What is an "Entrepreneur"? Do you fit in this Category?

Hi Guys,
I recently read a definition of entrepreneurship that I wanted to share with you:
"Entrepreneurship is to live a few years of your life like most people won't, to be able to live the rest of your life like most people can't."
As any other form of entrepreneurship, the internet one perfectly fits into this definition. Even though this may not be the dictionary one, I am sure many of us relate to this definition.

    The word entrepreneur covers a lot of ground. It means someone who organizes, manages, and assumes the risks of a business. Entrepreneurship often describes a small business whose owner starts up a company i.e. a plumbing supply store, a restaurant, a consulting firm. In the U.S. 5.7 million companies with fewer than 100 employees make up 99.5% of all businesses. These small businesses are the backbone of American capitalism. But small businesses startups have very different objectives than scalable startups like TranStream Global. Their primary goal is a predictable revenue stream for the owner, with reasonable risk and reasonable effort and without the need to bring in world-class engineers and managers.

    The Internet has created a series of new and innovative business models. Herein lies the confusion; not every business on the web can scale big. While the Internet has enabled scalable Internet startups like Google and Facebook, it has also created a much, much larger class of web-based small businesses that can’t or won’t scale to a large company. Some are in small markets, some are run by founders who don’t want to scale or can’t raise the capital, or acquire the team. This is not the model for TranStream Global.

    Breadth of an entrepreneurs’ vision
    Founders’ personal goals
    Size of the target market
    Customer and Agile development to find the business model

      I think at this moment, I'm not an entrepreneur. I just started my very first internet startup venture which so far has not been so bad, but I still feel i have lots to learn before I can sell this site and move on to a bigger project.

      Technically speaking, you only become an "Entrepreneur" once you succeed .

        Henri Ford, Thomas Edison, Abe Lincoln...

        These are just a few of the Entrepreneurs I know who were known as Entrepreneurs long before their successes. They failed many times before they succeeded.

        I love the saying in the post above....it says it all.

    I worked for a billionaire once; and the following was engraved in a sterling silver tray that was given to him as a gift from the founders of an investment firm. It's by far the best definition I've come across of what an Entrepreneur is:

    "The Entrepreneur; as a creator of the new and a destroyer of the old, is constantly in conflict with convention.

    He inhabits a world where belief precedes results, and where the best possibilities are usually invisible to others.

    His world is dominated by denial, rejection, difficulty and doubt. And although as an innovator, he is unceasingly imitated when successful, he always remains an outsider to the establishment.

    He is usually found disturbing and irritating, and even unemployable."

    I like to believe we are all entrepreneurs at heart and all want to be successful, yet some people are willing to sacrifice while others will remain imprisoned to their dreams forever.

    I believe peoples dreams will keep them paralyzed more than reality ever could. You set high expectations, you magnify failure that much more everytime you fail.

    So keep your dreams reasonable, keep your expectations that much more reasonable, and maybe you'll reach the success you want some day.

      Thanks, JaggyJay, great quote!

      I believe I am 'entrepreneurial", but NOT an "entrepreneur" in the classic or most commonly-understood sense.

      When most people think "entrepreneur" they think of someone who develops a startup into a going entity and pushes it through to its conclusion - whether that means eventually selling the company or staying on as its actual or perceived leader.

      Being that my main goal is freedom of time, I have no interest in building a large company.

      That seems like way too much work, risk and responsibility...

      The only thing I might change to the definition given in the first post, is that every millionaire entrepreneur I know, myself included, isn't working hard for a few years so they can stop. They keep at it. It's in their blood.
      Hurrying up to quit isn't what Enrepreneurs are made of.

      Something I hear from people alot is 'If I had a million dollars, I would..." and then they talk about travel, giving it away to relatives, buying boats....
      But that's all wrong. Entrepreneurs love what they are doing. Do it for a few years so you can quit? Never.

      The people that are thinking about working hard a few years in a business so that they can live like a king without working their business, don't start at all. At least that is my experience. These people are not Entrepreneurs...they are Opportunity Seekers.

      If you are buing your 50th program hoping IT will make you rich, when you have given up on the first 49 aftewr 6 hours...you are not an entrpreneur. You are an Opportunity Seeker.

      Every person I know as a successful entrepreneur has things in common;
      This may be enlightening.
      Most sold something or worked as kids, paper routes, selling something door-to-door, lemonade stands, that sort of thing.
      Most sold something as a young adult; vacuum cleaners, encyclopedias (a lost vocation), magazines...something.
      Most are immune to criticism. They are to busy working.

      If they are in business now, they work harder than any employee they have. Some have lots of employees, and some get sick at the idea of anyone else working with them.
      They love what they do, and think about it on vacations, when visiting relatives, and after they get home. They work is also their main hobby.

      They would never think of quitting. A real entrepreneur is someone that only leaves their business 1) to immediately start another business... or 2) because they are dragged out kicking and screaming. 3) because of very poor health.

      Some people reading this will know exactly what I mean.

      By the way, you can be a true entrepreneur without a large company, or a company at all.
      Do you love what you do? Is it making you alot of money? Are you going to be better at it next month? Do you think about it while you are eating? Are you looking forward to tomorrow?
      Are you right now...working hard?
      You have the bug.

    My definition of an entrepreneur is this, a person who strives on something, never quit on trying and has live a life worth living.

    I am proud to say I am an entrepreneur as per my own definition.
