How I Get My Best Ideas...

One thing that I've noticed is that my best ideas never come to me in front of my PC, or reading an ebook or scouring the latest marketing courses. Those all give great input...but it's so easy to become an info-addict that we jump from one thing to another and never take advantage of our mind's natural process.

The key is to get away from your computer, your business...everything, at the very least one day per week.

What I do is schedule play time. I treat that relaxation as deadly serious as a business meeting. My scheduled relaxation is not replaced except by emergency.

Something amazing happens when you not only give yourself permission to relax...but actually require it.

For most of us, especially if we're struggling, there seems to be an immense guilt when we aren't trying to work on our businesses. I had this feeling a lot when I was first starting out. Anytime I tried to take a walk with my wife, or relax and read a book or just "chill" I would get this nagging feeling like I should be doing "something". I sure as hell didn't know what...but man, how could I be successful if I wasn't working? Nevermind that I had no idea what I was doing...I couldn't have started a fire in a gunpowder factory at that point. But there was always this guilt there...my mind never got a rest.

It's when the mind is at rest when the subconcious gets a chance to do its thing. Ideas and problems and opportunities that seemed so confusing before can become clear.

If you're not giving yourself "play" time then you'll probably be amazed at how much more productive you are when you finally do. Schedule an entire day off from work, no computer.

With this planned relaxation you don't have any nagging guilt or "I should be doing..." lingering about because you have given yourself permission to relax, to enjoy, to rest.

You just might be surprised at the great ideas you come up with when you "turn off" your business brain for awhile.

lmao this exact thing happened to me the other day-

I was relaxing and watching T.V. when out of nowhere an idea popped right into my head, so I busted out a notebook and wrote it down =)

Never know when the great ideas strike.

Ideas come to me when reading, playing, walking and even during sleep. This is the reason I carry my notebook every where I go

Always have a notebook or some king of device to record your ideas. In my car I keep a pen and paper and my phone is able to act as a voice recorder.

This is very true, however I need to remember the most crucial part, actually buying a notebook and keeping it with me! I have had a few brainstorms through my life, when I first think about it my mind wanders off into a trail of even better ideas. Sadly though not writing them down at the time means they are usually lost forever

        Dont forget the notepads people!

Ideas normally come to me all the time whether I am working online or traveling or exercising. And can you believe it that I often wake up suddenly with an idea?

Most of the Worlds best entrepreneurs carry a note book with them.
Richard Branson is famous for this. Of course I have one, and I have
a digital Dictaphone too, for when I'm driving etc.

Most of my best ideas have occurred to me first thing in the morning,
just as I'm waking up. The subconscious is surly a powerful tool.

I consciously make an effort to do the same thing, but at night when laying down to go to sleep.

I let my subconscious drift in that state between being fully "awake" and in a deep sleep. Doesn't happen always, but sometimes the best thoughts go through my mind at that time.

If did that, I'd never sleep. Some of my most profitable have happened
when nodding off, making me stay up all night and testing the ideas. I
remember once, having an ideas just as I was going to bed.. couldn't sleep
because of it, got up, did my testing, and having a fully working product
before breakfast. I made tens of thousands of $ over the years on the
        back of that idea.

The person who said he got his best ideas round at his ex's reminded me that I was meant to have rung mine. Then I read John's comment.

I think I've stopped laughing sufficiently enough to be able to type in a straight line now.

My best ideas used to come to me whenever I was supervising my sons tidying their room. They've left home and are cheerfully disorganizing pastures new now, so I'm reduced to gazing in an uninspired fashion into my daughters' room and wishing I'd brought them up to be more slobby

That is great! and I totally agree!

I would go so far as to try meditating. Even if it is just 5 minutes per day. It will make a world of difference.

    Andy,

Your right. Generating the ideas is the easy part. Implementing and bringing them to reality is the kicker. I'll bet a couple thousand people "thought of the electric light bulb" but only one man perservered until he "saw the light bulb".

I use a voice recorder when I walk my dog. It's surprising to me how quickly my articles get written after coming up with ideas while walking the dog. What's even more surprising is how often the ideas come the more I write. Listening to your muse. That's key I think.

I get great ideas when I'm not thinking - when I'm in a relaxed state of mind, that's when they hit me! When I concentrate on something, I never succeed on finding a solution.

Excellent post! I can definitely relate. The best idea's come to me while I'm not online...Just living life, whether it be outside or inside, but not by the computer...idea's just flow to me thinking about other things.

Some great ideas, I always look to the media and see what the current trends are in magazines and the news as they always have brilliant ideas on what is currently being marketed to a mass audience. Sometimes they seemingly dictate what will be popular in a few months, so its always a good source.

    Lol.
It comes kind of randomly for me.
Like last week I was asleep and i was having a dream where I ran into a room that had a lot of spiders covering the walls and ceiling. Yeah sounds pretty scary, eh?
But then they all joined together into one big spider and it told me something which became an idea.
Btw i don't do drugs so why I had a dream like that I have no idea.

What a helpful reminder. In the past, I've noticed more ideas come to me when I take time out for myself. That's why I've made a pact with myself to go on a road trip every other week to just get out and enjoy myself.

When I take time out for myself, I feel much more refreshed and more eager to work.

This was such a great idea ... to create a thread about how people get great ideas.

So I have to ask, how did you get THIS great idea ?

For me, I try to keep a pen and paper with me because I usually get my ideas when I'm away from the computer. Like while shopping, or at a restaurant.

This is a great thread. I, too, get ideas when I'm away from the computer.

I get my very best ideas while in the shower. I have yet to find a waterproof pad and pen with which to record them though.

I'd also have to add that when I'm struggling with a problem on the computer, I will spend way too much time bashing my forehead against the screen while trying to figure it out. Then when I step away in utter frustration and go walk the dog.... wah lah... the answer comes easy. I have to step away from the forest to really see the trees.

Thank you . I really needed to read that. Although I already believed it to be true I find myself violating the rules and working way too much. My problem is that I simply do not have much time to work on IM stuff. So I need to accept it and just work smart instead of giving up sleep and relaxation time.

    Great post LB!

    So very true.

I was at a seminar recently and some of the top guys there (the big money makers) all said that down time is when they get their biggest ideas. It's when they're surfing or watching a movie or hiking or taking their yachts out for a spin i.e. definitely NOWHERE near a computer screen!

Even if you don't have your own yacht (yet ) taking down time each week to decompress, reflect on your week, think about what you'd like for your future can make the world of difference to your "business mind" as I like to call it
