are any hard and fast rules, but if on day 1 of your twitter account you try follow hundreds of people they may think you are a spammer

      why not manually add about 100-200 a day? to be honest that's all i could bear of that monotonous task anyway

      one question i would like to ask is what % of twitterfolk follow you back (assuming their ratio of followers to following is about even or they follow more than they are followed)

      I'd say about 30-40%

      Just don't make it too obvious what you are doing ...

      I just do a few each day - and un-follow the ones that are not following me back.

      You've got to make it look natural coz the Twitter people will suss on otherwise

      There really isn't a good reason for hard and fast following, even if you aren't using software. Twitter tends to view it as spamming. On these social networks, if you absolutely must try to sell on them, speed is your enemy. Like it or not, it's about your relationship with people, and if you are just the guy behind a weird handle hoping for a followback, they have no reason to trust you or listen to what you want to say.
