Screencast Software For Making Videos

I've messed around with half a dozen or so screencast tools over the years and just wanted to recommend Screencast-o-Matic to you all as a great way to create high qualify screencasts.

I'm using it now to create some tutorials for a forthcoming course/ebook thing and it's super simple.

$15 per year with editing, scripts tools, HD output - all the good stuff. Available here:

I'm not an affiliate and I don't own the company or anything. I just thought that if you can't afford Camtasia but are looking for something that works really well, you may like this.

  • I've checked this out before and yes it is very simple to use and definitely a good alternative if you can't afford Camtasia Studio.

There is also a free version of Screencast-o-Matic but it keeps the branding on your videos if you choose that option
  • Yep, Screen cast o Matic is a great site/service. I used it to make a video of AW Stats walkthrough for a site I was selling. Worked perfectly.
  • For those who have a Mac take a look at screenflow I use it for years it's the best! It's just amazing (no I don't sell it)
  • You can also do free screencasts using Google + Hangouts
  • Yup, for me $99 for ScreenFlow (mac) was the best video editing software I ever invested in. Beautiful software.
  • Another strong vote here for Screenflow for the Mac. Once you understand the differences between it and Camtasia and how to work them to your advantage, it is superb.

An example of a key difference is that with Screenflow, you always record the full screen and then manipulate what you actually want to appear in your final video later, rather than choosing the section of the screen to record in advance as you do with Camtasia.
