Posting "funny pictures," other people's graphics, etc

It has been pointed out to me that a lot of the cute graphics and such that people have been posting here are from sites that do not allow this usage.

When posting anything here in the future that isn't your own work, please include a link to the policy on the original site which shows that the material may be reposted.

Special note: Adding cute slogans to someone else's cartoon or photo does not make it an original work.

We've always nuked copies of other people's software, articles and the like. The creators of cartoons and photographs are just as deserving of that protection.

I know. This has become so ubiquitous online, and seems so harmless, that we didn't think to look at the sources. That oversight needs correcting.

And thanks to the gentleman who reminded me of this.

        Simple work around:

        1. Buy a point and shoot camera.
        2. Have an eye for the wacky.
        3. ???
        4. Profit.

There's enough dumb stuff going on in Orlando that I could probably make my own...

And that is exactly why I bought a new camera a few weeks ago. Now I can post funny pictures all I want because they are MY funny pictures!

            Hokay.

I posted something yesterday that was not my work and I did not have permission to use. That was wrong.

I posted something yesterday that was not my work but I had a license to use because I paid for that license. Nothing wrong with that.

So you may want to modify the policy slightly to include licensing....

I get two hours of sunlight a day on a leash...but we're pulling this off topic! I was probably one of (if not the) biggest perpetrator of this new rule. I'll have to check and see what those meme sites say about sharing their pictures, never really looked at it the same way as scraping other crap since it wasn't used commercially, just to gain a laugh. You learn something new all the time.

I'm amused enough that I immediately thought of Joe before I even opened the thread. Pictures can't top that.

As soon as I read the title of the thread and saw it was from Paul, I pictured Joe crying in the fetal position somewhere.

    ... sad, sad day.

This is why I almost always use Youtube videos instead of images...If the owner of the Youtube video doesn't want it embedded on other sites, it won't embed in the forum.

That one sentence is the subject of copyright law so complex it wouldn't be fair to use it as a law school test question.

Another related issue is hot-linking. Some image owners don't mind hot-linking, and they may even prefer it. Others hate it with a white-hot passion. Those who hate it probably really hate a pic posted on a forum like this, since it's fairly high traffic. If the pic gets posted in a "hot" topic, the site owner could get a chunk of bandwith gobbled up.

I'd think the hot-linking issue would be included in the license... hopefully.

Yep. Especially given that a real-world decision could come down to which judge you got. Fortunately, this isn't a court, and the right to post graphics in the discussion sections here isn't guaranteed.

I, for one, wouldn't care if Allen just turned off inline graphics entirely.

When I post funny pictures in threads, I'm not stealing those pictures, I'm "curating" them. So it's cool.

I figure a debate about avatars is not far behind - there's tons of copyrighted cartoon, movie, etc. images being used for avatars everywhere.

(Personally, I would NEVER use a trademark or company mascot in MY avatar...)

Pinterest's TOS specifically makes it the person posting the images issue because of this very reason.

Ya, but how long can they keep a "hands-off" policy - letting the users police themselves? Eventually 'big brother' gets involved and the site owners cave...

I'm pretty sure Megaupload had the same policy as Pinterest, and you know how that worked out.

I have always tried to grab most of my pics off of Blogger.com, using the image URL from blogger, in order to give some clearance on this issue.

If it is loaded on the blogger server, then bandwidth isn't much of a concern to the Google folks.

But I thought we were talking about copyright / IP concerns, and not bandwidth concerns.

        I suppose it is a double-issue.

Otherwise, they would not be talking about hot-linking.

You are correct. The bandwidth issue is real, but not nearly all that big a thing in these situations. It would be a very rare thread that got enough views to eat up much bandwidth this way.
