Newbie..need advice please!

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum but I've been reading hundreds of posts the past week or so and it's been amazing learning so much about IM from everybody here. I think I want to create a review site that has the capability to review hundreds of products (of course that will take time) under the convenience of just one domain name. I have set up accounts at Clickbank, Joe Bucks, CJ, etc. to get me started with plenty of marketable products. Now it's time to take it to the next level.

My strengths are:

1. I am a good writer. I feel like I can easily write quality reviews on products.

2. I am a hard worker and I have flexible time to invest in developing a review site.

3. I have some money to invest in the project. I really don't want to invest a ton of money because I'm new to this and I realize that I could make a lot of mistakes. I'd rather invest a lot of "sweat" time.

My weaknesses are:

1. I know very little about website design, programming, etc. I will likely have to pay somebody to set things up for me and I don't really even know where to start or what a fair price may be. I sometimes feel like there is SO much information available that it's hard to pinpoint what direction to go and it's also hard to trust anybody because everybody is telling you they have the answers.

2. I am learning about marketing avenues such as PPC, blogs, Yahoo Answers, etc. but I still have much more to learn. I also don't know the slightest thing about SEO and how to optimize a site to get the site on Google for organic traffic.

My questions are:

Is the project to broad or too big? Is it more profitable to focus on one review per product? I'd really rather create a business here and eventually have a top quality site that has hundreds of product reviews. I'd like to have an interactive platform where visitors can submit their own reviews and possibly rate the products.

What revenue streams can be utilized besides the affiliate links? Can Adsense be used? It seems like if you have a quality site promoting/reviewing a product and then there are Google links to click of other products then maybe that compromises the integrity of the review. I'm not sure.

How much would a project like this cost to program and set up? I want quality, not some template that everybody has.

How much income could be generated in a business like this in say, 6 months, 1 year, 3 years? Assume that I do the right things, put the hours in, write quality reviews, etc.

I realize I'm not reinventing the wheel here and there are likely many sites like this but I think this would be a good fit for me.

Thanks so much for the feedback!

    You're on the right track!

But, your project is too broad. Review sites are most effective when 1-3 products are reviewed. When a potential customer is swamped by a lot of choices, they tend not to make one at all.

All you need to spend to set-up a review site is $10 for the domain and $5-10 for hosting. You can easily use existing templates and modify them with your own images, graphics, links, etc.

As for income potential, that depends on many factors: the niche, how targeted your visitors are, how many visitors you get, and more. So it's hard to say for certain.

    Good luck,

Thanks Curtis. What if I had one main domain name and then had landing pages for each product under that main domain like Example Domain Name/MedicusGolfTrainer? I think it would be cool to build a brand name domain name that became a trusted site for reviews. Obviously, this is really big thinking and a lot would have to happen before that dream was realized.

If I blogged about golf for example, I could include a link to the Examplesite/MedicusGolf Trainer page to generate traffic.

What are the pros and cons of this type of strategy?

You are on a good track.

Simple stuff can be used to create your review site (check out my sig, its just a wordpress blog assigned to my domain name) and you can get a professional, easily edited site.

I'm not telling you to stay with wordpress, but it is a fantastic way to get started. Set up your domain name, host it, and use an FTP to upload new plugins, themes, or whatever you need.

There's an SEO theme I use and while I havn't done much with my blog yet (I've been workin' on this one and a few others) it does look a hell of a lot more professional than I can do it.

You can add adsense to your site, and once you have the money to pay for your own site to be made, you can sell ad space to people who want their products to be in front of your visitors.

    Hope that helps!

Your on the right path. Save your self some money and set up a wordpress blog with review plugins. Just google it.

It will be the cheapest and easiest way to pull off what you want.

The quickest and easiest way to set up a site is just set up a Wordpress blog. Most hosts offer it as a one click install. There are so many themes out there to make it look professional. Much easy than creating a website from scratch. Plus it's so easy to update and add your reviews. Wordpress is free. Cost would be hosting, usually starts about $10 a month and a domain for about $10 a year.

Also the search engines usually like blogs, so you don't know have to know too much about SEO, course depends on the theme you choose. You'll just need to do your keyword research and use the right keywords in your posts. I personally wouldn't worry about PPC until you learn more.

I don't see why having many reviews is a bad idea, though it might be better to work on a certian market or niche and review products in that niche.

Being a good writer will be a big plus.

Did I help any? This is the place to ask questions, lots of helpful people.

You guys are awesome. Thanks so much for all the feedback so far. I'm definitely going to check out the WordPress blog idea. So you are saying I can still have my own domain name with that? I don't want a WordPress domain name.

Does the WordPress blog allow for visitor comments, visitor submitted reviews, and a visitor rating system of products?

If this business idea is executed well, how much monthly income is realistic after say 6 months of promoting?

There are two different ways to use wordpress. One is to get a free hosted blog from wordpress.com, but they don't like users marketing or selling, good chance they will kill your blog.

The second option is best, get the free wordpresssoftware from wordpress.org and host it on your own hosting account, that way you can do what you want without restrictions. Also, as I mentioned, many hosting services offer easy click to install wordpress software.

You can set the blog to allow comments or not, totally up to you. If you allow comments, you'll need to monitor it, to keep out the spam.

Hard to say how much you'll make. Depends on how much traffic you get, how the products you promote convert into sales, ect. Too many variables.

Yes you can have your own domain name, and your own wordpress blog. Here is quick outline of how to get that set up.

        1. Go to godaddy or namecheap and register your domain name. should cost around 10 dollars as long as you keep it simple.

        2. Go to bluehost, hostgator, mediatemple or any other major hosting site. Get an account. All of the major host have one click wordpress installs. Install wordpress.

        3. Go and point your name servers to your domain. for example, if i was using mediatemple and godaddy. I would point my domain at godaddy to ns2.mediatemple.net which would then get it setup with mediatemple hosting.

        4. Setup wordpress. Name, tagline, categories and such.

        5. Search google for wordpress review plugins.

        6. Install them and your set.

Start writing review that point to click bank or other affiliates.

Drive traffic to your site. Work hard. and you will make money. A time frame is unrealistic. That's based solely on how much you work.

TAlking more on what Ron said, there is the likely hood of spam. But there are plugins you can add to your blog to keep spam and you having to find it to a minimum. Just look around wordpress.org and make sure there aren't any tools that you know you can use often and use well.
