Following on from good advice here, what does anyone think of this idea?

Ok, last week i asked if i should consider selling products in the mmo niche, even though i am not an expert in this field...the answer was quite rightly a big no by the majority...my reasoning for considering this was i was guessing that there must be some out there who claim to be gurus but are not, yet still make money in this area and to be honest i wanted a slice of that...anyway listening to the voice of reason in my head and through most replies here, I am going to try and offer people great information about things that i know, then consider the money aspect afterwards....

My plan...i have spent the last 2 years in college learning HTML and CSS, photoshop, flash and actionscript and a few other things - all pretty low level to be honest as it was a very broad subject area to squeeze in within the course structure, but I have really enjoyed it none the less. To be honest i had to heavily rely on online tutorials etc, as im sure lots can relate to here.

I am going to make a blog/site with lots of resources, links to DECENT tutorails that i have actually followed, good sites to learn from, things i have done and enjoyed. I am sure it will be useful people, and i will thoroughly enjoy doing it (already got the domain and starting to add content!).

My question is is there a potential to make money with this site? I mean other than a few amazon books or other stuff, it will be mainly a free resource for anyone who is interested in it. I am going to make this site regardless, but it would be nice (and probably allocate more time to it) if there was potential there to monetize in other ways...

Any thoughts from anyone here would be greatly appreciated

Alan

I would say the money potential depends on how popular your site becomes. Obviously you could put up some affiliate links and even personally recommend some decent products. If your blog takes off you could really make some decent change. Steve Pavlina recommends products that he approves of and he makes a VERY healthy recurring income from them, but his blog is seen by thousands. So You better get out there on the social networks
    and get known!

Thanks for the replies, i will look at the competition and try not to do what everyone else is doing..thing is in the 2 years i was learning from online resources, there are some good sites but i believe i could write stuff a bit clearer than some of the tutorials i followed - then again I might have just been using poor quality ones, but i have hammered them over the past couple of years...

Thanks for the tip on social media too, yes something i will definitely try to use to promote...i think it will be far easier promoting something i have actually used, would use and (hopefully, once built!) believe in the product i put together..i think the belief would be the easy bit, it would be the monetization that might not pay off in terms of ROI...

Free resource sites are hard to monetize. The people searching for them don't use buying keywords. But if you have a genuine interest in the subject, go ahead and put it up.

It will be a learning experience. It will get you familiar with the control panel machinery, Filezilla, and all the etcs.

After you do some writing about things you are interested in, you kind of get into writing. It tends to spread out and take in more topics that you find interesting.

You can make good money from advertising (adwords or sponsored) by offering free tutorials and resources. Should cost relatively low amounts to set up and run.

First of all do your research and see what else is out there and how those sites are being monetized.

If it's something you enjoy doing then you're more likely to stick with it and your passion will show through to your visitors.

I agree with Dean here. Make sure that you do proper research and spend some time figuring outhow they are monetized.
        After that go for it.

You should post the link to your site here so we can take a look at it. I could also pass it on to my brother who is a graphic designer. I think he knows more about photoshop than the creators of the product, since he's been using it forever and actually uses it on a daily basis to create billboards.

Thanks for the kind offer! I shall take you up on that (if i can find you here!)

And posting a link, literally bought the domain and set up a structure yesterday, just in the middle of a first post when i noticed this reply....once it has a bit more content, enough to give people an idea of what i have and where to go, i will definitely post a link for feedback and advice

There is a potential for me to become a billionaire by next year, but chances are very slim. That being said, even if you enjoy some particular niche, perhaps it is time to get out of that shell and explore other possibilities; after all business is all about venturing into new opportunities that may not seem appealing at first, but can become quite rewarding once you put effort into them.

Anyhow, my advice to you is to explore other opportunities instead of sticking to something you are familiar with.

    Good luck,
    Vlad
