    Why pick sides?

There's no such thing as "the best" model.

Different models suit different types of people and goals.

I've done well with both types.

I think it's just a little bit of fun. Ultimately we will do what works for us.

Neither. I'd develop an authority niche website.

The best bet in my opinion, is to get multiple authority sites in various niches. But micro niche sites are a good way to start, especially when you are still "learning the ropes" and finding out which niches are profitable.

I will suggest an authority site with contents which attract revisiting visitors. With the random and frequent google updates, you never know when your site will go down. It is better to be less dependent on google.

Start small. Make sure your goal is to make your micro niche an authority site over time.

I personally prefer the authority site model. I don't want to have to manage a bunch of sites in niches I have not interest in. I'd rather focus on a niche I like that's really profitable. I've made money in niches that I couldn't stand but couldn't stick with them. I also like the fact that over time, it becomes easier to outrank other sites. Also, if ever the time came that I wanted to sell it, I would get a lot more money for it.

@fin - Thanks for the mention here!

Both Steve and Mike are doing quite well with authority/niche sites and we thought it would be interesting to have them lay out their case for their models. Obviously, we're in the niche site camp, but I think some compelling points were made on both sides.

Someone in the comments said something pretty interesting I thought. He basically made the point that authority sites are more creative in nature and that mass production of niche sites is more system or process-based. You should pick based on the model you're more comfortable with...I thought that was pretty clever.
