Streaming Audio from your web site - What's the best way?

I'm looking for a good, reliable way to stream audio from a static page on my website and wonder what others use and your likes/dislikes.

I'd rather it wasn't a monthly service but don't want a heavy server load either. Actually that last sentence struck me as fun once I re-read it. I DO want there to be a heavy server load. Once there is that means the audio file is getting tons of plays/traffic and I can switch to a monthly service like audiogenerator or something.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks
Mike

    Hi Mike,

Do you mean a pre-recorded audio to play? If it's not too huge,
you can actually run that on your own website by using a
    Flash MP3 Player embedded there.

Ok, I must be having a brain dead day! Asher, I tried yours and it looks straight forward...BUT when I follow the tutorial, the player doesn't show up on my page.

The page background is black....wonder if that makes a difference?

Have you uploaded the necessary files into the correct folders
on your site? I had the same problem until I fixed the correct
folder names and made sure I had uploaded them all~

Well, I'm not sure about the folder names.

If I want the audio to appear on is mysite.com/folder/index.htm

Does the audio folder get created in the root like mysite.com/audio or does it have to be right in the folder like mysite.com/folder/audio ?

P.s. I should also add that I'd like to have the audio in a spot where visitors can't just hop in and download the audio. They'll be opting in and then will be sent a link.

P.s.s. ***Ok, I've got it sorted to where the player will show up but it says "error opening file". I have the test.mp3 in the Audio folder and the script on the page pointing to the correct spot....

          Thanks

The thing to watch is what kind of user experience is your
      system delivering?

I often use wireless broadband and most websites don't
compress video or audio content effectively for me to have
      a good experience.

If it's an hour long I would lean towards having it in a download
format but there may be reasons you want to have it stream.

I don't know all the issues with audio, but I've found with video
for me the best solution is to compress and host it myself...
I get flawless playback without "hitches" because my videos
are optimized to work great on slower connections.

Thank you, Mike. With that, I like you already! :p

If it's a 1 hour mp3 file, that thing will do. Unless you
want to use archive.org to host your mp3 file and then
link from there - it's also plausible to save on the
      bandwidth.

Search Google for 'audio play button' and you'll find a sweet tutorial (for free) with the script/files you need to set this up on your website...

    Enjoy
