Scumbag Pinterest Tactic - How Did They Do This?

Hi Warriors!

I figure someone has to be teaching this somewhere, so maybe y'all will know so I can then go prevent it.

I have a Pinterest account, lots of boards.

I log in there to Pin something and there's a new board called "all about the cash."

It's all lower case. First sign it's not me. There is one Pin to it - some stupid "work at home" ad. And there are two other boards titled "career" and "wishlist" - both lower case. These two didn't have pins yet - and I never create boards until I have something to pin there.

I didn't create these.

So was it a simple hack or something where marketers have figured out how to post pins to other people's account that I don't know about?

Tiff

I adore pinterest and have more boards and pins than a normal person should! Double check your settings and make sure your boards are all set so that you are the only person who can pin to them -- that may be the problem

I went into Settings but I don't see that option at all. Is it located somewhere else?

      I see:

      Email
      Notifications
      Password
      Language
      First Name
      Last Name
      Username
      Gender
      About
      Location
      Website
      Image
      Facebook
      Twitter
      Hide
      Deactivate

If there's something else, I don't have it.

Now on each individual BOARD, I have it set that ONLY I can post to it.

But this person actually created 3 new board on my account and pinned something to one of them.

      Creepy.

Ah just now looked at my "Activity" and it shows I "Liked" someone's pin 14 hours ago. Problem is, I wasn't on Pinterest 14 hours ago. I just Unliked them all and left a note about it. Guess I'll just change my password?

    Hello Tiff,

Yes, changing your password is the best thing you can do for now while you observe if that will make a difference. Make sure that your new password is not so similar to what you currently have.

Were they Interactive Boards? I know a few groups I'm in have boards set up where anyone invited to the board can post to it. The creator just needs to go in and add people to the Interactive Board.

    Hi Tiff.

This happened to me as well but I tried a little something that seems to have worked. Had spammy boards popping up all over but they did not realize that with them came the emails announcements.
So I created a board specifically for those spammers and described it as "designed to promote Pinterest spam...spam my account and I'll post your name to the board..."make my day".
Interesting that nobody took me up on it - no more Pinterest spam boards showing up.

I'd like to know how this happens too.

A few weeks ago this happened to me. I found out about it because I received an email notification. Logged in to Pinterest and there were 3 boards that I had not created so I deleted them.

Now on seeing this thread I just logged in again and there are 6 of these scammy boards so I deleted them and then changed my password.

Hopefully that solves the problem but Pinterest really needs a setting that says who can create boards. (I looked and couldn't find one either).

I don't know - but when you clicked on Tiffany Dow's boards, it showed this **** and it looks like I am the one creating and promoting it! Plus, it looked like I had pinned something - and I hadn't.

Someone else just pointed out 2 accounts that are using my name and picture.

So I sent those in as abuse.

            Hi Tiff,

Remember this happened and I believe this is still happening in Facebook. I still remember those days when all my FB friends told me that I was sending them nasty and adult-related posts, images, and things like that, when in fact, I don't even remember my Facebook password. The bad guys who are doing this on Facebook might (must) be the same bad guys on Pinterest.

            • Hi Tiffany, that problem happened also to me.
A few days ago I've found a new board about "World", filled with around 2,800 images (all beautiful). Anyway, I deleted it.

That doesn't depends on password, because every week I tried to change it, to discover new boards... and new boards (sometimes filled and other times empy.)
Sometimes the invites come to my email, and I simply throw them in the bin, but sometimes I found new boards I never created.

Anyway, Pinterest is too useful for me to be left
So I will be sure to close all that useless spammy boards.

              See you soon,

Isn't breaking into someone's account or impersonating someone a crime?

Don't worry Tiff, just like that show "I (almost) Got Away With It," the criminal always gets caught in the end. Just let them leave a trail and more evidence. Greed will bring him/her down.

The more popular the site like Pinterest or Facebook or the application like WordPress is, the more vulnerable it is to hackers. I closed my Facebook account because (I think) the place is creepy, despite it being a goldmine.

And after 6 years of being a WordPress advocate, contributor, consultant, I plan on ditching WordPress because I'm fed up of plugging up security holes and continually monitoring the sites for breaches. Seriously.

I find it is far better not to follow the crowd online. Fly under the radar, use quality software that's not the mainstream stuff, so everybody and his brother isn't trying to hack it, and away you go.

I would definitely mix up the passwords often on those sites too. It doesn't hurt.

Tiffany, just in case you might have a keylogger or any Trojan on your machine, might I suggest you install Malwarebytes, if you don't have it already? It will clean your machine, just in case that's how they got into your Pinterest account.

      stay safe.

Well Jeez, yesterday I got two emails saying Tonia Carruth and Gena Torba "liked" my pin on i love working from home. Thing is, even though I picked up a pinterest account, I have not done a thing with it - no boards, no pinning, nothing.

I did go look at the board (It's the only thing there) and then when I looked at Tonia's activity I can see everything there is the same kind of affiliate spammy junk.

But someone here also mentioned Facebook, and that reminded me that when I was looking at my timeline yesterday, even before I noticed the emails, there were two posts saying that I liked i love working from home.

At the time I didn't know where they came from so I deleted them and marked one as spam. That brought up the question box asking me if I wanted to de-authorize ping.fm from posting to my account. Since I don't remember giving them authorization - and I'm pretty careful about that kind of thing- I made sure it was turned off. I then posted an apology to my followers.

So now I'm thinking it might be useful to check out the connection with ping.fm

BTW the person who I supposed pinned from is Chelsea Fallon-Hammond. Her profile, activities and pins look almost exactly like Tonia's.

        Hello Tiffany,

Malwarebytes does not provide real-time protection. It's good only for 'on-demand' purposes. Meaning, it does not catch malwares that are trying to get into your system. Try ESET Scanner or Microsoft Security Essentials. The latter is for free.

I had someone in my Pinterest Facebook group mention that his account got hacked this week. When I did a search online about it, I noticed that people started mentioning this particular hack a few months ago, but there was no information on what was really going on with it.

It seems like Pinterest itself has been breached somehow. I guess time will tell what's really going on behind the scenes with this... There have been so many data breaches of late... (LinkedIn, eHarmony, Last.fm, Global Payments, etc.), there's no telling what Pinterest security vulnerability has been exploited by hackers.

I don't see myself abandoning Pinterest just yet - because of this particular hack - that would be like me moving out of my house, that's in a perfectly good neighborhood ... because houses get broken into. There is no perfect world... at the moment. I'm just going to take the necessary precautions and be aware and alert - like we have to do with everything else.

Yep - the bottom dwellers are in full flow on Pinterest - I am getting the same problem the main link being a work from home spam site that looks like a major news site - it isn't - so if you click on one of those links - get off it because it is just some scam site.

Thing is I use a password that is created specifically so it is very difficult to be hacked - so I guess either the technology they use is exceptional - or more likely in my opinion there is a hole in Pinterest's security somewhere - worrying because I have found Pinterest to be a great source of traffic to my sites, and I only have three pins thus far, and already two password changes.

But as the legendary Willie Crawford ( Hi Willie) pointed out - it means that Pinterest has certainly arrived in a big way.

Thank you for bringing this to light, Tiffany. The same thing happened to me and I decided to revoke access from all of my accounts. This did happen in the past, well something similar with my twitter account and it has well over 20,000 followers. Imagine building a base of loyal followers only to have some spammer and hacker having access to that list with little work of their own. It is quite troubling, but I feel that if enough people state their frustrations, Pinterest will improve their security in the future.

I checked back in today after changing my password yesterday and no new boards were created but I noticed that that I was following people that I did not knowingly follow so that is something else you should check.

Guess I better login more often than I have been. I also disconnected Twitter in case that was the breach point but no weird tweets or following strange people so I don't think that was the cause.

Well goodness!! I have 2 NEW people who LIKE pins I never made on boards I've never even created!!

Sarah 'Toyzan' Piazza liked your pin coolest 2012 jobs
Kathy Jones liked your pin coolest 2012 jobs

...AND that's without me DOING ANYTHING!! OMG - I think I've stumbled on what everyone else has been offering in all those emails I keep getting ... All I did was join, and I have 4 likes, and 8 boards in the "make money" niche with 4 or 5 pins!! and I NEVER HAD TO DO A SINGLE THING !!!

Tiff - This is a true "set it and forget it" system! Why didn't you let us in on this earlier???!!

    ROFLMAO

Seriously - I marked one pin as spam, then marked another as other and said it was spam and then finally I marked the last one as other & said it was spam and that I had never even created a board. Then I deleted all the 8 or 9 money-making oriented boards and changed my password. Before I got rid of everything I did manage to copy down the sites the pins went to (I did put a space in front of the .com):

If anyone knows anything else to do (since I'm new to pinterest and I really don't know anything about how to use it yet), feel free. I've included all the accounts, etc. in this and the previous post.

BTW just noticed those are all domains from Belgium - I didn't share it with pinterest, but will see if there's a way.

Also it seems I can't get back into my space on the pinterest - it keeps trying to build the feed...

I don't use Pinterest but I've had accounts hacked before and I hate it when someone uses my name to post. Here are some posts I found that I thought might be helpful if you're facing this problem:

    1. Here's a post from back in March detailing a hacking problem in Pinterest. Apparently there's even a photo of spam offers on a Pinterest engineer's board (Source):

My initial thought this afternoon was that someone could be using a brute force attack to figure out passwords, but based on my own experience and the vast nature of the pins, it looks increasing likely that someone has hacked Pinterest and figure out how to pin to a large number of people’s boards. Even a Pinterest engineer has two spam offers on his board as I write this.
    2. Another post detailing the latest spam problems in July 2012, with photos of some of the offending items pinned (Source):

It is unclear how hackers are getting access to Pinterest accounts, but in the last three days there has been a number of signs that hacking is again becoming a problem on Pinterest.

Traffic to my post on the March hacking of Pinterest has increased considerably starting on July 5th, and you can find a number of people on Twitter complaining about being hacked.
    3. And here's a post that tells you how to know if you've been hacked and what to do about it. As has been mentioned already, changing the password appears to solve the problem (Source):

    What you can do

    Delete the pin & board
    Change your password
    Contact Pinterest.
If you see it in your stream you can report it as spam 1
Check your boards often since some are saying they keep reappearing
    BeCAREful when repinning
Check the original source to find out what really is being pinned

If I am "following" someone on Pinterest and want to "repin" I check it out
first to see what kind of page the "Pin" originates from. More than once
I have clicked on someones really cool "Pin" only to have it go to a shady site. Yeah it stinks and is an extra step....hopefully it helps keep things a little more secure(?)!--Be well.

Thanks for the warning. I checked mine but found no new unwanted boards. I'm changing the password now just to be sure.

Hmm seems as though Pinterest has a vulnerability. Hopefully they sort it out soon.

I just changed my password after having numerous posts show up. If this does not get fixed, well I will have to delete my account. I guess it is not really as important and I will not be using the embed feature. I did call the hacker's host and they put it through their security department, but then this individual just did domain forwarding to another very scammy site telling me how somebody in my home town made loads of money yada yada. Right now, I have a ticket in with Pinterest and if they do not fix it, well, I will have to sit that one out. I have yet to get enough traffic from there to make it worth my time and seem to be getting tons of traffic from sources that I know and trust.

Guess they have to get this sorted out quickly.

I have the same problem. Not only have I been spammed and scammed, my favourite board, along with several dozen pins has been deleted.

I have changed my password and disconnected from Facebook and Twitter. I also managed to delete all but one of the fake boards. It has 2 pins. The work-around to delete the 2 pins and get rid of the board does not work. All I get is a 404, page can't be found. There seems to be nothing I can do to get rid of that board.

Sure hope someone comes up with a solution. Otherwise my next move will be to get rid of Pinterest. That would be a little 'heartbreak' since I have put a lot of work into it.

Having been doing work on and off in web security for the last 10 years, I've seen this with every social startup that's hit it big.

Phishers see a new community of people that don't know how easily they are preyed upon. Basically you want to use a COMPLETELY different password on ANY new social media site.

ALWAYS check the url bar on your browser before you put in any user information. Phishers CANNOT spoof that, unless they somehow got you to install their own custom made browser.

As a general rule just always be careful with your user information. Have several different passwords and usernames, especially for new social sites because they can be targets for all types of potential security breachs. It could be the case that pinterest had a serious cross site scripting vulnerability in which case, it was extremely easy for a hacker to get some passwords.

Hopefully they do get it together if it's a problem on their end, I've heard from some of my friends who have friends in the black hat world that lots of phished pinterest accounts are being sold for exactly what happened to your account.

So be safe online, and keep all those usernames and passwords to yourself!

    Tiff,

Shared your frustration. The internet world is also full of Good and Evil. When there is Good, it will attract Evil. This is the Tao of Yin and Yang.

I had the same problem... Being that Pinterest is still fairly new, I think someone figured out a way to break through their security measures and post on other people's profiles...

I had to go through and delete boards too...

This was happening when I wasn't using pinterest though. I would login and see tons of new pins.

Eventually I changed my PW and I think the issue ceased after that

Give it enough time and someone will always try to figure out a way to take advantage of someone elses hard work...it may not have hurt you (Per se) but still hate to see this kind of activity.

This kind of stuff makes the rest of us look bad to the average joe!

Best of luck stopping it...for good!
