Hello all,
In another thread I've posted asking for help due to my situation, many people mentioned having a "mentor" or coaching. That I'm pretty new to the whole IM marketing community, I'm not sure what this entails or involves.

Just looking for more information about it that really hoping to have some direction with the time and money I've spent online marketing.

My understanding of a mentor is someone who is already successful and shows you the ropes and keeps you working and motivated. I've just finished a short course with Dean Holland that was sort of mentoring for a short period but I'd love to get into the position I could afford more in depth and prolonged mentoring as I've accomplished more in the last few weeks than at any time previously.

      Hi Jay,

Help me out - which direction within IM are you looking to succeed at?

      * Affiliate marketing
      * Info-Product marketing (your own digital product)
      * Amazon Kindle eBooks
      * Offline marketing (helping small businesses)
      * eBay selling
      * Standard eCommerce website

I can point you in some good directions, but would need to know specifics.

Well that's what the other thread is about actually, trying to figure out what way to go, that was very low cost that pretty much can't afford much investment after not making any profits for the past 6 months. A lot of people recommending getting a mentor, but no one elaborated .

Out of that list, affiliate marketing is the only one that I have any experience with at all (Not counting eBay, but I'm done with them). Most recommendations I've gotten so far has just been "build a list".

I've already attempted that and failed miserably, plus no longer have the funds to invest in an autoresponder (already have had AWeber and GetResponse in the past)

Don't even think about making money online.

Go to Amazon and buy the $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau and decide what type of business you want to build.

Something you know enough about to build a proper business which provides value, but also something in which you will have a product to sell (affiliate or not).

Now decide how you can use the Internet to build that business.

Not really what I'm looking for at the moment. Have a degree in business, so from the reviews it sounds like it's going to contain things I already know. Possibly in the future it'd be worth picking up for a read.

To get a top mentor you will need to spend for monthly coaching. All the information is online on how to make money from internet marketing.

I feel you are like I was several years ago....Spending time and money on learning how to make money online other than actually putting in the effort doing it.

It is really simple if you are willing to put in the hard work. Pick a niche/subject, pair it up to a high paying affiliate offer and then create content.....lots of content!

Where most go wrong is thinking they will make a few sites that make them rich, this is possible but not the norm! If you made a website that makes $1 a month every month, how many would you make?

people who had great success with IM wont have time coaching others.
imo you better learn the basics and then polish your skills over time.

these things should be taught in school now.

      Hi Jay,

Sounds like you're in a tough position.

Learning Internet Marketing takes time - there's a learning curve - and it also takes money. (not nearly as much as traditional business, of course, but around $50 to $100 a mo. to start with for hosting, autoresponder, and other ancillary expenses)

It is the rare bird who can come in here and hit it out of the park, immediately, without having paid some dues in terms of trial and error or just flat-out cash expended.

This might sound harsh, but if you are not in a position to afford an autoresponder, (did I read this correctly?) then you should seriously be looking at something other than Affiliate Marketing or IM (at least in the short term) as a way to make an income. I think most seasoned Affiliate Marketers would agree with me here.

And, although it sounds like you've sworn off of eBay, I believe that it is one of the easiest ways to get your feet wet in the world of online marketing and develop an online income.

And, you could sell other people's products / items (on consignment) for companies / individuals without any investment on your part, since your consignor will provide the product and you charge a commission off the top.

The reason I believe eBay is the best way to get started is because eBay provides the TRAFFIC and the CUSTOMERS - two things you are fighting tooth and nail to get as a beginning affiliate / internet marketer.

In the IM world, you will either have to pay for your traffic / customers in cash or in sweat, (time / work invested to generate free traffic) but your customers don't come cheap, either way.

The other way to go is to be an offline marketer, but that requires a whole 'nother set of skills, including salesmanship, which not many people possess naturally.

As far as finding a Mentor.

Mentors can be either paid or free, but you will typically get what you "pay" for.

If you can't afford a mentor, then I would definitely recommend joining the War Room (on this forum) and getting your WSOs for free (many War Room members, including myself, give away our WSOs to members on that forum.)

And continue to do what you're doing here - ask tons of questions.

When I first got started here (in 2001) I was creating my very first eBook. (Beyond eBay)

I didn't know what FTP was, I didn't know how to build a website, I didn't know what format to put my eBook in, I didn't know which autoresponder to use.

      I didn't know JACK!

But every time I had a question, I came here and got some great answers.

The help I got here was extremely valuable to me and that's one of the reasons I plan to help others the way Veteran Warriors helped me.

My eBay teaching business was eventually catapulted to a National Infomercial that ran for 11 years - but it all started here on the Warrior Forum.

BUT, that success took lots of time, lots of learning, lots of expenses and lots of sacrifice to get there.

While I didn't have / get a mentor, I have self-mentored through books, the Warrior Forum, Seminars, Webinars, etc. and it has worked out great. But it took time and a lot of trial and error.

Had I had a mentor, I now know that I would've cut that learning curve by thousands of percent!

I wish you success Jay, and please know that this post is meant to speak the truth rather than try to sugar coat the truth for you.

Thanks Dave. I'm not exactly new and have done a lot of trial and error with different methods trying to find one I remotely enjoyed doing and was profitable.

I've been trying to break into IM since around last October or so. Made about a few hundred with Clickbank as an affiliate earlier on this year, and attempted to expand unsuccessfully, which ended up going through all the money.

And yes, that is correct about affording an Autoresponder. In a pretty bad personal situation recently. I was laid off of work last summer and haven't been able to find employment since that would work around my full time class schedule during the Fall and Spring. Currently stuck home without transportation for the most part, which makes it even more difficult. To be completely honest and transparent, I can't really invest anymore that there's less than $2 left in the bank.

I don't believe eBay is an option for me anymore. I had some issues with buyers disputing items and cleaning out my PayPal account, which didn't allow me to pay my fees. Account has been suspended since. Also the lack of investment for inventory if I could get around the first issue.

      That is a tough situation.

The next idea might be offline marketing to local businesses.

But even that form of business will probably cost you something, unless you can get paid up front.

In this case, I would focus on generating some website-building gigs. You don't necessarily have to build the site. (if you're not up to speed on that) You can have someone on Fiverr build it for you / your clients. (or check the Warrior Classifieds for a web-building partner - someone who will pay you a commission to generate sales)

You might check out Fiverr to see which other "offline" gigs you can sell to your local market and just mark them up.

Another idea is to search the local classifieds for P/T "social media" jobs which will allow you to get paid to further your IM knowledge / experience on someone else's dime.

It's pretty hard to start with no money, but not impossible.

If you've never done sales, the offline thing will require getting out of your comfort zone, but that's what success requires anyway.

      Hope this helps, Jay!

I might check into the local market opportunities. I've built several websites, just none of them successful for me, WordPress seems to make things rather easy though. The only issue besides trying to find clients without any previous experience would be having to do all business over the phone, that no transportation for any face-to-face meetings.

  • I sell mentoring from time to time, it's a small market in IM less then 1% of people will ever pay for mentoring, just my observation. As for hiring a mentor I like to look for someone who has my style and best was is to watch their presentation first before approaching them.

Over the past 2 years, I've helped facilitate 20 in-person mentorship experiences-- the hardest part about having a mentor is that you need to put in a ton of work in order to reap the benefits. Successful people won't consistently help you unless you provide them with some value, and that generally comes in the form of you doing a lot of work for them (there are other ways, like sharing interests, and hanging out over a 3rd type and shared interest) but generally it'll come from you doing hard work for them. It's worth it. Check out Charlie Hoehn's video about the topic, it's one of the best things on the web:

I would be remiss if I didn't mention my own in-person training seminars. They kick ass and are absolutely the cheapest way on the planet to get the kind of guidance you are asking about :

IM is so broad ... there are many different ways to make money online and many different types of businesses or services that can be offered. It would probably serve you well to do some reading, maybe even in the War Room and get an idea of where you want to focus your energy before spending any money on a mentor. Just like there are different types of IM businesses, there are different types of mentors.

Do you want a CPA mentor or a PPC mentor or an affiliate marketing mentor. Maybe a web flipping mentor, etc. It goes on and on. That's why it's better for you if you've done some research and get a feel for what you would be interested in doing.

most people are nowhere near ready for coaching.

Meaning, you can spend 100 dollars or 10,000 dollars on coaching,, but it all means nothing if from the start you are not willing to put the hard yards in a make a real go of it.

    "I can't."

    "I won't."

    "I'm not..."

    "I haven't."

    "I might."

Yeah, I think we've pinpointed the problem.

You don't need a mentor, you need to get up and dust yourself off. You're in a tough spot, and that sucks, but your attitude determines what will happen to you from this point forward.

I sent an add request on Skype a few days ago (made it clear who I was and why I contacted you), but no response.

You can wallow in your self-pity and watch things get even worse, or you take responsibility for yourself and turn this thing around. Nobody is coming to rescue you, so you need to stop thinking that there is a knight in shining armor who will make everything okay.

You have a lot going for you, and I'm willing to help. BUT...you must take some positive action right now. Let go of the negativity, the excuses, and the wishy-washy stuff; it's only making things worse.

If you have 90 minutes to spare, then you have to watch this:

Motivate Yourself (Must Watch!) - YouTube

It may seem a bit dry, but take notes as you listen, and you will be amazed at how your thinking improves.

    All the best,
