HELP!! Who's responsibility is it to transfer a website after the auction??

Hi warriors. I'm new to selling websites. My first auction went smoothly. I gave the buyer my wordpress log in details and pushed the domain to him. He took care of the rest on his end. Positive feedback for both of us

But after my most recent sale, the buyer wants me to set everything up. He said he'd give me his cpanel details.

I never mentioned anything about transferring the website in the auction. I just said I'd push the domain to their GoDaddy account.

I don't want bad feedback as it's only my 2nd sale. I could always watch a YouTube video and figure it out but I don't want to screw it up.

So my question is..

Is it really my responsibility?? What do you experienced buyers and sellers think??

Thanks in advance!

  • This is a tough one.

Did your listing explicitly state that you would only push the domain? My guess is that you mentioned you would push the domain, but not that you would only push it.

I believe it is your responsibility to push it and nothing more.

    However...

You can use this incident as a learning tool.

    Here is my suggestion.

Go ahead and learn how to do all of these things to set it up for him, and do it for free. Your payment will come in the form of learning a new skill.

In future listings you can mention that you will push the domain for free, or set it up for the buyer for an extra $97 (or whatever you want to get for it). Some buyers will pay for it because they don't want the hassle.

    So...

    1. Learn how to do it.
    2. Do it for free, this time.
    3. Modify future listings to include it as an option.
    4. Make more money from each future sale.

You will get the positive feedback from your current customer, learn a skill, and profit in the future.

    All the best,
    Michael

    • Thanks Joel That could happen! I'd love to be able to do it but if things go wrong I'll be running to fiverr
  • I would say that just find someone experienced at doing these transfers on fiverr and that will solve the problem for you. That's what i've done on flippa in a similar scenario from memory and it's not too costly financially or in terms of risk of messing it up.
I accept i haven't really answered your question but i think i have found a simple solution to it.

  • Wow thanks Michael! I hadn't thought of making some extra money from it.
You're absolutely right. I said "push" not "only push"

Should I tell him about my lack of experience. "I'll set everything up for you but this is my first time doing it so I can't guarantee anything.." Something like that.. Or just go with it and be confident that I'll do it properly?

    Thanks!!

  • I would say since you did not state you would transfer everything over I would say it is not your responsibility. You could offer to charge a small fee to do it for him. On the other hand, to build a good customer profile it might be a good option to just move it for him. Some web hosts will also move things, you could have him ask his web host and see what they say. Just go with it and be confident as you mentioned above.

  • I think if you don't want to do the setup for people then you need to state that in big bold letters in your sales letter or when communicating with the buyer, otherwise they are going to assume that you will do it.

Unless you are selling to web savvy buyers (which most are not) then you will rarely get a buyer that knows how to do the transfer themselves.

If you plan to sell new sites to newbies then you will find most of your buyers have no clue on how to do the setup so you're better off just resigning yourself to the fact that you will have to do it yourself (or hire someone to do it for you).

If you plan to do it a lot, you should just get one of the cloners like backup buddy or wptwin or FlipMeClone. I find FlipMeClone to be the easiest and fastest to use myself.

  • Thanks for that Lee
I'm definitely considering getting a plugin for future sales. But for the time being I've already pushed the domain and have the database and files zipped up so I guess I'll be going through with the manual transfer.
